2010 Mike Holmes Foundation ATV Ride

On September 25th the Can-Am Off-Road team gathered at the Canadian Forces Base in Borden, Ontario for the ATV Ride in Support of The Holmes Foundation presented by the OFATV and sponsored by Can-Am.

Thanks to a remote military base, the land was perfect for the day’s ATV riding! All attendees brought their ATVs and found countless miles of awesome trails. The ride took over five hours and that was just the trails on the Canadian Forces Base!

The riding terrain was diverse. Riders saw sand, rock, mud and the base even let all participants ride the trails used for testing tanks.

But for most, the best part of the charity ride was meeting HGTV personality, Mike Holmes. Mike signed hundreds of autographs and took just as many photos with fans.

Following the ride, the OFATV volunteers put on a fabulous BBQ. Many thanks for all of their efforts and great food!

Take a look below at a video of the Mike Holmes Charity ride below!

Arctic Cat Reports Fiscal 2011 Second Quarter Results

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct 28, 2010  --Second quarter operating profit rose 25%;

--Company raises annual revenue and earnings guidance

Arctic Cat Inc. today reported net earnings of $17.8 million, or $0.97 per diluted share, on net sales of $175.8 million for the fiscal 2011 second quarter ended September 30, 2010. Arctic Cat reported net earnings in the prior-year second quarter of $14.8 million, or $0.81 per diluted share, on net sales of $166.3 million.

For the six months ended September 30, 2010, Arctic Cat's net earnings were $13.3 million, or $0.72 per diluted share, on net sales of $239.2 million. In the first six months of last fiscal year, the company reported net earnings of $8.8 million, or $0.48 per diluted share, on net sales of $235.7 million.

Commented Arctic Cat's chairman and chief executive officer Christopher A. Twomey: "We are very pleased to report double-digit earnings gains on increased snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle sales in the second quarter. We made further progress on our goal to improve the company's profitability and strengthen the balance sheet."

Among the highlights of Arctic Cat's 2011 second quarter financial results versus the same quarter last year:

Gross margins improved 200 basis points in the quarter and 350 basis points year to date; Operating profit rose 25 percent to $27.4 million from $21.9 million; Factory inventory declined 28 percent to $95.9 million from $133.6 million; Total cash and short-term investments at quarter end rose to $80.9 million from $11.2 million; and The company has no short- or long-term debt.

"Year to date, we have continued to execute against our objectives to improve gross margins, keep operating expenses flat as a percent of sales, while increasing market share and reducing dealer and factory inventory," said Twomey. "Our improved sales and earnings results in the fiscal 2011 first half demonstrate the traction we are gaining."

Business Line Results Snowmobile sales grew 7 percent to $91.5 million in the second quarter compared to $85.7 million in the prior-year quarter, led by higher international sales to distributors. Year-to-date snowmobile sales increased 5 percent to $108.6 million versus $103.7 million in the same period last year.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) sales rose 9 percent to $56.6 million in the second quarter versus $51.7 million in the prior-year quarter, chiefly driven by sales of the company's new Prowler HDX utility vehicle. Year to date ATV sales increased 1 percent to $84.5 million compared to $83.9 million in the first six months of fiscal 2010.

Sales of parts, garments and accessories (PG&A) in the second quarter declined 4 percent to $27.6 million versus $28.8 million in the prior-year quarter, primarily due to the timing of shipments. Year to date, PG&A sales totaled $46.1 million compared to $48.1 million in the year-ago period.

Outlook "We remain on track to deliver improved operating results and increased profitability again this fiscal year," Twomey said. "Longer-term, Arctic Cat continues to be well-positioned for further growth when the retail power sports market recovers."

Arctic Cat is focused on improving its profitability in a continued low-demand recreational vehicle market. The company's fiscal 2011 outlook includes the following assumptions: ATV industry retail sales declining approximately 15 to 20 percent; snowmobile industry retail sales in a range of up or down approximately 5 percent; Arctic Cat dealer inventories declining 20 to 30 percent; improving gross margins between 200 to 300 basis points; achieving flat operating expense levels as a percent of sales; increasing cash flow from operations; and ending the year with more cash on the balance sheet.

Based on its year-to-date results and expectations of future performance, Arctic Cat is raising its full-year sales and earnings guidance for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. Arctic Cat now estimates fiscal 2011 net sales in the range of $453 million to $463 million. The company now anticipates that fiscal 2011 earnings will be in the range of $0.40 to $0.55 per diluted share, driven by increased international revenue, as well as increased gross margins resulting from favorable commodity costs and lower sales incentives than planned. The company's previous guidance anticipated fiscal 2011 earnings of $0.18 to $0.33 per diluted share on net sales of $447 million to $460 million.

Arctic Cat Announces Leadership Succession Plans

Christopher Twomey to Retire as CEO at Year End, Remain Executive Board Chair; President and COO Claude Jordan to Succeed Twomey as CEO

MINNEAPOLIS--Arctic Cat Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAT) announced today that Christopher Twomey, 62, plans to retire as chief executive officer at the end of December 2010. He will continue to serve as executive board chair to ensure a smooth transition. The company named Claude Jordan, 54, to succeed Twomey as president and chief executive officer on January 1, 2011.

“During the past two years, Claude played a significant role in the company’s return to profitability, despite a recession that hit the power sports industry hard. His understanding, energy and passion for this business will serve Arctic Cat well.”

