Oregon Dunes OHV enthusiast are the Endangered Species

Like you, I am an avid OHV enthusiast. We are family, we love our chosen sport and we are environmentalist. The greenies could care less and are willing to put large sums of money to kill our recreation.

I want to get the word out through an educational effort that in the 1994 Forest Plan, the FS closed all but 36% of the ODNRA (Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area). Of that 36%; 15% is designated "routes only". To use their language, they Zoned the dunes. Attached is the Zoning and history. 10A is closed, 10B is open riding and 10C is Designated Routes only. The rest of the zoning is self explanatory. Part of this plan is to create "Work Groups" to review the 10C and come up with recommendations to where the trails are going to be within the 10C. I am part of that work group.

Please go on line to see this information:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/projects/rec-plans-projects/dunes-routes/index.shtml

They just made it official that 15% (10C) will be closed with the exception of a very few connector trails that the work group is deciding upon now. Please understand that the workgroup is only an advisory group and the Forest Service is obligated to look at all options before they make the final decision. In other words, they will do what they want. They are anticipating a law suit from the greenies challenging their decision one way or the other. The greenies have already sued to stop the trail for Riley Ranch access. We have advanced notice through this law suit that we must step up with our written efforts and our pocket books to fight back. They want it all closed and designated Wilderness. Ignorance is not Bliss! We must educate ourselves to understand that this is not the end. They are going to do a new Forest plan in 2014 so we must band together.
California and Washington OHV groups have done a fairly good job of working together but the Oregon effort is poor and spotty at best. When I got involved with this work group I was very ignorant. I am not ignorant anymore, I am SCARED. If we do not get involved we will as a group lose what we have left and we all will be STUPID because we did not get involved.

What we have left to ride on is about 25% of the 28,930 acres of the ODNRA, only about 7,200 acres will be open to riding. We just went through the process at the Middle Dunes (Winchester) which does not have much 10C but Banshee Hill is in the mix. The North Riding Area (Florence) is scary at best with most of the plantation stands off the table. By the map, half of the Florence dunes are in play. The Southern Riding area (Coos Bay) is being looked at in the next month. The public is invited to these meetings so go on the Forest Service web page above to get the dates and locations.

Some lessons learned are the economic impact and the safety of riders is very low on the priority list. VERY LOW. The Forest Service charter is to manage "Resources" first and foremost. That means vegetation, wetlands, and Critical Habitat for plants and animals. We are indeed an endangered species in the ODNRA. I thought that any economic impact would be huge. If you look at what the FS and BLM did with the spotted owl, then you can clearly see that economics will not come into play. That killed an industry and left the Pacific Northwest without jobs and money. The way they are going to regulate safety is to limit the amount of riders that can enjoy the dunes on any given weekend. They have already studied how many riders the 25% of dunes available can hold without hurting ourselves. Restrictions are a given.

Hopefully you can see why I am SCARED. We do have one very important opportunity that I feel we need to legally pursue. That is the simple, well documented fact that the dunes are being choked off and are indeed dying. The European Beach Grass planted in the early 1910 is slowly but surly killing the dunes. It is also killing Snowy Plover Habitat. We are the only cost effective documented way of killing the beach grass. I will try and post several research papers documenting this fact. A brief explanation is the dunes were created with sand flowing out of the Umpqua River. The wind and surf would push and blew the sand inland and accumulate to the dunes we see today. The beach grass is building the walls you see on the beach and the sand has stopped moving inland. As the grass stabilizes flowing sand that allows other bad plants like scotch broom to grow and eventually trees and forest that do not belong there. It has also killed grasses and plants that are native to the dunes. The FS and the BLM simply do not know what to do so they just keep doing what they always have and manage this "new" vegetation like it was always there. Flowing Sand is not Forest. The greenies are pushing this view as they want nobody in the dunes. The other point we must make is the fact that the bad vegetation is not just standing still but growing exponentially faster. The longer they wait the worse it gets.

A Call to action
What I am proposing to do as the next step is to work together to build a war chest to start legal action against the Forest Service. They need to continue to move ahead with a trail access for Riley Ranch. We also need to start legal action against the Forest Service to allow OHV access to more areas to kill beach grass. We must understand that they do have to
manage the ODNRA for other users so let them have the 60% that is now closed for other uses. Those dunes will eventually die anyway and if that is what they want then let it happen. Seems stupid to me but... I propose to work with the Blue Ribbon Coalition (http://www.sharetrails.org) and have them set up a place on their web page for us to go in and donate money. We need a commitment from ourselves to the BRC to fund any legal action moving forward. Please visit the BRC and let them know you are willing to donate.
We do not need a bunch of money to start the legal action. If the 300,000 or so OHV folks that visit the ODNRA donated a buck we would have plenty. I also encourage folks to join the BRC as they have successfully stopped the greenies across the US from closures. I am a Lifetime Member and very proud of it.

