Crowley Off-Road Racing Prepares for the 2011 King of the Hammers UTV Race

SHINGLE SPRINGS, CA   JANUARY 31, 2011  -  The Crowley Off-Road Racing Team will be driving the Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx in the Pit Bull Tires King of the Hammers UTV race Thursday February 10, 2011 at Johnson Valley, CA.  “We have competed in this race since its inception, and I am looking forward to another challenge.  Adding more rock obstacles to the desert course really makes it where we have to work at getting to the finish line,” said driver of record Jon Crowley who has finished every year.

After completing the 2010 VORRA race series in their Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx, the Crowley Off-Road Racing team went right to work preparing for the first big race of the 2011 season – King of the Hammers UTV race. First up on the agenda was to freshen up and upgrade the engine.
“Although our big bore Muzzys 840cc powerplant served us well last season with three first place finishes, we were excited about bumping that up a bit,” said owner Jon Crowley. “The Kawasaki Teryx v-twin has great potential to make big, reliable power, and Muzzys Performance Products is the place to make it happen.” For the 2011 season, most UTV race series have bumped the engine limit to 1000cc to allow the Can-Am Commander 1000, Polaris RZR XP 900, Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 and John Deere XUV 825i to compete.

After conferring with horsepower guru Rob Muzzy, Crowley decided to push it all the way to the maximum allowable – 999cc. The new engine features a beautiful set of Muzzys 916cc billet cylinders and a stroker crank.

“After the engine installation, I took our Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx down to Glamis for a shake-down run,” said Crowley. “I slapped a set of Fullerton Sand Sports paddle tires and smoothies on our OMF billet center wheels and hit the dunes. The additional power from the Muzzys 999cc was incredible. With the big horsepower, Funco long travel arms and Fox shocks, it felt more like a mini-buggy than a UTV. It was big fun, but also an important test for the upcoming King of the Hammers UTV race.”

In addition to the new engine, Crowley will once again be racing on 26.5” Pit Bull Rocker tires mounted on OMF beadlock wheels. But as an extra measure of safety, the team has brought on Tire Balls as a new sponsor. “The King of the Hammers UTV race is only 40 miles, but the terrain will torture the vehicle. In order to win, there is no time to stop and change a flat. With Tire Balls, we have a chance to keep running even with flat tire to a pit or the finish line.” The King of the Hammers UTV race will take place in Johnson Valley, CA on Thursday February 10th. Behind the Scenes Look at Polaris' new ProStar 900 Twin Engine

By Jon Crowley, www.UTVGuide.net

By now, you've probably seen lot's of pictures, a few videos and some first-hand reports on the new Polaris RZR XP. After experiencing it first-hand myself at the 2011 Polaris RZR XP Media Event, I can tell you that it lives up to the hype. The RZR XP is pretty much as Polaris states - "The ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility."

The heart of the Polaris RZR XP features a brand new engine, designed in-house at Polaris called the ProStar 900 Twin. The ProStar was specifically designed for the RZR XP. It is not just another bored out ATV engine with a different cam profile and CVT adjustments. The ProStar 900 puts out an industry-leading 88 horsepower with an RPM limited to 8250. When you couple the 88 HP with the RZR XP's 1190 pound dry weight, the result is a side x side that delivers 29% faster acceleration than the closest competitor.

Maximized Power
The Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) valve train features high flow ports, fewer moving parts, and less total mass, maximizing engine performance and durability. Massive dual 46mm throttle bodies feed the 875cc ProStar which delivers a dynamic 100 HP per Liter compared to just 85 HP per liter for the closest side x side competitor.

High Performance Engineering
The 180 degree crankshaft configuration allows for an efficiently balanced and powerful side x side engine. The counter motion of the pistons reduces the amount of rotating mass inertia that is counteracted with the balance shaft. This results in a smooth and lightweight design. The naturally balanced design of the 180 degree crank provides smooth high-revving power.