The company’s leadership succession plan accommodates Twomey’s decision to retire after serving as Arctic Cat’s CEO for 24 years. He became president and CEO in 1986, was named a director of the company in 1987 and assumed the board chair position in 2003. During his tenure, Twomey led Arctic Cat through an initial public offering in 1990, increased the number of employees from 99 to more than 1,300 people, and grew revenues from $7.5 million to more than $450 million in fiscal 2010. Under Twomey’s leadership, Arctic Cat also entered the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) business, which now accounts for the largest percent of the company’s revenues. Twomey’s contributions to the industry were recognized by his being named to the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in 2008.

“First, the board wants to thank Chris for his leadership of the company for more than two decades. He built Arctic Cat into a market leader in the power sports industry, and is leaving the company in strong financial shape with an outstanding team. We look forward to continuing to work with Chris as board chair,” said Kenneth Roering, lead director of Arctic Cat’s board. “The board also congratulates Claude on his new role. He has a proven record of success at Arctic Cat and a deep understanding of the company’s business. We are confident in his ability to continue to profitably grow the company and enhance shareholder value.”

Jordan joined Arctic Cat as president and chief operating officer in 2008, and was elected to the company’s board of directors in August 2010. During that time, Jordan has been responsible for Arctic Cat’s operations and has led the company’s ATV business for the past two years, implementing significant product line changes and increasing Arctic Cat’s ATV market share.

Twomey commented: “During the past two years, Claude played a significant role in the company’s return to profitability, despite a recession that hit the power sports industry hard. His understanding, energy and passion for this business will serve Arctic Cat well.”

“I’m excited to build upon Arctic Cat’s strong reputation, and I look forward to working with our dedicated employees to grow this business,” Jordan stated. “My initial priorities are to continue carrying out Arctic Cat’s strategic plan and to further enhance the company’s profitability and operational efficiency. Arctic Cat is well-positioned for success. We have the vision, proven strategies and talented people to achieve our long-term goals.”

Before joining Arctic Cat, Jordan was employed most recently in executive positions with The Home Depot and General Electric. Jordan served as vice president of The Home Depot and president/general manager of its THD At-Home Services, Inc. business from 2003 until 2008.

Prior to that, Jordan was with General Electric Company from 1998 to 2003. During his last four years with General Electric, he served as president and CEO of GE Water Technologies, a worldwide water treatment manufacturing, sales and services business. Before heading GE Water Technologies, Jordan spent a year in business development with GE Power Systems, managing mergers and acquisitions for new initiatives.

Jordan earned a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., a master's degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Can-Am Commander Shakedown Run at Sand Mountain

By Bob Balunda, Factory UTV

After patiently waiting months for delivery of our Can-Am Commander 1000 XT, we finally got the call it was in! Our good friend Denny Robinson took delivery of a 1000 XT one day earlier so we loaded our two brand spanking new 1000’s onto our flatbed trailer and headed for Sand Mountain Nevada for a shake down cruise. Sand Mountain is located in the Nevada high desert east of Fallon on Highway 50, infamously referred to as “The Loneliest Road in America”. A great testing ground for UTV’s, Sand Mountain’s 600 ft tall Comp Hill is as tough a UTV performance test as can be found. The soft sand of its tall steep face rejects climbing attempts from all but the most powerful of UTV’s, while the surrounding deserts provide miles of washes, technical sections and fast fire roads.
We got up bright and early to gorgeous blue skies, unloaded the UTV’s and headed out for a preliminary feeling out of what these new machines were all about.  The comfort level of the stock seating is hands down the best in the business and Denny and I both commented that the XT’s were all day comfortable right out of the box. The cockpit more closely resembles a trophy truck than it does the other OEM UTV’s and performance wise Can-Am has raised the bar to another level as these 976cc fuel injected Rotax V-twins flat get with the program. Although 5 point restraint systems are usually our first mod with any UTV, we hadn’t had time yet to fabricate a restraint bar, so we rode with the stock seat belts on this trip and they served their purpose. We loved the innovative side netting attachment setup on the XT, simply grab the buckle and snap it into place. A well thought out passenger grab handle located on the center console makes you wonder how we got this far into UTV development before someone thought of it. We have absolutely no complaints with how BRP laid out the controls, everything worked and felt flawless. Ergonomics, fit and finish are simply second to none in the UTV industry.
Once out in the dunes, we realized we needed to air down the stock tires to get any type of reasonable traction. In fact our first attempts at climbing the face of comp hill left us about half way up before we had to turn back a bit embarrassed. Not to worry, with the tires all set at 5 psi, we were smoking modified long travel RZRs with paddle tires on them. Make no mistake about it, there is a new sheriff in UTV land. Grinning ear to ear, we raced round and round Nascar style in Sand Mountain’s huge Superbowl having as much fun as I’ve ever had in any UTV stock or modified. Anywhere we pointed the XT it went without complaint, which is a bit different than what we’ve become accustomed to with stock UTV’s in the sand. The machines do feel a bit top heavy or “tippy”, but with a set of 2 inch wheel spacers that tippy feel was mostly eliminated. The big 1000 XTs surprised us with their duning ability as waiting around for the UTV’s to catch up is simply no longer an issue. There can be little doubt with long travel suspension, paddle tires and exhaust these 1000 Can-Am’s are going to be very, very popular with the duning crowd.
Out in the desert the Can-Am’s were even more impressive. Even with the less than stellar stock XT suspension, we were able to charge hard across the desert landscape where only the bigger whoops and g-outs made us back off the throttle. Its civil manners were excellent as well when we headed towards the mountain tops on sight seeing adventures. In 4wd Sport mode the machine tracked through high speed washes like it was on rails as we chased each other relentlessly. When the pace picked up we both felt the big Commander felt a bit vague in the handling department in 2wd as the front end hunted and pecked around for where it wanted to go. The good news is that unlike a lot of other UTVs, the XTs seemed as quick in 4wd as they do 2wd. Steering with the rear end in 2wd Sport mode on smooth slick fire roads is frankly more fun than a person should be allowed to have, as the Rotax power and quick steering ratio made long power slides effortless.  Following Denny around can often lead to zany adventure and/or a throwing up of the hands simply questioning WHY? and this trip proved no different.  He found some seriously technical sections that put the 2 XTs through the ringer and the Commanders handled every obstacle we could find with ease. Engine braking is simply phenomenal, we’ve never tested a CVT that worked better. Down the steepest of descents the engine braking instinctively slowed the big XT’s with minimum or no brake pedal required, in a word, outstanding. The steering got a bit stiff in the big rocks, but nothing more than a little extra effort was required. While we didn’t get into any muddy conditions, the XTs both preformed admirably in 4wd low range, no complaints here. Without question the overall performance, ride comfort and ample storage of the two rear beds send the Commanders directly to the head of the UTV adventure touring class.
While our initial impressions of the XTs were excellent, all is not perfect in Commander land. The noise level of the running gear when speeds exceed 40mph is a bit excessive and sent us searching through our trailers for ear plugs and/or trading our shortie helmets for full face helmets that covered the ears. On our first high speed rip down a long straight fire road, Denny actually pulled over because he thought something was wrong. I told him mine was just as loud and subsequently we spoke to a Can-Am Renegade rider who confirmed the Can-Ams had a very loud running gear. We’ll be looking into sound deadening modifications once we get it in the shop and start tearing into it.  Another issue we aren’t too excited about is the clunk that can be felt whenever you change gears and step on the gas. We’ve been told this is a normal trait for Can-Ams and frankly after a couple days it seemed a minor annoyance we’ll just learn to live with. Heat is also an issue as outside temperature on our desert ride approached 90 degrees; we could really feel the engine heat in the slow technical sections of trail. Sticking a cup of cold chocolate milk in one of the factory cup holders would net you a cup of hot chocolate in no time. Again once we get the Can-Am into the Factory UTV service bay we’ll be looking at ways to mitigate the heat issue through the use of heat insulation material and header wrap.
Our overall first impression of the new Commander 1000 can be summed up in one word and that word is WOW!  There is no question in our mind that Can-Am has raised the bar in just about every area of UTV performance, comfort and style. While those who frequent 50 inch trail limits will still be happy with the Polaris RZR, all others should take a serious look at Can-Am’s lineup. As an aftermarket UTV parts manufacturer we’re pretty excited about the platform Can-Am has provided us and rest assured Factory UTV is hard at work on UHMW undercarriage protection, 5 point restraint systems, long travel suspension and the list goes on...
We predict Can-Am has a winner on its hands that will force the other OEM’s back to the drawing board. That’s the natural progression of the motor sports industry and we the buying public are the beneficiaries of that progress. Very nice first effort Can-Am, now have you got any recommendations for wiping these smiles off our faces?

