As part of its ongoing effort to engage the public on issues in more timely and relevant ways, the Bureau of Land Management has entered the realm of social media by establishing a presence on the popular websites Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
“We are excited about using social media to connect with people interested in the management of their public lands,” said BLM Director Bob Abbey. “Through such media, the BLM will not only be able to reach more citizens in ‘real time,’ but also generate instant feedback on the myriad issues facing our agency.”
Besides the social media accounts set up by the Bureau’s national office in Washington, D.C., more local and subject-specific accounts will be administered by the BLM’s State Offices and various programs throughout the agency. For example, BLM-California, BLM-Colorado, BLM-New Mexico, BLM-Oregon, and BLM-Wyoming have already created Facebook pages, as has the Bureau’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.
Interested parties can begin following the BLM at http://www.facebook.com/BLMNational and http://www.twitter.com/BLMNational . A list of our other social media sites can be found at http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/info/socialmedia.html .
Twitter is a free micro-blogging and social networking service that allows users to send and receive each other’s updates through interactions known as “tweets,” while Facebook allows users to share items of interest with their friends via text, photos, and videos.
The BLM has also established a YouTube channel to share informational videos more easily with the public. The Bureau’s YouTube page is accessible at http://www.youtube.com/BLMNational .
The BLM manages more land – more than 245 million acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.

Freeland Fire Department acquires Polaris RANGER 6x6

Freeland Volunteer Fire Co., now owns a piece of equipment that's one- of-a-kind in the Hazleton area.
A grant to obtain the new emergency tool is also a rarity - Freeland was one of 20 companies in the nation to receive the funding.
It's a 2010 Polaris Ranger 6X6 utility off-road vehicle, obtained through Operation Ranger, a grant made possible by Altria smokeless tobacco and Gifts of Kind International, Wilson Malloy, assistant fire chief, said.
The piece is being called utility No. 56 by the company, which also happens to be Freeland's station number.
Malloy located a grant for the $15,000 piece of equipment and applied for it online by writing a 500-word essay on why the Polaris is needed in Freeland.
Malloy said with the increase in all terrain vehicle accidents and searches for lost riders in the area, coupled with the rural spaces that surround Freeland, the need for the equipment was easy to explain.
Malloy said ATV riders, predominantly people from out of town that are unfamiliar with the area, are getting stranded in the woods and nearby coal stripping pits more often in recent years.
"They're getting stranded in areas where you just can't get a vehicle," he said.
Fire Chief Joseph Stepansky said the department had three rescue calls for ATV riders in the past three months.
Malloy said the Polaris will also help out communities as part of the Luzerne County mutual aid assistance.
Wednesday, the company officially welcomed the piece to its station, parking the vehicle outside the station. Malloy walked over to it and turned the utility vehicle's ignition on as its engine gurgled just like an ATV would.
Though the Polaris may appear to look like a large ATV, the automatic transmission vehicle with tilt steering and electric starter has more features.
The Polaris has a box on the back that can either act as a dump or a safe place to transport a rescued patient from the woods.
Stepansky said most ATV's can only carry one person - the driver - and most don't have seatbelts. The Polaris, Stepansky said, can carry two people in it with seatbelts.
It has additional storage capacity and comes with a winch that's able to pull up to 4,000-pounds. The vehicle can also switch from six-wheel to two-wheel drive and will be an asset during major snow emergencies as it's easy to negotiate on snow-covered roads.
"It's a good addition to our fleet," Malloy said.
And according to some of his fellow volunteers, Malloy is an asset to the department.
Calvin Herring, of the department said, in the past 10 years Malloy was able to obtain $435,000 in grants for the company.

DragonFire's Sneak Peak at Customizing the Can-Am Commander
The long-anticipated Can-Am Commander hasn’t even been released to dealerships yet and already DragonFire Racing is developing dozens of new products and accessories for this innovative UTV that has the entire industry craning its collective neck for a peek.

In fact, we’re one of the few companies to get one of these sensational side-by-sides, and we’ve been hard at work coming up with new products for this vehicle for a while now. This gives us ample time to test and design all of the new Can-Am Commander products before the public gets their hands on it. And we have to admit — we’re having a blast!
The 2011 Can-Am Commander lineup, with five models and two engine options, follows through on its promise to bring cutting-edge design, innovation and a focus on convenience, value and usability. This thing is 39 percent more fuel efficient than its class competitor, has more cockpit storage than any other side-by-side, and boasts one of the most powerful engines in the UTV industry.
But somebody’s got to add all the fancy aftermarket equipment, accessories and bells and whistles, and that somebody might as well be us — DragonFire Racing. We have existing DFR products that can be installed on the new Can-Am, as well as a garage full of new products for Can-Am that are immediately available. And by immediately available, we mean you can get them right now.