Lightweight Powertrain
The new compact transmission was specifically built for the RANGER RZR XP to optimize power from the new ProStar 900 EFI engine. Its high torque transports extreme power to the wheels with less driveline noise. A helical cut final drive with optimized gear geometry maximizes efficiency for more power to the ground.

Built for Extreme Conditions
The integrated oil cooling and engine coolant system optimizes performance and durability when riding in hot weather conditions.

ProStar 900 Twin Specifications:
  • 88 HP
  • Dual Overhead Cams
  • Four Valves per Cylinder
  • 875cc Displacement
  • 93mm Bore x 64.4mm Stroke
  • 10.5:1 Compression Ratio
  • 46mm Throttle Bodies
  • 1.875" exhaust header
  • 37.7mm intake valves
  • 32.4mm exhaust valves

Polaris Reports Record 2010 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Results

MINNEAPOLIS--Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:PII) today reported record net income of $1.55 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2010, up 18 percent over the 2009 fourth quarter. Net income for the fourth quarter 2010 was a record $54.5 million, an increase of 24 percent over the same period in 2009. Record sales of $618.4 million for the fourth quarter 2010 increased 31 percent over 2009 fourth quarter sales of $471.8 million.

Full Year Results
For the full year ended December 31, 2010, Polaris reported record net income of $147.1 million, or a record $4.28 per diluted share, compared to $101.0 million, or $3.05 per diluted share for the year ended December 31, 2009. This represents a 40 percent increase on a per diluted share basis and a 46 percent increase in net income. Sales for the full year 2010 totaled a record $1,991.1 million, an increase of 27 percent compared to sales of $1,565.9 million for the full year 2009.
“2010 was an exceptional year for Polaris. Not only did we deliver record sales and earnings, but the Polaris team made significant progress toward our long-term strategy and positioned the business for profitable growth in the future. We gained market share in all of our businesses and grew sales in every region of the world. Our persistent focus on margins paid dividends, as gross profit margins increased 150 basis points and net margins expanded by 90 basis points to 7.4 percent of sales. We also expanded our leadership position in the side-by-side industry, and grew sales and market share in our Victory motorcycles and snowmobile businesses,” stated Scott Wine, Chief Executive Officer. “In addition to our record financial performance, we made several strategic investments in the business during 2010 that position us for future growth, including investments in China, Brazil and India, and a small powertrain acquisition in Europe. Lastly, our manufacturing realignment project, announced in mid-2010, is on track to begin production in our new Monterrey facility by mid-2011.”
“Our efforts throughout 2010 have further positioned the Company for continued growth and profitability in 2011 and beyond. Importantly, dealer inventories for ORV and Victory continued to decline in 2010 and are at appropriate levels as we enter 2011. Additionally, we expanded the retail sales program called Max Velocity Program, or MVP, into the remaining 50 percent of our ORV dealers in North America during the second half of 2010. We expect MVP to continue to drive retail sales velocity and market share gains in 2011,” Wine continued.
“Ending 2010 with $394 million in cash and only $200 million in total debt, we have both the financial strength and flexibility to continue to make organic and acquisitive investments to support our long-term growth initiatives. We expect the investments made over the past two years, supported by continued product innovation, ever-increasing speed to market, productive lean manufacturing initiatives, and low-cost purchasing capabilities to continue to deliver net margin expansion in 2011, resulting in another record year of sales and earnings for the Company.”

2011 Business Outlook
Full year 2011 earnings are expected to be in the range of $4.65 to $4.85 per diluted share, which represents an increase of nine to 13 percent when compared to full year 2010 earnings. Net income for full year 2011 is expected to increase in the range of 14 to 20 percent over full year 2010. Sales for full year 2011 are expected to increase eight to 11 percent over full year 2010 sales, with sales increases projected in each product line and geographic region. The full year 2011 expectations include transition costs related to the manufacturing realignment in the range of $12.0 million to $14.0 million, with the majority of the costs impacting gross margins. Savings from the manufacturing realignment project are expected to begin in the second half of 2011 but will only partially offset project transition costs in 2011.