Polaris profit tops estimates in 3rd Quarter

Fueled by sales increases in the side-by-side vehicle market, Polaris Industries bucked the trend by posting a 51% increase in third-quarter earnings compared to the same period last year. Overall sales grew 33% to $580.1 million while the Medina, Minnesota-based company posted earnings of $47.2 million, or a record $1.37 per diluted share. The results beat estimates by analysts, who had forecasted earnings per share of $1.14 and sales of $522.1 million.

"We gained market share in every product line in North America and in our international markets," said Polaris Chief Executive Officer Scott Wine during a conference call.

Sales from Polaris’ On-Road division, predominantly Victory Motorcycles, did its share to boost sales figures by more than doubling to $20.1 million, a gain of 116% in comparison to year-ago totals. It was the fourth consecutive quarter Victory has enjoyed market share gains. Sales of Victory Motorcycles in markets outside of North America also increased, with sales up over 100% for the 2010 third quarter compared to the same quarter in 2009. Sales of parts, garments and accessories were also up 12% to $93.3 million.

Side-by-side vehicles like the Polaris Ranger were responsible for most of the 49% increase in sales of off-road vehicles during the third quarter, compensating for otherwise soft sales of standard ATVs. The segment is Polaris' largest and accounts for approximately two-thirds of total sales.

Polaris Defense also announced it landed a $67 million, five-year contract yesterday to build Ultra-Light Utility Vehicles for the Army National Guard. Polaris intends to build the Army-spec Ranger Crew 800s and Ranger 6x6 Side-by-Side vehicles at its Spirit Lake, Iowa facility, and recently added over 270 full-time and seasonal jobs to meet the increase in production.

Full Disclosure Courtesy of Polaris Industries Press Release:

Polaris Industries 2010 Business Outlook
As a result of its continued strong retail sales growth, Polaris now expects full year 2010 earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $4.17 to $4.20, which represents an increase of 37 to 38 percent when compared to earnings of $3.05 per diluted share for the full year 2009. Sales for the full year 2010 are now expected to grow in the range of 24 to 25 percent over full year 2009 sales of $1.57 billion. During the fourth quarter of 2010, the Company expects total sales to increase in the range of 22 to 24 percent over the fourth quarter 2009. The fourth quarter 2010 expectations include incremental costs related to the manufacturing realignment and higher incentive compensation expenses compared to the 2009 fourth quarter. Fourth quarter 2010 earnings are expected to be in the range of $1.45 to $1.48 per diluted share, up 11 to 13 percent compared to earnings of $1.31 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2009.