One other point I must bring up that is very unpopular among OHVers is the noise we make. The legal noise limit on the ODNRA is 93 db. I will not argue whether this is right or wrong, it is just a fact. I have finally found a chamber muffler for my Raptor 700 that gives me plenty of power and still stays within legal limits. I am in no way advocating this brand but there are very few manufactures that are willing to give us good power and keep the noise to a legal limit. Repacking is a waste of time especially with the 450. That manufacture is Leo Vince. Ron Gray at Bay Area Yamaha has them and they are not that expensive. Hopefully American Manufactures will start making these chamber type mufflers available. You have no idea how much grief we are taking with the Work Group and we are killing ourselves with this single issue. Please ride in the ODNRA within legal limits. If you cannot, please stay away. I want to ride in the dunes, not make a point that my whanger is bigger than yours.

Thanks so much,
Jody Phillips

Operation Ranger Provides First Response Organizations in Need with Polaris Ranger 6x6 Utility Vehicles

Since 2002, the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (USSTC) has partnered with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to offer first responders free all-terrain utility vehicles to assist with their departments' emergency response. Through Operation Ranger the USSTC has awarded over 460 of these vehicles to fire, rescue, EMS, emergency management, and wildlife law enforcement agencies across the United States, through an open, competitive application process.

According to Andy Lee, the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company's Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, the USSTC began this program after the tragedies of September 11, 2001, with a desire to recognize the services provided by first responders. Lee says, "We did a lot of research and found that there were very few companies that were actually donating equipment to first response organizations. There were several grant programs in place for monetary grants, but really no programs that we could find that were corporations actually donating equipment on a national level to first response organizations."

The National Volunteer Fire Council joined the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company in shaping the program and has aided in the vehicle distribution. According to Bob Kilpeck, the Vermont Director of the National Volunteer Fire Council and the Fire Chief for the Brandon Fire Department, "The Council is very, very pleased to work with USSTC and make these units available to the emergency services across this country. Everyone that I talk to is very, very pleased, and they have been a tremendous asset to the organizations that they've been given to and to their communities."

According to Kilpeck, when the program began John Deere was the initial manufacturer of the vehicles offered. However, since 2005, Polaris has partnered with the USSTC and NVFC, and the Polaris Ranger 6x6 is the vehicle that recipients have been awarded each year.

The Polaris Ranger 6x6 Utility features on-demand 6-wheel drive and independent center axle suspension, allowing it to handle the toughest terrains. With a top speed of 44 MPH, the Ranger boasts a liquid-cooled 40 HP engine, and Bosch multi-port electronic fuel injection. This vehicle seats three adults, and its sealed, water resistant fuel system allows it to operate in water 27 inches deep. It has a 1,250 lb. capacity composite cargo box, and 4,000 lb. capacity 4.0 Warn winch. The Polaris Ranger can tow up to 1,750 lbs.

Past winners, such as the Brandon Fire Department in Vermont, have used these versatile vehicles in many situations. The Brandon FD, a 2008 winner, protects an area which includes national forest lands, and has used their Ranger to assist with hiker emergencies on Vermont's Long Trail. According to Paramedic T.J. Lockwood of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, his department has been able to use their 2007 Polaris Ranger to transport personnel and victims in areas where brush rigs, fire trucks, and even pick-up trucks cannot travel. They have also used it in tandem with their helicopter to perform rescue operations.

To apply for one of the utility vehicles an emergency response department must complete an online application, and are encouraged to submit supporting .pdf documentation outlining their need for these vehicles, including letters of support from community leaders, photographs, and other relevant information. In selecting the winners, Andy Lee says that the Operation Ranger Committee takes several things into consideration. "We look for things like response area, service area in terms of square miles, populations serviced, and we want to make sure that the organization couldn't otherwise afford the vehicle. We also look at geography, and we also like to see that the organizations are willing to use the vehicle for mutual aid purposes."