Our 14-inch Baja Crippler wheels — the strongest beadlock wheel available — feature a reinforced inner ring, an area that has proven to be the highest failure in racing wheels. You can see the 14-inch Baja Crippler wheels here.

In addition, our existing DragonFire racing restraints are ready for installation on the new Can-Ams, featuring safety and comfort and our unique H-style that lets you run the belts around the headrest while staying on your shoulders. To see this product, visit this link.
Other products that we’ve developed in the past month that are specially made for the Can-Am Commander lineup include:
In September, we’ve got another dozen new products for the Can-Am. These DFR products include:

RANGER EV Named “Best of the Best” by “Field & Stream” Magazine
Minneapolis, Aug. 26, 2010– Polaris Industries today announced the RANGER EV has been awarded “Best of the Best” by “Field & Stream” Magazine. Polaris also won the “Best of the Best” last year with the RANGER HD 800 featuring the PURE Polaris Lift & Carry system.
“Polaris would like to thank ‘Field & Stream’ for continuing to notice Polaris’ contribution to the hunting industry,’” said Jan Rintamaki, marketing director of the Off-Road Division for Polaris. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the world’s leading outdoor magazine two years in a row.”
The RANGER EV electric Side-by-Side was a first for Polaris. The unit features the largest battery pack in the industry (11.5 kilowatts) and has the longest range of any electric Midsize. Built for clean and quiet operation, and full of hardest working, smoothest riding features, the RANGER EV is perfect for hunters and homeowners with acreage. For more sensitive terrains and a better turning radius, RANGER EV has VersaTrac with one-wheel, rear-wheel drive to prevent damage and also better navigate tight areas often encountered in the woods. LSR SR1 race team knocked down, but not out
The LSR SR1 race team was back at it and was very excited to be racing at Glen Helen. With all of the history that has gone on at that world renowned facility, the team knew they were part of some new history with the return of Short Course Racing to Glen Helen and Southern California. Knowing the stands were going to be jammed packed with eager fans, LSR was looking forward to putting on a great show with some highly competitive racing. The track was sold out and even a large amount of fans were turned away as Saturday evening progressed.
Friday’s rounds of practice went well, but while waiting an extra hour in staging for practice number 2 with no water, Greg was feeling a bit dehydrated. This had a deteriorating effect on him and caused him to be a little off his game for qualifying even though he still managed to qualify mid pack.
The team started out Saturday with making some shock changes to handle the track better and to help keep the car under control through the rough terrain. After getting the shocks back on the car, they found out there was a last chance 2 lap practice. So they scrambled to get back out on the track to make sure the changes were correct. In 2 laps, Greg was able to shave over a full second off his practice and qualifying times. LSR were very confident going into the main as they were putting down times to run at the front of the pack. On to the main event! Unfortunately, with a super wet track (it had mostly been dry up to this point) Greg was blinded by muddy roost, hit a slick spot in turn one and slammed into the concrete k-rails just after turn one, ending the day. The car suffered a significant amount of damage both front and rear, as the car slid into the wall making contact with the front and rear tires simultaneously. Being prepared from the flip last race, they had almost all the spare parts needed besides a front spindle. Weller Racing to the rescue again and had an extra to lend to the LSR SR1.
Sunday was redemption time. After watching 15 laps of chaos on Saturday, LSR knew it was more about surviving, than being the 1st car out front. So starting at the back of the pack, at the drop of the green flag, Greg was a little more cautious through turn one, and while he was able to pass 3 cars by the “un-rhythm” section after turn 2, he had his sights on the next car and he was gaining ground as the cars danced down the jumps into turn 3. Greg was on the inside with another car far to the outside and suddenly that car cut into Greg’s line, making contact and ripping off the front wheel causing Greg to pull off to the side. It was a moment that radios were removed from the crew’s ears, so they didn’t have to listen to the extreme frustration Greg was releasing from his mouth. After watching the in car videos after, it was clear that Greg was the victim of an unfortunate mishap. But that is what racing is all about. Riding out the lows and constantly fighting for those highs! It was a frustrating way to end the weekend, but the LSR team will be back strong for rounds 11 and 12.
So to conclude the weekend, 2 DNF’s are for sure not going to help LSR in the championship points race, but there are still 6 more rounds of racing left this season. So LSR will be continuing to fight for top position, which should make for some interesting racing!
The next race is at Speedworld in Surprise, AZ the weekend of September 25th. Make sure to come out and see all the action!
Also, for all you Southern California and sand dune fanatics, LSR will have their race car on display at the Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa the weekend of September 18th, in Lone Star Racing’s booth.