Wine commented, “The positive feedback on our product introductions from our July dealer meeting, coupled with our continued margin expansion and encouraging results from our recently expanded Max Velocity Program (“MVP”) go-to-market process, gives us confidence in our ability to finish the year with strong operating results. While we remain focused on extending the momentum experienced in the first nine months through the end of the year, our initial thoughts on 2011 are also quite positive. Our new product pipeline is strong and operational excellence continues to be a priority. I am confident we can continue to drive profitability with the goal of generating industry leading returns for our shareholders in 2011 and beyond.”

Off-Road vehicles (“ORV") sales, which include sales of both ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) and RANGER side-by-side vehicles, increased 49 percent during the third quarter 2010 from the third quarter 2009. This increase reflects significant market share gains for both ATVs and side-by-side vehicles driven by industry leading product offerings and the success of the MVP retail go-to-market process. The MVP program was expanded and made available to all North American ORV dealers beginning in the 2010 third quarter. During the third quarter, the Company began shipping several new model year 2011 ORV products including a mid-sized RANGER side-by-side with increased power, a 4-person mid-sized RANGER Crew and a RANGER with the Company’s first 24 horsepower diesel engine. In addition, shipments to Bobcat of the differentiated utility vehicle, which began shipping in the second quarter, accelerated in the 2010 third quarter. Polaris’ North American ORV unit retail sales to consumers increased approximately 20 percent for the 2010 third quarter from the third quarter last year, with side-by-side vehicle retail sales increasing significantly and ATV retail sales up in the mid-single digit percent range. North American dealer inventories of ORVs declined 30 percent during the third quarter compared to 2009 third quarter levels. During the third quarter of 2010 the number of ORV units shipped to dealers approximated the number of units retailed from dealers to consumers in North America. As the Company had done for the past four years, during the 2009 third quarter Polaris shipped significantly fewer ORV units to dealers than what was retailed from dealers to consumers in North America.

Sales of the On-Road division, which primarily consists of Victory motorcycles, increased 116 percent during the third quarter of 2010 when compared to the same period in 2009. The North American heavyweight cruiser and touring motorcycle industry remained weak during the quarter, but Victory continued to benefit from the actions implemented over the past year to accelerate growth. Victory unit retail sales were very strong during the third quarter, increasing more than 50 percent in North America compared to the third quarter of 2009, resulting in market share gains and retail sales growth for the fourth consecutive quarter. Demand increased across the Victory product line-up, particularly the new Cross Country and Cross Roads touring models. North American dealer inventory of Victory motorcycles declined 32 percent in the 2010 third quarter compared to 2009 third quarter levels. The sale of Victory motorcycles in markets outside of North America also continues to increase, with sales up over 100 percent for the 2010 third quarter compared to the same period last year.

Parts, Garments, and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased 12 percent during the third quarter 2010 compared to the same period last year primarily due to increased RANGER™ side-by-side vehicle and Victory motorcycle related PG&A sales.

Snowmobile sales decreased six percent during the 2010 third quarter compared to the third quarter of 2009. The third quarter 2010 decrease reflects the impact of a modest delay in shipments of snowmobiles closer to expected consumer demand in the winter season compared to the same period last year.

Gross profit as a percentage of sales was 26.0 percent for the third quarter of 2010, an increase of 190 basis points from 24.1 percent for the third quarter of 2009. Gross profit dollars increased 44 percent to $150.7 million for the third quarter of 2010 compared to $104.9 million for the third quarter of 2009. The increase in gross profit dollars and the 190 basis points increase in the gross profit margin percentage in the third quarter 2010 resulted primarily from continued product cost reduction efforts, production volume increases, and favorable pricing and foreign currency movements compared to the third quarter of last year. These increases were partially offset by manufacturing realignment costs, an increase in commodity costs and higher sales promotion costs.

Operating expenses for the third quarter 2010 increased 38 percent to $87.1 million, or 15.0 percent of sales, compared to $63.2 million, or 14.5 percent of sales, for the third quarter of 2009. Operating expenses in absolute dollars for the third quarter 2010 increased primarily due to higher incentive compensation plan expenses driven by the higher expected profitability for 2010 and the recent higher stock price. Incremental investments in growth initiatives also contributed to higher operating expenses.

Income from financial services was $4.1 million during the third quarter 2010 compared to $3.9 million in the third quarter of 2009.

Gain on securities held for sale was $1.6 million for the third quarter of 2010 resulting from the sale of the Company’s remaining investment in KTM Power Sports AG during the quarter.

Non-operating other income was $1.5 million in the third quarter of 2010 compared to $1.3 million in the third quarter of 2009. The income is the result of foreign currency exchange rate movements and the resulting effects on foreign currency transactions related to the international subsidiaries.

Manufacturing Realignment
Execution of the previously announced manufacturing realignment is underway and remains on schedule. The realignment will consolidate manufacturing operations into existing operations in Roseau, Minnesota and Spirit Lake, Iowa and a new facility in Monterrey, Mexico. Construction is underway on the new facility in Monterrey and the building is expected to be completed in the first half of 2011. The Company expects to record pretax transition charges to its income statement in the range of $22 million to $25 million and incur capital expenditures of approximately $35 million over the next few years related to the implementation of the manufacturing realignment. The Company expects to realize pretax savings in excess of $30 million annually when the transition is completed. The exit costs and startup costs pertaining to the realignment for the full year 2010 have increased slightly and are now expected to be in the range of a total of $11 to $12 million. During the 2010 third quarter, $2.4 million of exit costs and $1.3 million of startup costs were incurred, which are reflected principally in cost of sales on the income statement.