Off-road Vehicles (“ORV’) sales, which include sales of both ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) and RANGER™ side-by-side vehicles, increased 40 percent during the fourth quarter 2010 from the fourth quarter 2009. This increase reflects continued market share gains for both ATVs and side-by-side vehicles driven by industry leading product offerings and the success of the MVP retail go-to-market process. All North American ORV dealers are now utilizing the MVP order process as of the 2010 third quarter. North American dealer inventories of ATVs continued to decline, decreasing 33 percent from the 2009 fourth quarter and sequentially decreasing eight percent from the third quarter of 2010. Polaris’ North American ORV unit retail sales to consumers increased approximately 11 percent for the 2010 fourth quarter compared to a tougher 2009 fourth quarter comparable, with side-by-side vehicle retail sales increasing over 20 percent quarter over quarter and ATV retail sales about flat with the prior year. The Company’s newer products have been well received by consumers, including the new mid-sized RANGER side-by-side with increased power, a 4-person mid-sized RANGER Crew and the first RANGER with a diesel engine. The most recent example of the Company’s continued aggressive new product development is the introduction in January 2011 of the all-new high performance RANGER RZR XP 900 to Polaris’ recreational family of vehicles. The unique features of the RZR XP 900 include a new 88 horsepower electronic fuel injected twin cylinder engine and a new 3-link trailing arm independent rear suspension with 14-inches of travel. In addition, shipments to Bobcat of its differentiated utility vehicle continued to gain market share in the 2010 fourth quarter. Given the growth in the Company’s ORV business worldwide, Polaris has widened its market share leadership in off-road vehicles in both North America and Europe.

Snowmobile sales increased 28 percent during the 2010 fourth quarter compared to the prior year’s fourth quarter. The fourth quarter 2010 increase in sales reflects the impact of a shift in shipments of snowmobiles later in the year as the Company chose to ship its snowmobiles closer to expected consumer demand in the winter season compared to the same period last year. Polaris’ North American snowmobile retail sales to consumers increased over 40 percent for the 2010 fourth quarter compared to the 2009 fourth quarter primarily due to heavy amounts of early snowfall in many key riding areas in North America and the success of model year 2011 new product introductions. Sales of snowmobiles to customers outside of North America, principally the Scandinavian region, increased 43 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 compared to a year ago. North American dealer inventories of snowmobiles at December 2010 are 22 percent lower than a year ago. For the full year 2010, snowmobile sales increased five percent compared to the prior year.

Sales of On-road Vehicles, which primarily consists of Victory motorcycles, increased eight percent during the fourth quarter of 2010 when compared to the same period in 2009. Victory North American unit retail sales to consumers increased 15 percent during the 2010 fourth quarter when compared to a strong 2009 fourth quarter, resulting in continued market share gains and retail sales growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. The North American heavyweight cruiser and touring motorcycle industry remained weak during the 2010 fourth quarter. However, consumer demand remains strong for Victory’s new touring models, the Cross Country™ and Cross Roads™ and the Company recently introduced the Victory High-Ball, a custom cruiser aimed at the younger rider looking for a classic factory custom motorcycle. North American dealer inventory of Victory motorcycles declined 30 percent in the 2010 fourth quarter compared to 2009 fourth quarter levels.

Parts, Garments, and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased 12 percent during the fourth quarter 2010 compared to the same period last year primarily due to increased ORV, Victory motorcycle and international related PG&A sales.

Gross profit as a percentage of sales was 27.7 percent for the fourth quarter of 2010, an increase of 40 basis points from 27.3 percent for the fourth quarter of 2009. Gross profit dollars increased 33 percent to $171.5 million for the fourth quarter 2010 compared to $128.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2009. The increase in gross profit dollars and the 40 basis points increase in the gross profit margin percentage in the fourth quarter 2010 resulted primarily from higher volume, continued product cost reduction efforts and higher selling prices. These increases were partially offset by manufacturing realignment costs as well as higher commodity and sales promotion costs.