The 2010 Operation Polaris Ranger application deadline is January 29, 2010. To access the online application, click here.

The 411 on the MSD Charge FI Controller for the Kawasaki Teryx

By Todd Eldridge, Hunterworks.com

Hunterworks has had the privilege to be a beta tester for the new MSD FI Charge for the 2009+ Kawasaki Teryx. We were one of several whose job was to work through the software, make suggestions on changes and look for bugs. I could just end this article right here and say, it is awesome and you have to have one if you have a 2009-2010 Teryx but I figure you want to know more about it.

First off this new box is a piggy back style unit which means you unplug the wiring harness from the stock ECU and plug it into the MSD then take the harness from the MSD and plug it in the stock ECU. Actually that is it for the install, takes three minutes tops. A piggy back style box takes the readings from the engines sensors and then manipulates them before they go into the ECU basically tricking the ECU to what the engine conditions are. This is the most common way of making a controller for any EFI vehicle of any type.

The MSD for the Teryx is not only a fuel controller but a ignition controller too. With one unit you can manipulate both ignition timing and adjust fuel to whatever engine mod you may have made. I would also like to state that 95% of people who buy one of these won't actually use the software or want to know how to use it, they simply want to plug it in and go. This is where buying it from a place that just sells it like it comes from MSD or pre-programs it to match several engine mods so you can just plug it up comes into play. I surely don't want to discourage anyone from getting one due to making it complicated because like I said most people won't ever use the software. Where this unit shines is in the hands of the tuner, it provides the tools to accomplish the goal. Let me use a analogy, most of us have no idea how a computer works but we use one everyday with ease, it is simply a tool. We depended on someone else to program the computer or write the software for the computer. That person had more tools at his disposal to be able to write the software or program the computer but you just use it. Just like computers there are going to be people who write their own programs for their use on their computer but they are few and far in between.

On to what makes this unit different from others, one the ignition and fuel controller is in one box, it will be the only one like this for a while and this makes it less expensive than units that have separate boxes. This unit also has what we call 3D fuel and ignition mapping. What this means is that instead of only being able to manipulate the fuel by engine RPM you will be able to adjust it by throttle position and engine RPM. The stock ECU has in a nutshell two fuel maps, one for wide open throttle (WOT) and one for part throttle, actually it is called Alpha-N and D-J method where one is based on throttle position and the other on engine load. Lets say you were running at a steady speed and the engine was running 6000 rpm, you would be on the part throttle curve which would be giving less fuel than WOT under heavy load. When under heavy load and WOT at the same engine RPM the ECU is giving more fuel. Most fuel controllers give a percentage of fuel and they don't know what the engine is doing and what curve is being used. Let's say that when cruising at a steady speed and 6000 rpm the engine needs 100 units of fuel and when you are under load and WOT open throttle at the same 6000 rpm you need 200 units of fuel. If you were needing to change the amount of fuel due to some engine mod and you needed to add 10% fuel at WOT throttle but part throttle cruising was ok then you would be stuck with 2D mapping because it RPM based only. Now with 3D mapping you can put in to give it the extra 10% fuel you need at WOT and leave part throttle alone. This is showing to be a huge advantage when installing performance cams in EFI engines, the two fuel maps are so far apart that you can't get a fuel map that works for part throttle and WOT. We ran into a issue with old 2D mapping where we had to either map for part throttle or WOT throttle, it was either too rich on one or the other and could not get a happy medium. I have heard of some tuners who were mapping a fuel map in a Rhino with performance cams and it ran great. The problem is without knowing it they tuned the part throttle curve only by easing through the RPM which kept the ECU on the part throttle curve and adjusting fuel along the way. What happens here is you have a good running engine but at WOT throttle it is too lean and it will run great until it quits due to engine damage, not good. With the new MSD for the Teryx that problem is gone and it is because of 3D mapping.

The MSD also has the ability to monitor lots of engine parameters in real time. With the unit attached to a computer via supplied USB cable you are able to monitor engine rpm, throttle position, engine temp, manifold air pressure, (MAP), advanced timing, injector duty cycle, etc. You are able to monitor these parameters via round gauges, you have a table with a list of gauges you can look at and you simply check the box next to the gauge you want to monitor. When you check a box in the list a gauge pops up, the more gauges you monitor the smaller the gauges get thus harder to read. I have several that are my favorite, the advanced timing is awesome, I have never been able to get real time timing without attaching a device to the output nut on the flywheel before with a homemade degree wheel and pointer. Obviously we use the throttle position (TPS) gauge when tuning for fuel and the duty cycle gauge lets you know when you are using up all the injector you when you have done engine mods. Once you exceed 80% duty cycle you need to look at getting a larger injector.