Financial position and cash flow
Cash and cash equivalents increased significantly to $264.5 million at September 30, 2010 compared to $72.8 million at September 30, 2009. Borrowings under the credit agreement were $200 million at September 30, 2010 and 2009. The Company’s debt-to-total-capital ratio was 40 percent at September 30, 2010, compared to 53 percent at the same time last year. Net cash provided by operating activities for the year-to-date period ended September 30, 2010, totaled $156.9 million, a 53 percent increase compared to $102.5 million for the same period last year. Higher net income and lower working capital investments for the 2010 year-to-date period compared to the same period last year are the primary reasons for the increased cash provided by operating activities. The Company paid dividends during the first nine months of 2010 totaling $39.5 million, compared to $37.6 million in the first nine months of 2009, at a rate per share in 2010 that is slightly higher than last year’s per share rate.

Wheel to Wheel Racing at VORRA Short Course

RENO,NV OCTOBER 18, 2010: With a full weekend of warm California sun shining down on the Prairie City OHV Park, round seven of short course racing had the crowd on their feet cheering. The track was slightly different at the newly renovated park adding some more mileage to the loop and increasing the overall speeds.

Sunday’s Car and Truck racing had the pits full of powerful vehicles. Each race was a battle, but there were clean sweeps by Sam Berri in Class 1, Patrick Timmons in Class 10, Brad Falin in Ultra 4, Gary Herrod in Class 11, Jay Schroeder in Class 9 and Tim Compton in the Pilots. They all impressively took top honors in all three motos for their respective class wins. Each moto consisted of six intense laps to make it to the checker flag first.

GroupT had a different winner in each heat race, KC Keller, Jake Povey and Mike Koenig, but it was Total Chaos Mike Koenig that took the overall win with two second places.

The biggest growth class for this year has been the UTV class with six cars showing up for the green flag. Stock and modified UTV’s set the pace around the track and battled for the win. The consistency of finishes put Jon Crowley on the podium with Rocker Head in second.

The season points battle continues to be close, with just one short course race remaining to crown the overall winners. Sam Berri pulled away in the lead with Mike Koenig in second only 16 points behind. Red Team Racing maintained their third overall position and first place in their class. It looks like all of the classes have some battles going on, but Class 10 will certainly come down to the final round to determine the winner.

“This was another great round of racing,” exclaimed Wes Harbor, VORRA race promoter. “The Halloween race at the end of the month is always my favorite, not only is it the season end where the final points put the winners on the overall podium, but it is fun to see all the families here enjoying themselves.” The final round of the season will be at Prairie City OHV area October 30-31, 2010. Saturday will host the ATV race from PeeWee to Pros. Saturday night there will be a BBQ, costume party and kids pumpkin carving contest. On the track Sunday, there will be a powder puff and mechanic race after a full day of high horsepower racing.

RANGER RZR 4 Takes the Blue Water Desert Classic

Minneapolis, Oct 20, 2010– A RANGER RZR 4, piloted by Polaris Regional Sales Manager Matt Parks, took first place both days and first overall, in the Pro UTV Class, at the Best In The Desert, Blue Water Desert Challenge this past weekend, in Parker, Arizona.

The Holz-built RANGER RZR 4, nicknamed the “Baja Bobsled,” worked flawlessly and was victorious over 18 other UTVs, one of the largest UTV entries in premier desert racing in some time. Parks and co-pilot Polaris District Sales Manager Bryce Wernsman endured limited visibility from dust and unbelievably deep silt areas on the track that the RANGER RZR 4 hammered through with no problem.

“This was our first race for the newly-built race RANGER RZR 4,” said Parks. “The car ran great both days and it was really fast, particularly in the rough. It was a great weekend and a fantastic outcome.”

The race RANGER RZR 4 was made possible by Walker Evans Racing, Holz Racing Products, Maxxis Tires (zero flats), Mastercraft Safety, Kroyer Racing Engines, Utendorfer Graphics, Muzzys, PURE Polaris Lubricants, the WWCBG, and was supported by the Baja Bobsled Chase Team (Bill Abshier of Valley Cycle Motorsports, Jason Spiess, Todd Douglass, and Danny Flowers).

First Impressions of the Can-Am Commander in the Dunes

By Tim Berendes, SDR Motorsports

So, took the Can-Am Commander out this weekend and put her through just over 100 miles of break in, which basically means I drove the piss out of it to see what I could break.

First off the bad:

The cup holders are above the engine compartment and it made my water to hot to drink. The glove box is a bit flimsy and catches on one of the plastic fasteners on the shroud. It is an easy fix but annoyed me every time I opened it up. I have the xt model and the shocks are junk. We pretty much knew that but blowing through the travel was commonplace and a bit uncomfortable for a guy spoiled by long travel and good shock set up. The X model should be much better in this dept. Out of the box.

Other than that it was bullet proof, and trust me, we tried to break it.

I had no mechanical issues whatsoever. It didn't overheat even in a fast (more on that in a minute) dune run in 90 plus heat.

Now to the good stuff:

I would like to quote Ferris Bueller here in describing my overall impression of the Can-Am Commander. "If you have the means, I highly recommend it"

I've driven just about every side x side in just about every form over the years and nothing compares. Other than maybe a turbo RZR or Weber RZR it's not even close.

The days of you guys with buggies patiently waiting for the utv guys to catch up are over. This thing hauls butt, and it's bone stock.

When we first arrived I drove it with the stock 27 Big Horn 2.0 tires and couldn't believe the acceleration and how squarely it was. Switched to four wheel drive and aired down the tires and it was much better. Driving across the flats 68 mph was top speed in both two and four wheel drive. Dunedin pretty good with plenty of power but needed more tire. It would spin the stockers everywhere with just a tap of the throttle.

Swapped out the stickers for a set of full buff smoothies in front and a special cut rear STU Sand Blaster (big thanks to Dave at Fullerton Sand Sports for getting them to me in time) and this is where the fun really started.