Operating expenses for the fourth quarter 2010 increased 53 percent to $97.6 million, or 15.8 percent of sales, compared to $63.9 million, or 13.6 percent of sales, for the fourth quarter of 2009. Operating expenses in absolute dollars and as a percentage of sales for the fourth quarter 2010 increased primarily due to an increase in incentive compensation plan expenses of $19 million over the 2009 fourth quarter period driven by the higher profitability for 2010 and the recent higher stock price which reflects the Company’s pay for performance compensation philosophy. In addition, incremental investments made in global market expansion and new product development initiatives contributed to the increase in operating expenses in the fourth quarter.

Income from financial services decreased 12 percent to $4.2 million during fourth quarter 2010 from $4.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2009. The decrease was primarily due to lower interest income earned by Polaris Acceptance as a result of the lower dealer inventory levels.

Interest expense decreased to $0.5 million for the fourth quarter 2010, from $0.9 million for the fourth quarter 2009, due to lower interest rates on the Company’s credit facility during the 2010 fourth quarter as compared to the same period in 2009.

Non-operating other income was $0.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2010, as compared to $2.7 million of expense in the fourth quarter of 2009. The income is the result of foreign currency exchange rate movements and the resulting effects on foreign currency transactions related to the Company’s foreign subsidiaries.
The Income tax provision for the fourth quarter 2010 was recorded at a rate of 30.4 percent of pretax income compared to 33.3 percent of pretax income for the fourth quarter 2009. The lower income tax provision rate in the fourth quarter 2010 is primarily due to the extension of the research and development credit by the U.S. Congress in the 2010 fourth quarter.

Financial Position and Cash Flow
Net cash provided by operating activities increased 54 percent to $297.6 million for the year ended December 31, 2010 compared to $193.2 million for the full year 2009. The increase in net cash provided by operating activities for the full year 2010 was due to higher net income and lower investment in working capital, primarily resulting from higher accrued expenses, compared to the same period in 2009. Total debt was $200.0 million, of which $100.0 million was classified as current liabilities and $100.0 million was classified as long term liabilities at December 31, 2010. The Company’s debt-to-total capital ratio was 35 percent at December 31, 2010, compared to 49 percent at the end of 2009. Cash and cash equivalents were $393.9 million at December 31, 2010 compared to $140.2 million for the prior period.

Manufacturing Realignment
The previously announced manufacturing realignment will consolidate manufacturing operations into existing operations in Roseau, Minnesota and Spirit Lake, Iowa and a new facility in Monterrey, Mexico. Construction is underway on the new facility in Monterrey and the building is expected to be completed in the first half of 2011. The Company expects to record pretax transition charges to its statement of income in the range of $24 million to $26 million and incur capital expenditures of approximately $35 million in total related to the implementation of the manufacturing realignment. The Company expects to realize pretax savings in excess of $30 million annually when the transition is completed. During 2010, $5.4 million of exit costs and $5.5 million of startup costs were incurred from the realignment, which are primarily reflected in cost of sales on the statement of income. In addition, capital expenditures of $8.6 million were incurred in 2010 related to the manufacturing realignment.

Polaris’ Board of Directors Increases Dividend for 2011
On January 20, 2011, the Company announced that its Board of Directors approved a 13 percent increase in the regular quarterly cash dividend, representing the 16th consecutive year of increased dividends, effective with the 2011 first quarter dividend payment. The first quarter dividend of $0.45 per share will be payable on February 15, 2011 to shareholders of record at the close of business on February 1, 2011.