Celebrities Speak Out on Behalf of FAST-Aid, Companies Donate Large Sums, Fundraisers Being Planned for California 200 Accident
MESA, AZ – AUGUST 24, 2010: Jesse James as seen on Access Hollywood, BJ Baldwin, Andy McMillin, Roger Norman, Chaplain Steve Hanson and a dozen other celebrities, racers and off road industry leaders have spoken in public support for FAST-Aid.org continuing the effort of generous response for the families of the casualties and the injured at the MDR California 200 off road race accident that happened August 14th. "So many people have contributed in so many ways. I am appreciative of Jesse James being willing to make positive use of the spotlight that has been cast on him. He single-handedly was able to put our cause on national television and show America what an incredible group of people the off-road family can be," said Jared Tetzlaff, President of FAST-Aid. (All Public Service Announcement speakers are listed below with the link to the appropriate Video)
To date, the California 200 fund has exceeded $120,000 with a response from over 800 generous donors. Multiple large donations have been received from Mango Racing, 4 Wheel Parts, Green Army Racing, Fox Racing Shox, BC Racing, Cameron Steele Desert Assassins/Yokohama TT #16, Race-Dezert.com, JSI Motorsports, Parkhouse Tires, The Factory Racing, Reid Products, and Canidae Racing Team.
The FAST-Aid team feels they are still over $50,000 away from their goal to properly assist the families, injured and those in need of emotional support if they were at the scene of the accident. The donation page is still active at www.fast-aid.org, and there are multiple fundraising events being created all over the US. Every Dezert People 8 premier will be a fundraising point and you can meet the FAST-Aid group at the SCORE Primm 300 race.
“Our family did not have extra money to pay for funeral costs. We don’t even know what we would do if it wasn’t for your help,” wrote a family member of the deceased in a note to FAST-Aid. The FAST-Aid board of directors has been working hard to contact the families of those hurt or deceased in the California 200 accident and let them know about the assistance available to them as a result of the incredible outpouring of support from the off-road family. Many families have been contacted and financial assistance has already begun to be sent out.
President Jared Tetzlaff states, “The entire board of directors has had a heavy heart this week in talking with those affected by the California 200 accident. We have been available to listen to families work through their grief as well as provide answers to how they will be able to honor the lives of their loved ones. The only benefit this all-volunteer board receives is seeing the families being less burdened during this difficult time when we’re able to be there to listen and provide financial assistance to them. All of the Fast-Aid volunteers have worked tirelessly this last week to ensure that the off-road family is taken care of and as sad as this tragedy is, we are all honored to do so. FAST-Aid is so proud of the off-road community and it’s response. Many people have given money, many people have given their time, and many people have given their name or expertise to help further this cause and it all makes a difference in the lives we are trying to impact.”
FAST-Aid, similar in nature to the Red Cross, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial, educational and personal assistance to injured racers, support teams and their families as well as ensures the necessary support is in place to complete a thorough recovery and rehabilitation from motor sports racing incidents.
To donate specifically to help the California 200 casualties, please go to http://www.fast-aid.org and note “California 200” on your donation and 100% of the funds received will be applied to assisting their families in this difficult time. Donations are tax-deductible. We are paying expenses directly to the people they owe money to. If they have already put expenses on a credit card, they will provide receipts for reimbursement or we will pay the credit card directly. This is the policy for all racers we help.