Headed over to Olds... 40 mph at the top when I started really getting in the throttle after the whoops. With better suspension I could have gone a lot faster. It was pretty fun coming from a 686 built rhino.

In the big dunes it went everywhere, and could accelerate up hill to the next bowl. Keeping good lines was easy and other than having to be on the brakes for g-outs and whoops it was flawless. Never felt tippy on transitions and had enough power to actually roll up to a hill and power up it.

We followed a couple of buggies for awhile and had no problems keeping up and holding the line.

Overall, I was absolutely blown away. For a stock machine it was simply awesome. Worth every penny.

Federal Action to Allow More Ethanol in Gasoline Could Damage Motorcycles

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to allow the ethanol portion of blended gasoline to be increased from the current 10 percent to 15 percent for certain vehicles, which could pose a danger for motorcycles, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.
On Oct. 13, the EPA announced approval of a waiver for E15. Under the decision, E15 is now approved for use in model year 2007 and newer cars and light trucks. It isn't approved for use in any other gasoline-fueled engines. To see the EPA news release, go to US-EPA-E15.
"The AMA supports the use of cleaner-burning fuels, but we are concerned that gasoline containing more than 10 percent ethanol could result in premature engine damage or failure while a motorcycle is being ridden," said Imre Szauter, AMA government affairs manager. "We're also concerned about any degradation in performance, fuel economy and rideability that may result from the long-term use of blended fuels with greater than 10 percent ethanol."
The EPA, in allowing more ethanol in gas, specifically said that its decision covers model year 2007 and newer cars and light trucks, and no other vehicles at this time, including motorcycles.
"Motorcycle manufacturers only certify their machines to run on gasoline or a blend with up to 10 percent ethanol, which is known as E10," Szauter said. "So using the 15 percent blend in a motorcycle could void the bike's warranty."
Growth Energy, an ethanol lobbying group, asked the EPA in March 2009 to allow gasoline to contain up to 15 percent ethanol. It's part of an effort to meet a congressional mandate to increase to 36 billion gallons the amount of renewable fuel available in the United States by 2022. Ethanol, made from corn and other crops, is considered a renewable fuel.
For more than three years the AMA has been on the record opposing increases in the ethanol level allowed in gasoline until studies show that an increase won't damage motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) engines, and won't make motorcycles emit more nitrogen oxides than are allowed by the EPA.
"The message we want to deliver today is that once E15 gas is offered for sale, there are a variety of reasons not to put it in your motorcycle or ATV gas tank," Szauter said. "In fact, the EPA even says you aren't allowed to put E15 in your bike."
The EPA said a decision on the use of E15 in model year 2001 to 2006 vehicles will be made after new test results are received. The EPA is also proposing E15 pump labeling requirements so that consumers don't mistakenly put E15 in the wrong vehicles.
Bob Greco, spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, told The Wall Street Journal that by approving E15 without full testing, the EPA is putting "politics before science."
"You're going to have fuels in the marketplace that could damage engines and void warranties," Greco told the newspaper.
The AMA is a member of AllSAFE, the Alliance for a Safe Alternative Fuels Environment, a group formed to ensure that fuels containing ethanol are promoted in a thoughtful manner. AllSAFE is made up of associations that represent consumer and commercial users of ethanol blends, manufacturers of boats, vehicles, engines and equipment, and retailers who sell gasoline and ethanol-fuel blends.