Arctic Cat Reports Fiscal 2011 Third Quarter Results

Quarterly EPS $0.50 versus $0.14 in prior-year quarter on net sales growth of 16%;
Third quarter operating profit rose to $12.2 million from $0.6 million;
Company again raises FY11 annual earnings guidance

MINNEAPOLIS--Arctic Cat Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAT) today reported net earnings of $9.3 million, or $0.50 per diluted share, on net sales of $152.0 million for the fiscal 2011 third quarter ended December 31, 2010. Arctic Cat reported net earnings in the prior-year third quarter of $2.6 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, on net sales of $131.0 million.

For the nine months ended December 31, 2010, Arctic Cat’s net earnings were $22.6 million, or $1.22 per diluted share, on net sales of $391.2 million. In the first nine months of last fiscal year, the company reported net earnings of $11.4 million, or $0.63 per diluted share, on net sales of $366.7 million.
Commented Arctic Cat’s president and chief executive officer Claude Jordan: “We are very pleased with the company’s strong third-quarter and year-to-date performance. Our results were fueled by higher sales across all product lines, including double-digit gains in our snowmobile business. The combination of increased volume, product mix, product cost-reduction efforts, higher selling prices and a continued focus on efficiency led to another quarter of significantly improved gross margins and profitability.”

Among the highlights of Arctic Cat’s 2011 third quarter and year-to-date financial results versus the same periods last year:
  • Gross margins improved 430 basis points in the quarter and 370 basis points year to date;
  • Operating profit for the quarter rose to $12.2 million from $0.6 million, and year to date increased to $32.7 million from $13.9 million;
  • Factory inventory declined 27 percent to $77.2 million from $106.3 million;
  • Total cash and short-term investments rose to $107.1 million from $50.4 million; and
  • The company has no short- or long-term debt.
“We are excited by the traction and momentum we’ve achieved year to date,” said Jordan. “We continued to successfully execute against our objectives to reduce dealer and factory inventory, improve gross margins and keep operating expenses flat as a percent of sales.”

Business Line Results
Snowmobile sales grew 33 percent to $77.8 million in the third quarter compared to $58.7 million in the prior-year quarter, led by increases in both North American dealer sales and international sales to distributors. Year-to-date snowmobile sales increased 15 percent to $186.5 million versus $162.3 million in the same period last year, led by higher international sales to distributors.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) sales rose 1 percent to $48.6 million in the third quarter versus $48.2 million in the prior-year quarter, chiefly driven by sales of the company’s new Prowler HDX heavy duty utility vehicle. During the quarter, Arctic Cat announced the launch of three all-new 2011 ATV models: the full-featured, value-priced 350 4X4 automatic; the valued-priced 425 EFI 4X4 automatic; and the XC450i 4X4, a crossover model for consumers seeking four-wheel-drive capabilities in a sport ATV. Arctic Cat’s year-to-date ATV sales were up 1 percent to $133.0 million compared to $132.1 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2010.

Sales of parts, garments and accessories (PG&A) in the third quarter grew 6 percent to $25.6 million versus $24.2 million in the prior-year quarter, primarily driven by stronger garments sales including the new Drift garment line. Year-to-date PG&A sales totaled $71.7 million, down 1 percent from $72.3 million in the year-ago period.

Outlook
“We remain confident that the company is on track to deliver improved operating results, increased profitability and enhanced shareholder value again this fiscal year,” Jordan said.
Arctic Cat is focused on improving its profitability in a continued low-demand recreational vehicle market, which remains well below pre-recession industry sales levels. The company’s fiscal 2011 outlook includes the following assumptions: ATV industry retail sales declining approximately 15 to 20 percent; snowmobile industry retail sales increasing 5 to 10 percent; Arctic Cat dealer inventories declining 20 to 30 percent; improving gross margins between 200 to 300 basis points; achieving flat to slightly down operating expense levels as a percent of sales; increasing cash flow from operations; and ending the year with more cash on the balance sheet.