Entire OffRoad Community Rallies to Help Families In Need
FAST-Aid Relief Fund for MDR California 200 Accident
MESA, AZ – AUGUST 18, 2010: FAST-Aid is excited with the generous response for the families of the casualties and the injured at the MDR California 200 off road race accident that happened last weekend. The entire Off Road Community has rallied together to raise over $107,000 within the week, but that is still $75,000+ away from reaching their estimated need to properly assist the families, injured and those in need of emotional support if they were at the scene of the accident.
“We are humbled by the donations including large sums of $50,000 from Mango Racing and $10,000 from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers, and appreciate everything all the way down to the $5 donations. Off Road clubs and companies are rallying together to form fundraising events across the country. The off road community is tight knit, and they are certainly rallying and showing their positive support,” stated Jared Tetzlaff, President of FAST-Aid.
The funds are being allocated to the grieving families in this particular order. “Our priority is helping with immediate funeral expenses, and we are offering the services of Racers for Christ Off-Road Chaplain Steve Hanson to officiate the services if they do not have a family clergy-member to perform the funerals,” stated Tetzlaff. Second, will be to assist with Medical expenses/bills that need to be paid as a result of lost work due to injuries suffered in the crash. Third level of assistance will be for the Children of the deceased. Additionally, we will be setting up Education/Trust funds for the children, which will be available at 18 years old for education or 25 years old if they choose not to use it for education. It is also important to FAST-Aid to be able to assist all those directly involved in the accident by helping arrange for counseling/mental well-being to prevent possible PTSD and other long-term psychological effects of this tragic accident.

Yamaha Announces 2010 Second Quarter OHV Access Initiative GRANTs
$50,000 GRANTed to Five Recipients in Q2; Nearly $1.5 Million to Date
Promoting Safe, Responsible OHV Riding and Sustainable, Open Access for Motorized Recreation
CYPRESS, Calif. – August 23, 2010 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., awarded more than $50,000 in GRANTs (Guaranteeing Responsible Access to our Nation’s Trails) to ATV riding clubs and public land management agencies across the country in the OHV Access Initiative’s mid-year funding cycle for 2010.
“Two years into the program, we continue to see the OHV community respond and apply for resources with well-designed projects that support the safety and sustainability of motorized recreation nationwide,” said Mike Martinez, general manager of Yamaha’s ATV and Side-by-Side Operations.
Since the introduction of the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative in 2008, 129 organizations have received GRANT funding for projects that directly support responsible OHV riding and open access for motorized recreation.
“As we evaluate the effectiveness of the OHV Access Initiative, it is clear that a significant portion of our GRANTs benefit areas that might otherwise be lost to OHV riding,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS marketing manager. “Our GRANTs are supporting local, state and federal public lands in 30 states, and we know there are still many critical areas that need funding. If your riding area needs help, we strongly encourage you to consider submitting an application.”
Yamaha GRANTs were awarded to five qualified recipients from applications received during the program’s second quarter funding cycle.
Awardees include:
· Arkansas Trail Blazers ATV Club
· U.S. Bureau of Land Management – Pocatello, Idaho
· Mountain Trail Riders Association – Jonesborough, Tenn.
· Red Rock Rider's ATV Club - Pengilly, Minn.
· Washington State Department of Natural Resources – Capitol State Forest
About the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative
Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from non-profit or tax-exempt organizations including OHV riding clubs, national forests and associations, and national, state and local government agencies. A committee then reviews each application and awards GRANTs to deserving projects. Applications for the third quarter of 2010 must be postmarked by September 30, 2010.
Examples of appropriate projects for GRANTs include, but are not limited to:
· Trail development, restoration and maintenance
· Trail signage and map production
· Staging area construction, renovation and maintenance
· Land stewardship, trail safety and education