LOS ANGELES—As the race clock quickly clicks down to 30 days remaining before the green flag drops and as teams finalize logistics, vehicle prep and prerunning trips, entries continue to arrive from around the globe for November’s 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja, the legendary granddaddy of all desert races.
This year’s legendary desert classic, the final event of the five-race 2010 SCORE Desert Series, will be held Nov. 16-20 in Mexico on a brutally-rugged 1072.67-mile Sal Fish signature desert race course.
With massive crowds reaching nearly 250,000 anticipated to again be spread out along the rugged course that travels on both sides of the peninsula, the world’s most famous desert race will start in Ensenada, Baja California and finish all the way down the peninsula in La Paz in Baja California Sur.
This year will be the 36th time in the first 43 years of the storied race that it has started in Ensenada and it will be the 18th time in has finished in La Paz.
It’s the oldest and most well known of all desert races, and it remains as the single most appealing accomplishment to a driver. Since 1967, the mother of all desert races has been run over the mysterious and majestic Baja California peninsula.
With over 300 expected entries for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs competing in 33 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes in the internationally televised race, entries have already come from 35 U.S. states and 15 countries.  In addition to the 35 U.S. States, racers have entered from Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and the US Territory of Guam. With 30 days before the green flag drops on Thursday, Nov. 17, entries will be accepted up to race morning.
As the World Series is to baseball and the Super Bowl to football, the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 stands as tall at the pinnacle of the motorsports world today as it did when it began 42 years ago.
This year’s historic 43rd anniversary race will be held Nov. 16-20. It will start and finish in the heart of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico and finish on the outskirts of LaPaz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. It will be the 43rd anniversary of the race shrouded in mystery that continues to lure adventurers and manufacturers from across the globe who all share the dream to conquer the Baja.
“Without the SCORE Baja 1000, desert racing would not be where it is today,” said Sal Fish, SCORE International’s President and CEO, which has sanctioned and produced the event since 1975. “The SCORE Baja 1000 continues to draw interest from all over the world and we now find second and even third generation racers appearing at the starting line with their family patriarchs cheering for their off-spring. This event continues to be the focal point of the SCORE Desert Series each year and to celebrate our 43rd anniversary with a peninsula run will surely add another colorful chapter to the legacy of the SCORE Baja 1000.”
The first known record run occurred in 1962. Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr. timed their trip from Tijuana to La Paz on a pair of Honda 250 motorcycles. Ekins made it in 39 hours, 54 minutes, Robertson in less than an hour slower. There were no official timers, of course, and to establish that they had made the trip, the two motorcycle racers time-stamped a sheet of paper in the Tijuana telegraph office and time-stamped it again at the telegraph office when they arrived in La Paz.
Capitalizing on the pioneer effort of Ekins and Robertson, Chevrolet commissioned car builder Bill Stroppe to prepare a small fleet of trucks for the run to La Paz. Late that year they left Long Beach, Calif., and all of them reached La Paz. Advertising and publicity campaigns heralded the feat as “the roughest run under the sun.”
Enthusiast Ed Pearlman established the Mexican 1000. It started officially in Tijuana on October 31, 1967 with 68 entries. They actually motored at leisure speeds to Ensenada and restarted the next day.
Pearlman continued to organize the Mexican 1000, which came to be known as the Baja 1000. In 1968, Pearlman moved the start of the race to Ensenada, where it stayed with one exception until 1993. In 1972 he started it at Mexicali and ran the first half of the race down the east coast of the peninsula through the treacherous Three Sisters section. Pre-running for this race, Parnelli Jones and Walker Evans were among a group of competitors who nearly got swept out to sea during a tropical storm.
Pearlman’s last race, from Ensenada to La Paz, was in 1973. At that point, Mexican officials revoked his permits to stage races in Baja.
After the fuel crisis of 1974 forced local officials to cancel the event, SCORE International, founded by the late Mickey Thompson and headed soon after by Sal Fish, was invited by the northern state of Baja California to hold the race in 1975. The Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 became a loop event starting and ending in Ensenada.
In 1979, the government of Baja California Sur granted permission to resume the Ensenada-to-La Paz format and SCORE has used this route intermittently ever since.
The 1979 race was notable for Walker Evans’ overall win in a Dodge truck, the first truck to win the overall title of the race.
In its first 42 years, the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 has started 35 times in Ensenada, three times in Mexicali (1972, 1993, 1994), twice in Tijuana (1967, 1995) once in Santo Tomas (1998) and once in Ojos Negros (1999). The legendary race has finished in Ensenada 20 times, in La Paz 17 times, in Mexicali two times (1993, 1994), twice in Cabo San Lucas (2000, 2007) and once in Ojos Negros (1999).
Prior to the current global recession, entries and finishers for this legendary race peaked in 2006 and 2007 when a race-record 431 vehicles started the 2006 race to La Paz (231 finishers) and a race-record 237 finished the 2007 40th anniversary race to Cabo San Lucas (424 starters).
The famous and not-so-famous have tried their hand at conquering the Baja and they have come from all walks of life. Mark Thatcher, son of Great Britian’s then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher, raced in the 1982 SCORE Baja 1000. Celebrities James Garner, Ted Nugent and the late Steve McQueen all battled the Baja in the early 1970s and many racers from other forms of motorsports crossed over to try their skills.
Among the drivers from other arenas who have tested the Baja were Indy Car racers Rick and Roger Mears, Parnelli Jones, Danny Ongias, Danny Sullivan, Jimmy Vasser, Buddy Rice, Sebastien Bourdais, Oriol Servia, Roberto Guerrero, Michel Jourdain Jr., Johnny Unser and Mike and Robbie Groff, NASCAR’s Robby Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Boris Said, Brendan Gaughan, Brian Ickler and Justin Lofton, SCCA legend Elliot Forbes-Robinson, World Rally Championships’ Armin Schwarz, Armin Kremer and Andreas Aigner, world motorcycle champions Malcolm Smith, Larry Roeseler and Destry Abbott, Motocross legends Ricky Johnson and Jeremy McGrath, XGames star Travis Pastrana, drag racers Don Prudhomme and Larry Minor, Person Watercraft racing star Chris MacClugage and legendary SCORE founder and motorsports innovator Mickey Thompson.
The late Academy Award winning actor, racer and race team owner Paul Newman raced in the 2004 event. Jesse James, of ‘Monster Garage’ fame, and Hollywood film and TV star Patrick Dempsey have both raced this classic in the several times in the last seven years.
This year’s race will commemorate the achievements of legendary desert racers like Rod Hall, Ron Bishop, Johnny Johnson, and Larry Roeseler. Hall, who will turn 72 on Nov. 22, has a record 21 class wins (including one overall win in 1972), and is the only racer who has competed in all 42 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Bishop is the only racer who competed in the first 40 SCORE Baja 1000 races.
Hall will be racing this year for the first time in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division where he will split the driving with his sons Josh and Chad.