Based on its year-to-date results and expectations of future performance, Arctic Cat is raising and narrowing its estimated full-year earnings for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. The company now anticipates that fiscal 2011 earnings will be in the range of $0.57 to $0.65 per diluted share, driven by increased international revenue, as well as higher gross margins resulting from higher volume, product mix and cost reduction efforts. The company’s previous guidance anticipated fiscal 2011 earnings of $0.40 to $0.55 per diluted share. The company continues to estimate fiscal 2011 net sales of $453 million to $463 million.

Honolulu Hills WORCS Race Report from Yokley Racing

Taft, California, January 22-23, 2011 - National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished 9th overall in the Pro ATV class today in Round 1 of the 2011 WORSC Series. National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished 3rd in the Side by Side Class 1 UTV class. National Guard Polaris Coastal Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finished 4th in the same class.

Summary
Yokley Racing traveled to the west coast for Round 1 of the 2011 WORCS series in Taft, CA. The team unveiled its new hauler and race machines for 2011. The all new 2011 Polaris RZR XP 900 was being raced for the first time. With a short time period for preparation, the RZR used very few specialty parts, and the motor, transmission and clutches were stock. This is the only side by side machine available that you can race competitively in basically stock configuration in the top level classes. Polaris hit another “Home Run” on this new model!

The 45 minute UTV race started out great for the Yokley Racing team, running 1st and 2nd at the start. Scott Kiger led the 1st lap with Yokley close behind. Yokley had Dirt Wheels Magazine editor Brad Howe as his passenger. Yokley was running maybe a little too close, as his radiator got clogged by the roost off the RZR. The overheating forced him to the pit area where the crew cleaned the dirt from the radiator. Meanwhile, Kiger landed off of a big jump with full power on, and snapped a rear axle, eventually ending his day early. William was able to finish the race at a reduced pace. Both team drivers were very optimistic about the season, as the Polaris was working great before the set backs. The team will correct the early problems, and be ready for Round 2 on Feb. 26 in Primm, NV.
The National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV had good day for the first race of the season. Team rider Jarrod McClure had been training in Florida over the winter, and experienced a wrist injury recently, so expectations were to race and finish without further injury. He qualified 10th and when the 90 minute race began, he was mid-pack. Several turns into the race, a rider in front of him spun out; Jarrod had no way to avoid him and slammed into him. He got his tire locked into the other rider’s nerf bar, and they could not get unhooked. Eventually, after all the other riders passed them, they finally got going. The course was very fast with many high speed straights, and rough, square edged bumps. Parts of the course were hard packed and slick, while the motorcross sections were tacky. Jarrod worked his way up to 9th at the finish, and was pleased with the finish under the circumstances. The wide open west coast terrain and set up is different than the more technical east coast where he had been training, so with today’s experience, he will be better prepared for Round 2.

His teammate, Jeremie Warnia also took the Pro-class victory on his Can-Am DS 450 ATV completing
weekend sweep of the premier classes by Motoworks / Can-Am.

Warnia looked extremely fast in practice and backed it up by passing for the lead on the first lap of the Pro ATV race on his DS 450 and fought off the competition. His teammate and defending champion, Josh Frederick, took third in the Pro class on his DS 450.
"With the Class 1 victory and two spots on the Pro ATV podium, it was an exciting weekend in the pits," commented Johnny Leach, Motoworks / Can-Am team owner. "There is always more work to be done and the success of the team makes us even hungrier for more wins."

Curtis Introduces Rapid Convertible System for Kawasaki Teryx

Cab provides maximum flexibility in all weather conditions

Worcester, Massachusetts — Curtis Industries, LLC has introduced a modular cab system for the Kawasaki Teryx utility vehicle that allows rapid transformation from a fully enclosed cab to an open-air ride in 60 seconds. The Curtis Rapid Convertible System (RCS) allows the user to choose one or all components for maximum flexibility as the weather changes.

A simple ROPS base frame with cab receiver mounts provides safety and easy installation of the modular components. The roof, windshield and rear panel feature a unique, easy on, no-tools, pin to slot connection and a heavy duty quick release latch. The strong but lightweight hard-coated polycarbonate windshield quickly vents for varying temperatures and is designed and tested for full speed travel with the windshield open or closed. An optional wiper kit is also available.