For actual tuning there are two tables that look much like a Excel document, one for timing and one for fuel. The timing table has manifold air pressure (MAP) down one side and engine rpm down the other, you adjust timing based on engine load thus the reason you use MAP. Higher the MAP the less load you have. On the fuel table you have TPS down one side and engine RPM down the other. This way you can adjust fuel at the same RPM but different throttle positions.

Because it looks like a Excel document I wanted to highlight a block, copy it and then highlight several blocks and then paste but it did not work that way, you can however copy and paste from one map to another. To change a whole section of values in the table you highlight them, hit the enter button and one of the blocks becomes editable then you simply click on the up and down arrows in the block or type a number in and hit enter again, then the whole section is the same value. Since this is not a lesson on how to use the software I won't go into the other ways to manipulate the table so the point is you can do about anything you might want to do to the fuel and spark making this the most advanced ignition/fuel controller that I have seen and because you can monitor all the engine information in real time which makes it easy to tune. The only other tool you would need is a air/fuel ratio gauge with a heated wide band O2 sensor. Since the vehicle does not have a O2 sensor the MSD can't monitor it.

A dyno would make tuning easy too so you don't wind up running up and down the road with a friend holding the laptop and reading the air/fuel ratio gauge even though you can do it this way. Much easier to sit it on a load control dyno and work thru the RPM range with various amounts of load, then after you get it dialed in there you can move to the road for final adjustment. If you have someone dyno tune this or any unit for you they MUST have a load control dyno or your wasting your time, money and the map may actually damage your engine by being too lean in the real world.

In summary as I said earlier, this is the most advanced unit with the ability to monitor the most engine information I have ever seen and it allows you to do basically whatever you might want to do to the fuel and timing maps. EFI is far easier to manipulate than carbs but for some it can be intimidating. I know when I first started I was like a hog looking at a wristwatch but now after a couple years and the right tools it is just easy. For the average guy most everything mentioned here won't ever be looked at or used. You have really three choices when purchasing one, buy one from a place that does not pre-program it for you and take it to a tuning center, tune it yourself or buy it from a place that pre-programs it for you and makes fuel and timing maps that match a particular engine mod then you just plug, play and haul butt!!!

Yamaha Announces All-New EF2400iSHC Generator

Yamaha EF2400iSHC Generator
Cypress, Calif. – Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., introduces a High Current version of the top selling EF2400iS – the new EF2400iSHC. Compact, lightweight and quiet while still powerful, reliable and with low emission, the Yamaha EF2400iSHC generator is perfect for camping, tailgating, powering workshop equipment or at home as back-up during a power outage.

From small power tools to appliances such as a refrigerator or microwave oven, the new Yamaha EF2400iSHC starts appliances quicker thanks to High Current technology and special Field Effect Transistors in the electronic controller. These features combine to increase the surge output, helping the new EF2400iSHC respond more quickly for greater big-appliance starting capacity and longer run time for all uses. A powerful 171cc engine and Yamaha’s industry leading Smart Throttle, which automatically adjusts the engine speed to match the load, allowing the EF2400iSHC to run at a slower engine speed resulting in quieter running and maximum fuel efficiency – up to 8.6 hours at 1/4-capacity load on one tank of fuel.

To ensure the EF2400iSHC retains its portability – small and lightweight (merely 75 pounds) – without sacrificing strength or reliability, a die cast aluminum frame and aluminum flywheel was used. Additionally, the EF2400iSHC has an actual noise level range of only 53~60 decibels (quieter than normal speech) – giving consumers a lightweight, quiet running and durable generator.

The EF2400iSHC will see most of its work done in a portable shop, at the track, RVing, tailgating, at the hunting cabin and during other recreation or leisure activities, but its real mettle is proven at-home during a power outage. The EF2400iSHC uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to produce high-quality electricity, which is as clean if not cleaner than the power supplied by public utility companies. PWM means consumers can use this generator with confidence as a power source for computers, variable speed power tools and appliances with built-in computer functions – perfect for charging cell phones and other sensitive electronics.