Jury in Alabama Rejects Plaintiff’s Claims Regarding Yamaha Rhino
CYPRESS, CA– August 12, 2010 – A jury in Tallapoosa County, Alabama today rejected the plaintiff's claims and returned a unanimous defense verdict for Yamaha in Mathis vs Yamaha, a case involving an accident on a Yamaha Rhino in Alexander City, Alabama. This verdict in favor of Yamaha is the second in 24 hours and marks the fourth time a jury has rejected plaintiff's claims regarding the Rhino’s design, finding no defect in the Rhino.
Yamaha is saddened whenever anyone is injured in an accident involving a Yamaha product, and the accident in this case underscores the importance of following the safety guidelines posted on the Rhino and in the owner's manual, and to always operate the products in a safe and responsible manner. New plan could add 40,000 acres for off-highway riding at Glamis
One of the country’s most popular off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding areas could soon see nearly 40,000 acres returned to the OHV ledger, thanks to a new plan developed by the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
"This is great news," said Nick Haris, AMA western states representative. "The groups that want to restrict off-highway riding have gone to court in the past claiming that the Peirson's milk-vetch growing at Glamis is endangered and needs protection, but the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California recently ruled that the plant is being protected appropriately.”
In April, the BLM released a draft Recreation Area Management Plan (RAMP) for the 200,000-acre Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, popularly known as Glamis because of its proximity to that town in the far southeast corner of California.
The Imperial Sand Dunes area ranks as one of the most important public recreation areas nationwide, attracting more than 1.2 million visitors each year. OHV riders, through their purchases of food, fuel and lodging, contribute significantly to the local economy.
The public comment period for the RAMP ended June 23. Federal officials are now reviewing the comments, and the "Preferred Alternative"—that is, the plan that the BLM intends to follow that adds about 40,000 more acres for off-highway riding—is likely to be adopted unless the public-comment process points out a legitimate flaw in the BLM’s planning.
Under the Preferred Alternative of the new RAMP, 179,622 acres would be open to OHVs.
"A lot of credit goes to the BLM for its work to create a good recreational plan for the area, and to the various local groups who have fought the anti-access forces over the years," Haris said.
Those groups include the AMA’s District 37 (Southern California), the Off-Road Business Association, the American Sand Association, the San Diego Off-Road Coalition and others that have fought back in court and organized users to submit comments to the BLM in favor of keeping the dunes open to OHVs.
Regulations and legal challenges have shut down major portions of the dunes that were specifically set aside for motorized recreation, including about 49,000 acres in recent years, leaving just 140,740 acres available for OHV riding.
The RAMP Preferred Alternative designates 11,670 acres as critical habitat closed to OHV recreation to protect the Peirson's milk-vetch, which is a silvery, short-lived plant that can grow to 2.5 feet tall and produces small purple flowers, generally in March or April.
The federal court ruled the BLM critical habitat designation is large enough to adequately protect the plant.
“Under the terms of the California Desert Conservation Area Plan, which has been in effect for decades, open motorized recreation was restricted to less than 2 percent of the California desert,” Haris said. “And since then, opponents of motorized recreation have continued to whittle away at the riding areas that remained, forcing more OHV users onto smaller areas of land.
“This action by the BLM restores some of this vitally important recreational land, preserving responsible riding opportunities for the growing Southern California population,” he said.
It's unknown when the new BLM plan will go into effect.

Kawasaki Teryx Rolls On With Two More Wins From Kimbrell and George
Irvine, Calif. – Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Austin Kimbrell and Monster Energy/ Funco/ Kawasaki’s Chad George both took wins aboard their Kawasaki Teryx machines at the inaugural LOORRS event at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif. Tyler Winbury and Robert VanBeekum gave Kawasaki the podium sweep for both rounds of the weekend. |
Five In A Row Although Kimbrell didn’t break his personal record of wins-in-a-row, he tied his best of five wins after capturing a come-from-behind victory during Round 9 of the series. The next day, Kimbrell nursed his vehicle to the checkered in third position after a small part broke on the opening laps. “This weekend we ran 15 laps, which is almost double the laps we usually put in,” said Kimbrell. “It ended up being an advantage for me on Saturday since I spun out on the first lap and had to work my way through to get up to first. It could have been a lot worse, but we got the valuable points. In the second race, it was just one of those things you couldn’t have predicted to happen with the vacuum tube breaking and I had to do what I could to make it through the 15 laps.” |
Back On Top After a five round stint without seeing the top of the podium, George put it all together for a great showing during the 10th round on Sunday for his second win of the season. “This win was long overdue,” said George. “We came into the weekend feeling like we had a shot for the win and we were able to come away with our second win of the year. I had a great battle with Bobby (VanBeekum) and eventually got around him just before the halfway caution. After that I was able to stay calm and take the win.” |
Podium Sweeps The Kawasaki Teryx has been proving its place in UTV racing all season and with six podium sweeps in 10 races, the Teryx has become the machine to beat. “Whether it is Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx teams or other Kawasaki racer teams the Teryx has become the brand of choice in the LOORS events,” said Reid Nordin, Team Green Manager. “The V twin power and drive train have proven time and time again that it can take what these difficult tracks and talented drivers can throw at it.” |
Six More Rounds With six more rounds remaining in the series, the drivers still have plenty of time to move around in the standings. Currently Kimbrell sits four points ahead of George in the championship. “There is still a lot of racing left in the series,” said George. “It’s been a tight battle between Austin (Kimbrell) and our team. I am just trying to focus on not making big mistakes that can cost us a lot of points.” |