Cab panels are designed using advanced technology and materials. The Rapid-Convertible System uses thermoformed TPO material (not ABS plastic or fiberglass) for all body panels. TPO offers superior low-temperature impact resistance, higher heat-deflection and greater dimensional stability than ABS or fiberglass. Side doors quickly convert to half doors – no tools required – providing greater safety and protection than with an open cockpit.

Available in black, cab components – base frame, roof, windshield, doors, and rear panel – can be purchased separately or as a complete cab.

Curtis Industries, LLC is the leading manufacturer of cabs, enclosures and accessories for compact tractors, golf cars, and utility vehicles. The company, which started in 1968, also manufactures truck plows and snow and ice control equipment for tractors and utility vehicles. Curtis Industries, LLC markets its products exclusively through a large network of dealers in the United States and Canada as well as Japan, Korea and Western Europe. Discovery SX-800 UTV Team Race Results

by Todd Eldridge

My mechanic and I raced in Durhamtown, GA in the 4 Hour UTV day/night race. We raced as a team, with him driving his stock Teryx (outfitted with MSD, Muzzy and clutch kit with overdrive plate) and me driving the bone stock Discovery SX-800 (with just a front pair of Elka Stage One shocks up front).? According to the rules we were considered modified, our competition was the following Team #1 Can-Am Commander 1000X and a Standard RZR, Team #2 was a pair of turbo charged RZR S's. The track was a 10 mile loop, we made 10 laps in the four hours for 100 miles of racing.  The winner was the team with most laps in four hours, we all had the same number of laps. We came in third in this group with a overall time that was just 12 minutes total time behind the leader so we were losing just 7 seconds per mile to the leaders. Both our vehicles had the speed and power but lacked the suspension those vehicle did. We never had any trouble keeping up with them when there was smoother trails but this course was really rough and suspension played a huge role in it. The power and clutching seemed to be right on!!  Handling on the flatter parts of the track and around curves were very well controlled, better than my race Rhino 700.  As soon as we get a better suspension under it, it will beat the pants off a RZR and maybe a RZR S for power and handling the rough stuff!!  After I grinded down the welds where the tie rods were hitting the A-arm the steering radius got much better. I can't find any more things wrong with this vehicle than any other.  The quality of workmanship seemed to be on par with the big name companies and so does the fit and finish.  Does it need improvement?  Sure but so do all of the other brands. The main thing is, the Discovery had zero issues.
Funny thing happened though was I took off for my second round of laps and noticed I was immediately down on power.  It was actually enough for the rough terrain but down nonetheless.  I was trying to figure it out and about mile six or so on the lap, I remembered I pushed my gloves behind the seat and that is where the intake is.  I reached behind me and pulled the gloves from the intake and that baby took off!! Top speed on the SX-800 I have is 75 according to the dash but I have not checked it via GPS yet.
For just a little more money we can widen this vehicle on the A-arms, change the shock angles a bit and then have a lower cost option to a Polaris RZR.  With a little more suspension there would be no reason not be as competitive as other vehicle that was there.  I would also change the tire choice; the Wanda swamplite copies are too big and aggressive for a sport style UTV and hurt performance.
Michael (mechanic) and I have lots of ideas on how to improve the vehicle that will not cost much if any money on manufacturing cost and make it better to compete against the vehicle it was meant to compete against, the Polaris RZR.
Other than my hurting back from getting beat up from the ride I am very proud to be the very first person to ever race a Discovery SX-800 in a cross country race.
The vehicle got lots of on-lookers and lots of questions!