With a single side-mounted control panel that puts all controls on one surface and a detachable rear panel for easy access to service and maintenance points, the new EF2400iSHC is simple to use and easy to maintain. ASA AND UDG CELEBRATE A PRODUCTIVE AND SUCCESSFUL CLEANUP AT THE ISDRA

CANYON COUNTRY, CA — The 13th annual Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) Cleanup was held on January 16, 2010, during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Local media reported hundreds of volunteers posting at each of the several check-in locations that were situated throughout the ISDRA.

Originally, the event was organized by Jennifer Whyte and her "Project Sand" as a way to keep the dunes free of trash in the Glamis area. Concurrently, there was once a south dunes cleanup, which was conceived and organized by the Owners of KD Cycle and the previous owners of Duner's Diner. All of these organizers worked independently of each other, however, they all shared the common goal of eliminating trash and debris from the ISDRA.

The principle organization of the cleanup activities has since passed to the United Desert Gateway, a nonprofit organization started by the chambers of commerce in the gateway communities of Brawley, El Centro (CA), and Yuma (AZ) that surround the Imperial Sand Dunes.

“Once the UDG took over the event, the efforts of two separate cleanups (one in the Glamis area and another in the South Dunes) converged into one event encompassing the entire ISDRA.” said Gene Elwell, ASA Member and cleanup volunteer.

Once again, duners participated in keeping their favorite play area clean by removing trash and debris that was left in the dunes by irresponsible people. "This was a different kind of day in the dunes for our family. We enjoy these dunes, and today we made the effort to show it," stated Elwell.

In closing, the ASA would like to extend a note of gratitude to all people who participated in the cleanup and let them know that their efforts made a big difference in helping to maintain the quality of this popular off-roading area. The ASA would also like to remind fellow enthusiasts that the ASA web-site has a vast amount of information and resources related to the off-roading hobby. To access this information and learn more about the ISDRA, please visit www.asasand.com.

About The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area:

The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is located 25 miles west of Yuma Arizona in the California desert that consists of Sand Dunes stretching 40 miles into Mexico. This popular recreation area is ideally suited for Off Road recreation and is visited by 250,000 visitors a year.

About The American Sand Association:

The American Sand Association is a non-profit organization of approximately 34,000 members dedicated to preserving the use of public lands for sand sport enthusiasts’ use, improving OHV safety and promoting responsible land use. Some local sand sport areas include the Imperial Sand Dunes, Oceano Dunes (Pismo Beach) and Dumont Dunes in California, Sand Mountain in Nevada and Hotwell Dunes in Arizona. The ASA is a volunteer organization and it relies on the financial support of sand sport enthusiasts and small businesses. Most of the members are family oriented, have a rich family history going back for generations enjoying the sand sport; and most have a significant financial investment in their equipment, gear and campers. Additional information can be found on the ASA web-site at www.americansandassociation.org.

In the News:

"Hundreds clean up dunes" (Yuma Sun, 1/16/10)
"Hundreds of people turned out Saturday to prevent the Imperial Sand Dunes from becoming the Imperial 'Trash' Dunes during the 13th annual Sand Dunes Cleanup. Most of the men and women who were combing the desert sands on their quads had vacationed there during the holidays and returned to make sure the dunes are clean again for next year."

"Glamis dunes cleanup hauls in truckloads of trash" (IVNews.info, 1/17/10)
"Thirteen years ago, a group of people got fed up with the way Glamis was looking ... Glamis was becoming littered with plastic wrappers, utensils and even used diapers. Those who frequented the dunes wanted to do something about it before it was too late for Mother Nature’s good, and thus, the annual dunes cleanup day was born." Includes slide show of 11 photos from this year's cleanup.

Thousands take advantage of ASI's Interactive e-Learning Courses

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 20, 2010 - Last June, the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) unveiled a suite of free interactive online safety courses on its website (www.atvsafety.org). Since then, more than 5,000 all-terrain vehicle riders and prospective enthusiasts went online to participate in the beta training program. The online courses will move from beta to production at the end of Q1 2010.

The ASI ATV Safety Online courses are custom-designed for specific target audiences: adult, teen (12-15 years old) and youth (6-11 years old). The adult e-course also includes tips and advice for parents and guardians to coach and supervise youth throughout their ongoing learning process.

In the first six months of the beta program ending December 2009, enrollees in the e-courses included 3,672 adults, 1,009 teens and 445 children. ASI's goal in providing the interactive online courses is to complement traditional ASI training offerings with a convenient, 24/7 Internet option.