Arctic Cat Reports Fiscal 2011 First Quarter Results
MINNEAPOLIS, Jul 29, 2010 -- Arctic Cat Inc. today reported that its net loss narrowed to $4.5 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, on net sales of $63.4 million for the fiscal 2011 first quarter ended June 30, 2010. In the prior-year first quarter of fiscal 2010, Arctic Cat reported a net loss of $5.9 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, on net sales of $69.4 million. The company historically reports a net loss in its fiscal first quarter, due to the seasonal nature of its products, with the majority of its sales and earnings occurring in its fiscal second and third quarters.
Commenting on the first quarter results, Arctic Cat's chairman and chief executive officer Christopher A. Twomey said: "We are pleased with the company's improved results. Overall, we have made remarkable strides given that the powersports sector has yet to recover from the economic recession. During the quarter, we achieved higher gross margins on lower sales volumes and further strengthened our balance sheet. We made additional progress on our strategy to closely match wholesale and retail sales, in order to reduce dealer inventories and align them with current consumer demand in our markets. We gained ATV market share by offering innovative world-class products. We also continued to aggressively work on lowering our cost structure."
Among the highlights of Arctic Cat's 2011 first quarter financial results versus the same quarter last year:
All-terrain vehicle (ATV) sales totaled $27.8 million in the first quarter versus $32.2 million in the same period last year. Arctic Cat continued to match wholesale sales with actual retail demand in order to further reduce dealer inventories. At the same time, the company pursued its strategy to introduce new models and features in the ATV segments with the greatest consumer demand.
In the first quarter, Arctic Cat introduced two side-by-side Prowler utility vehicles for the 2011 model year: the Prowler HDX and the Prowler 550 XT. The three-passenger Prowler HDX is designed to be a heavy-duty utility workhorse. Its versatile rear cargo box hauls up to 1,000 lbs. and offers removable sides to create a convenient flatbed. In addition, power steering and an extra long wheelbase give it a smooth, comfortable ride. For the newly introduced Prowler 550 XT, Arctic Cat offers a sporty new look. Arctic Cat also extended its critically acclaimed electric power steering package, among other feature enhancements, to additional ATV models, including Arctic Cat's two-rider TRVs.
Snowmobile sales totaled $17.1 million in the first quarter compared to $17.9 million in the prior-year quarter. During the quarter, Arctic Cat announced that it entered into an agreement to transition its snowmobile engine manufacturing from Suzuki Motor Corporation. Arctic Cat will begin manufacturing some of its own snowmobile engines at its engine manufacturing facility in St. Cloud, Minn., after the 2014 model year. Currently, Suzuki supplies all engines for Arctic Cat's snowmobiles.
In making the announcement, Twomey noted: "Suzuki has been an outstanding engine supply partner for more than 25 years and remains a significant shareholder in Arctic Cat. However, we are changing our engine strategy in order to gain more control over our products, and enhance our ability to meet regulatory and performance requirements. This also will enable us to better utilize our current engine manufacturing capacity, which should result in lower costs."
Sales of parts, garments and accessories (PG&A) in the first quarter were $18.5 million versus $19.3 million in the prior-year quarter. To help fuel PG&A sales in fiscal 2011, Arctic Cat is continuing to expand its new accessories and garment offerings to generate additional revenue and earnings.
Outlook
"Through a rescaled business and strong expense controls, we are on track to deliver improved operating results and increased profitability again this fiscal year," Twomey said.
Arctic Cat is focused on leveraging its operational efficiency and improving its profitability in a continued low-demand recreational vehicle market. The company's fiscal 2011 outlook includes the following assumptions: ATV industry retail sales declining approximately 10 to 12 percent; snowmobile industry retail sales in a range of up or down approximately 5 percent; Arctic Cat dealer inventories declining 20 to 30 percent; increasing gross margins between 100 to 200 basis points; achieving flat operating expense levels as a percent of sales; increasing cash flow from operations; and ending the year with more cash on the balance sheet.
Arctic Cat continues to estimate sales for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, in the range of $447 million to $460 million. The company anticipates that fiscal 2011 earnings will be in the range of $0.18 to $0.33 per diluted share.
Commented Twomey: "Arctic Cat remains positioned for long-term growth when the retail powersports market recovers."

- North American dealer inventories declined 23 percent;
- Gained ATV market share;
- Gross margins improved 610 basis points;
- Factory inventory declined 31 percent to $88.1 million from $127.1 million;
- Total cash and short-term investments at quarter end rose to $58.6 million from $7.9 million; and
- The company has no short or long-term debt.