Bishop is the only racer who competed every year of the first 40 on a Motorcycle, but is not scheduled to race this year at this time. Johnson, now retired, had 15 class wins, amazingly in eight different classes.
Roeseler, has won 17 times in this race, including 13 overall wins (10 on a motorcycle). Roeseler will share driving duties this year in SCORE Trophy-Truck with brothers Tim and Ed Herbst in the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150. Roeseler won the unlimited Class 1 for four consecutive years (2004-2007), driving with the youngest of the three racing brothers, Troy Herbst, in the Smithbuilt-Ford open-wheel desert race car that was known as the ‘Land Shark’.
In 2008, Roeseler was split the driving with driver of record and team owner Roger Norman where they were the overall 4-wheel and SCORE Trophy-Truck champions and the pair was second in 2009.  This year, Norman, who drew the first starting position for the 4-wheel vehicles in this year’s race, is scheduled to drive solo down the Baja California peninsula.
Lured by the same siren that enraptured the Ekins brothers in the 1950s, the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 remains as the No. 1 target of adventurers the world over, not to mention the cadre of pro and semi-pro desert racers who consider it the fitting climax to their racing season each year.
The motorcycle and ATV classes will start their journey at 6:30 a.m. (Thursday, Nov. 18) with the car and truck classes starting at approximately 11:45 a.m., or four hours after the last ATV leaves the line. The fastest finishers are expected to complete the course in approximately 19 hours.
The race will start on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the picturesque Bahia de Todos Santos in front of the historical Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada. It will finish on the outskirts of La Paz near the Grand Plaza Hotel, race headquarters for the southern half of the event.
Pre-race festivities on Wednesday, Nov. 17, for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, including the vastly popular tech and contingency of all vehicles and the SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Boulevard Costero in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center.  The pre-race mandatory driver/rider briefing will be held Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral Room at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. Racer registration will be held at the San Nicolas Resort Hotel from Saturday, Nov. 13 through Wednesday, Nov. 17. Media registration will be held at the San Nicolas Resort Hotel from Noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 and from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17.
The post-race awards celebration and fiesta will be held on the Malecon in downtown La Paz, starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20.  The entire race will be conducted on Pacific Standard Time.
While entries will be accepted up to race morning, late entries will be assigned the next available number and starting position within each class.
The car and truck classes with the most entries to date are SCORE Trophy-Truck (36), Class 1 (18), SCORE Lite (11) and Class 1-2/1600 (10).
Among the motorcycle and ATV classes, Class 22 for open motorcycles has the most entries to date with eight.
Leading the six Sportsman classes in the race is Sportsman Motorcycle over 250cc which had 35 entries so far.
While Norman received the first 4-wheel starting position during the Oct. 9 computerized drawing, starting first among the motorcycle and ATV classes will be Gabriel Williams, of Provo, Utah, on a Honda CRF450X motorcycle.
Norman, who won the 2008 SCORE Baja 1000 overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck with Larry Roeseler as his second-driver, plans to drive solo in this year’s race down the peninsula. Williams has also confirmed that he will attempt to ride solo in the race on a motorcycle.
Drawing the first start among the ATV classes was the Class 25 team led by Felipe Velez, San Felipe, Mexico, who will ride a Honda TRX700X.
Drawing first start in Class 1 was SCORE Baja 500 class winner Steve Appleton, Boise Idaho, in a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car, while first off in SCORE Lite will be the team of Justin Davis, Chino, Calif./Daniel Folts in a Seagrove-VW.  Leading the Class 1-2/1600 field will be the team of Jay Reichert/Cottonwood Shores, Texas/Clarence Dorrance, Austin, Texas, in a Jimco-VW.
Allowing a larger window of time than ever before, SCORE, completing its 37th year as the world’s foremost desert racing sanctioning body, started official pre-running of the course Oct. 8, from San Felipe all the way to La Paz.  Practice on the race course from Ojos Negros to La Paz will begin Wednesday, Oct. 27 and pre-running from the start line in Ensenada to Ojos Negros will be allowed only on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 16 and 17.
The challenging race course for this year is very similar to 2006, the last time the race finished in La Paz, although the terrain has obviously changed significantly because of weather conditions and natural use.
With 10 mandatory checkpoints spread down the peninsula, the course starts on the Pacific Ocean-side of Baja California in Ensenada and heads southeast to San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez before heading south through Coco’s Corner, Bahia de Los Angeles, San Ignacio, back to the Pacific at San Juanico, then back to the Sea of Cortez at Loreto, back to the Pacific at Ciudad Insurgentes heading down along the Pacific through Santa Rita before turning back east and down into La Paz for the finish.
All entries are provided with GPS programs defining the course and all are required to utilize special data recording devices that plot the actual route and speeds each vehicle takes during the mammoth race.
This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour NBC Sports special for the seventh consecutive year, airing on Dec. 19 on the NBC Television Network. It will also air on a delayed basis outside of the U.S. on ESPN International. It is being produced again by Aura360, SCORE’s electronic media partner, in association with SCORE.
As a special incentive to help bolster entries for the relatively new Class 4, Langley Productions owner and SCORE racer John Langley has posted a Special winner-take-all $10,000 SCORE/COPS Racing/BFG Tires bonus for the first-place finisher in the class for unlimited open-wheel, single or two-seat desert race cars with either a limited 2.2 or 2.4-liter GMC Ecotec sealed engine. COPS Racing, named for the popular television series produced by Langley Productions, has three vehicles entered in this year’s race in three different classes.
Class 4, one of the newest SCORE race classes, was designed for competitors to be able to use the chassis of both the current SCORE Class 1 and Class 10 catagories, according to SCORE Tech Director Bill Savage. To be legal for Class 4, these cars must use either a stock, sealed GMC Ecotec 2.2-liter engine for a single-seater or a stock, sealed GMC Ecotec 2.4-liter engine for a two-seat race car.
Savage has also reported that the current Class 2 vehicles are legal to run in Class 4 for this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 and a shot at the added $10,000 SCORE/COPS Racing/BFG Tires bonus. Class 2 will be merged into Class 4 permanently starting in 2011. Complete regulations for Class 4 are on the SCORE website under Tech Notes.
This race also features the prestigious Sal Fish SCORE IronRider awards presented to each motorcycle or ATV rider who completes the course within the time limit while riding solo. To date, 11 individuals have declared that they will be attempting to complete the course riding solo.
In addition to season point class point championships, drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are also racing to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season.  Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 25th consecutive year, a total of 17 drivers remain eligible after Round 4 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series. The total mileage for the 2010 season will be 2,133.88 miles. Racers are also competing for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.