Turner Racing Gets Big Air at the Soboba GP

Never a team that takes breather, the Turner Racing team stayed on the gas after the BITD Parker 250 and quickly prepped the SR-1-powered Rhino for the Soboba Grand Prix. This race, put on by the Soboba Casino just outside of Hemet, California, drew racers from all over the Southwest for one reason: a total purse of $20,000! In addition to the GP, the Casino and Daystar also hosted a long-jump competition the evening before the race. Turner Racing was determined to get their fair share of the prize money and make a big splash in both events.

Despite a broken shock that put the team out of contention at the Parker 250, the SR-1 Rhino emerged from the desert race in surprisingly good shape. After thoroughly going over the car and fixing the mangled shock, the team made a number of changes to the car's setup in order for it to better handle the extremely tight and twisty 6 mile loop of the Soboba Grand Prix. This race is set up differently from most others; instead of a set number of laps, the Grand Prix format at Soboba determines the winner by the person who completes the greatest number of laps in two hours. The course was a grueling combination of hillclimbs, drops, narrow canyons, and water crossings. Because it was so twisty, horsepower is not really a factor in the race and a stone stock UTV with the right suspension and driver stands just as good a chance of winning as a highly modified UTV. Horsepower plays a huge role, however, in the event's land-rush start, where all of the competitors start side by side and charge for the first corner.

In addition to the GP, there was also the long jump competition. Sponsored by UTV Underground and Daystar, the long jump put a $1,000 bounty on the farthest jump, with another $1,000 kicked in by Daystar. Each competitor had three attempts to get big air. Held the night before the race, there was sure to be some action and Turner Racing did not disappoint.

After pre-running the GP course, it was found that the team had overshot the fix for the overly soft rear suspension on the SR-1 Rhino; instead of it being too soft, now it was too stiff. After making several more adjustments to the car, the team prepped for the long jump. It quickly became apparent that there were two competitors determined to go big: Tyler Winbury, and Mark Turner. Turner was last to jump and his first jump put him in the lead with a very impressive 88 feet, which was the new world record. On the next series of jumps Winbury delivered a nearly identical jump of 90 feet 8 inches. Determined to secure the world record, Turner held nothing back on his second attempt and launched off the jump at an estimated 80 mph. The UTV landed a record-shattering 91 feet away! Unfortunately, it also landed extremely nose-down, so much so that the front bumper dug in and sent the car into multiple endos and cartwheels. After rolling 7 times, the car came to rest on its wheels as the crowd continued to gasp after witnessing the horrific crash. The Turner Racing crew was at the car seconds after it stopped to see if Turner was OK. Amazingly, Turner was out of the car within seconds and climbed on the roof of the battered Rhino and waved at the crowd!

Other than a couple of bruises, Turner walked away completely unscathed. The Rhino was not so fortunate. While the main cage structure remained intact, the front and rear suspension were almost completely torn off the frame. There was no way the SR-1 could be fixed in time for the GP. Fortunately, the Turner Racing Unlimited Rhino, fresh from engine builder Benchmark Performance, had been picked up the day before. The crew turned its efforts to prepping the second car, which hadn't been raced or even test-driven other than to tune the engine for the past several months.

On race day, Turner took his place among 41 other competitors for the land-rush start of the GP. Right after the green flag dropped, there was an enormous traffic snarl and Turner found himself right in the middle of it. Once it had cleared, Turner found himself in a disappointing 39th place. Determined as ever, Turner fought his way through the pack and had moved all the way up to 14th place by the last lap and was rapidly gaining on the leaders despite losing power steering shortly after the start of the race. Just when he needed a break, however, the engine began sputtering and blowing white smoke out of the exhaust just five miles from the end, indicating a blown head gasket. Turner ended up limping the car across the finish line in 17th place. It was not the podium finish he was hoping for, but the team was glad to get another finish under their belts.

The Soboba GP was certainly an eventful weekend for the Turner Racing team, and that's what racing is all about! The crew has already gone to work on the Unlimited Rhino in preparation for the King of the Hammers on February 10th, a grueling race that's sure to deliver plenty of action. As always, stay tuned!