"We realize how critical the Internet is to the educational process, and what an essential communications tool it is for American families today," said Paul Vitrano, executive vice president, ASI. "We're very pleased with the strong response to the beta-launch of ASI's e-Learning courses. Day or night, weekdays or weekends, adults, teens and children can prepare in advance for the hands-on ATV RiderCourse or brush up on skills and safety information after taking the course. The combination of the ATV RiderCourse and online e-courses provides an expanded learning experience that enhances rider safety."

Each self-paced ATV Safety Online course runs about two hours and focuses on ASI's Golden Rules and the fundamentals of the ATV itself and riding, with an emphasis on risk management and avoidance. The online courses include real-riding-experience videos from a rider's point of view, animation, and interactive learning exercises and quizzes to self-test knowledge gained.

To engage teenagers and children 6 to 11 years of age, the ASI e-courses are introduced by avid ATV riders Christopher and Kyle Massey, stars of the Disney Channel TV shows "That's So Raven" and "Cory in the House" and the Nickelodeon show "Zoey 101." Their mother, Angel Massey, implores parents and guardians in the adult e-course to supervise their children while riding, as she does when riding with Christopher and Kyle.

The ASI online safety courses were designed in conjunction with CraneMorley (www.cranemorley.com) and the current beta versions have won three international awards in the creative industry.

The ATV Safety Institute's Golden Rules:

  1. Always wear a helmet and other protective gear.
  2. Never ride on public roads -- another vehicle could hit you.
  3. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
  4. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider vehicle.
  5. Ride an ATV that's right for your age.
  6. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.
  7. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
  8. Take an ATV RiderCourse; call toll-free at 800.887.2887, and take the free E-Course at www.atvsafety.org.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute&reg develops rider training programs and promotes the safe and responsible use of ATVs. The ASI works to reduce crashes and injuries resulting from improper ATV use. Formed in 1988, the ASI is a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America. For safety information or to enroll in the ATV RiderCourseSM nearest you, visit www.atvsafety.org or call (800) 887-2887.

RECREATION GROUPS SEEK TO ENTER ELDORADO FOREST SUIT

SACRAMENTO, CA (January 20) - The BlueRibbon Coalition is working with a coalition of recreational access groups seeking to enter the latest lawsuit challenging motorized recreation on federal lands in California.

The lawsuit was filed by the attorneys for the Western Environmental Law Center and the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) on behalf of the Center for Sierra Nevada Conservation, CBD and the Forest Issues Group. It was filed against the Eldorado National Forest's Motorized Travel Plan.

The preservationist plaintiffs contend the travel plan will adversely impact their recreational experience and that they will be irreparably harmed by the Record of Decision. The Recreation Groups filed a motion to intervene on January 12, 2010, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California (Case No. CV-09-2523-LKK). The groups seeking to intervene include the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, American Motorcyclist Association District 36, California Enduro Riders Association, and the BlueRibbon Coalition.

"Once again, the motorized recreation community must stand up to address a preservationist threat to our continuing recreational access," said Don Amador, Western Representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition. "This travel plan eliminated a significant amount of historical access, and we are far from thrilled by it, but have elected to focus our energy working with the Forest on forward-looking management solutions. We would welcome the plaintiffs in this case adopting a similar approach so we can end the decades-long litigation surrounding the Eldorado Forest," Amador concludes.

The Motion to Intervene is presently scheduled to be heard on February 22, 2010, in Sacramento.

Yamaha Releases Statement on Recent Dismissals of Rhino Lawsuits

Safety drives everything we do at Yamaha. We are proud of the safety record and safety features of the Yamaha Rhino, which has skyrocketed in popularity due to its exceptional reliability, safety and versatility. Over 150,000 Rhino owners have used our vehicles safely, including the U.S. military, border patrol, and a growing number of law enforcement agencies, fire fighters and other first responders. The Rhino has won virtually every “first in class” award and top safety ratings in independent reviews since its introduction.

The popularity of the Rhino, and the fact that it represents a new category of off-road motorized vehicles, has made it a target for some plaintiffs’ lawyers who increasingly use the Internet, television advertisements and the news media to attract clients. Nevertheless, more than 50 Rhino-related lawsuits against Yamaha have been dismissed either by the courts or by the plaintiffs. Most recently, The Estate of Ellen Sand versus Yamaha Motor Corporation, LTD in Warren County, Ohio was dismissed [withdrawn] by the plaintiff’s own lawyers only days before the case was scheduled to go to trial, and in Georgia, the court granted Yamaha’s motion for summary judgment and dismissed the case in Robert Lamar Smith III versus Yamaha Motor Corporation, LTD in XX, Alabama.

Yamaha stands firmly behind the Rhino and will continue to vigorously defend the product. The Rhino is a safe and useful off-road vehicle when driven responsibly and according to the instructions and warnings in our on-product labels, owner’s manuals, and other safety materials.

Yamaha is saddened whenever anyone is injured in a Yamaha product-related accident, and we urge all our customers to follow the safety recommendations on our products and, as importantly, to always operate the products in a safe and responsible manner. Rhinos are designed for off-road use only, and the vehicle is only recommended for adult drivers aged 16 or older with a valid driver’s license. Passengers must be large enough to keep their backs against the seat backs with both feet firmly on the floorboard. Drivers and passengers should wear helmets and the vehicle’s three-point seat belts at all times.

Minneapolis, January 12, 2010– Coming off their third Best in the Desert Championship for the 2009 season, Jagged X started 2010 with a bang taking the checkered flag at “Epic Racing Products Parker 250.”

The starting line was crowded with 17 Side-by-Sides lined up with the Jagged X No. 1919 RANGER RZR starting in fifth position. Fighting the early morning sun and thick dust Brandon Schueler was able to work his way to the front of the pack and hold off the huge field to cross the finish line first, more than four minutes ahead of the next racer. RANGER RZRs dominated the field finishing first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

“This race marked the 21st consecutive finish for Jagged X and Polaris proving once again that RANGER RZR is the hardest working, smoothest riding and hardest racing Side-by-Sides in the world,” said Bill Schueler of Jagged X. “We want to thank all the people and sponsors that help us to make our racing program what it is.”

Jagged X is sponsored by Polaris Industries, Mountain States Contracting, Elka Suspension, CR Designs, S&S Off Road, Simpson Products, ATL Fuel Systems, Tire Balls, MTA, Vision X Off Road, OMF Performance, Affordable Powder Coat, Robby Gordon Off Road, Trophy Engineering, Fullbore Innovations.

New RevArc HD Loading Ramps are Designed for UTVs

RevArc UTV Loading Ramp
The latest edition to the RevArc line of ramps is the new RevArc HD (Heavy Duty) designed to load large Side by Sides into a truck or trailer. With a 2100 lb capacity, 64” wide, and 90” long, this ramp can work with Yamaha Rhinos, Polaris Rangers, John Deere Gators, and Argos.

Consumers benefit with a safer load angle compared to a conventional ramp due to the longer length feature, plus the advanced arched design offers a superior smooth transition from bed to ground. At 48 lbs, the lightweight design can easily be positioned and handled by anyone, and it slips under an UTV for easy storage. RevArc HD is an innovative hybrid ramp. It features the performance of an arched ramp with the stability and safety of a tri-fold ramp. Because it is simple to use, consumers rarely have to second guess whether the ramp is lined up with the UTV. Just position the ramp, lock the single strap, and load with confidence. Ramp twisting, sliding, or slipping is greatly reduced with a RevArc HD. Many companies talk about safety, but Bosski actually did something about it with RevArc ramps.

Finally, Bosski gives UTV owners extra piece of mind with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Should the ramp ever malfunction from defects in workmanship or materials, Bosski will repair or replace it.

The RevArc HD retails for $299.

New Polaris RZR Cargo Rack from All Terrain Research

ATR’s new Polaris RZR Cargo Rack height adjustable, quickly removable, and tilts up to access your spare or additional gear underneath. The Cargo Rack is adjustable from 9" to 11.5" in height between the RZR's bed and the bottom of the rack.

Cargo Rack uses ATR’s tube clamps to mount to the spreader bar behind the seats. The factory "lock and ride" mounting holes are convenient for some things, but not strong enough to bear the weight of items such as a loaded full size cooler or camping gear. A big advantage to this design is you do not have mounting feet going down taking up more room below the rack. ATR’s cargo rack allows you to effectively double the footprint of your bed storage area, and the tube clamp mounting is strong enough to hold just about anything you want to throw on it.

Once the tube clamp mounts are installed, the Cargo Rack can be quickly removed by pulling the 4 stainless ball pins. Also included is straps that secure quick release ball pins so they are not lost. ATR Cargo Rack comes in a durable black powder coat.
