Buffalo Bills WORCS ATV & UTV Race Report

Primm, Nevada, February 26-27, 2011 - National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished 8th overall in the Pro ATV class today in Round 2 of the 2011 WORSC Series. National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished 3rd in the Side by Side Class 1 UTV class, and National Guard Polaris Coastal Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finished 7th in the same class after experiencing mechanical problems.

Summary

The National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing team made the trip to Primm, Nevada for Round 2 of the 2011 WORCS series. Cold weather, high winds and snow greeted the team at the Buffalo Bills race course located 35 miles south of Las Vegas. The UTV race was run partly on the short Trophy Truck course with many jumps and turns, and partly in the desert with lots of sand whoops and high speed areas.

The 45 minute UTV race started out very good for the National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing team, running 3rd and 4th through lap 3 of the 4 lap race. Scott Kiger was comfortably running right with the top 2 UTVs, and was planning to kick the pace up on the final lap. On lap 4 Kiger’s drive belt failed and he was forced out of the race, finishing in 7th position. This was much unexpected, as drive belts are virtually unbreakable. Yokley inherited 3rd position and finished the race there. William Yokley was accompanied by guest passenger David “Bird” Phillips, who does much of the machine work for Doug Roll at Roll Design. The new Polaris RZRs performed well today, and Yokley is now leading the season points. The UTV Team now looks forward to the opening round of the GNCC UTV Series in Aonia Pass, Georgia on March 12.

The National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV was looking to improve on the results from Round 1. Team rider Jarrod McClure’s wrist injury had improved, and he had been training and riding in California. Jarrod got a great start in this 90 minute race, and was running in 2nd position for the first few turns. He ran in the top five for next 3 laps. When he came in for a fuel stop, his bike was running rough and seemed down on power. The crew checked the air filter and found that it was clogged with dirt and sand. They made a quick change, but he had lost time and was much farther back in the pack. Jarrod rode well and worked his way back up to 8th place at the finish. He was pumped that he was able to run with the top guys today, and now sits in 8th place in the season points. Jarrod’s next ATV race is Round 1 of the GNCC ATV Series in River Ranch Florida on March 6.

New MIC sister organization focuses on off-road access and safety, accepts donations

A new Motorcycle Industry Council sister organization, the Right Rider Access Fund, has the mission of promoting the safe and responsible use of off-highway vehicles, and preserving riders’ access to appropriate lands, by directly supporting riders and by supplementing the work of the MIC and two of its other sister organizations: the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association.
The Right Rider Access Fund is a 501(c)(3) charitable community benefit organization supported in part by the MIC, SVIA and ROHVA, which will provide partial funding and administrative resources for the organization. The industry associations’ professional staff will execute the fund’s mission. The fund also relies on contributions from individuals and businesses.
According to the fund, there are an estimated 14 million off-highway motorcycles, ATVs and recreational off-highway vehicles (i.e., side-by-sides) in use. “Enthusiasts need and deserve more help to ensure they can safely and responsibly operate their OHVs and access riding areas,” the fund’s president, Tim Buche, says in a press release. “By combining the existing support of the powersports industry associations with contributions from businesses and individuals, the financial resources available to support OHV enthusiasts will increase exponentially. Equally important, with industry expertise available to manage the work of the fund on a charitable basis, 100 percent of contributions go to benefit off-highway enthusiasts — none is lost to cover overhead, personnel expenses or fund-raising activities.”
The fund initially will support OHV riders through three programs:

  • The Safety, Education and Training Support Program will provide funding or other resources for safety, education and training initiatives.
  • The OHV Organization Support Program will provide funding or other resources to national, state and local OHV rider organizations for projects designed to promote OHV recreation and expand OHV riding opportunities. For example, major funding for National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) will be granted through the fund.
  • The Access Preservation Support Program will coordinate, manage and administer specific rider-funded, legal action to lessen the burdens of government in connection with their access to public lands.
“By contributing to the fund you will be supporting a variety of educational and training programs designed by off-highway vehicle professionals,” Buche says. “You’ll also help ensure that riding areas are not arbitrarily designated as off-limits to off-highway recreationists and encourage respect for the environment. Contributors can designate their donation to any or all of the three programs.”
To donate to the fund as individuals, MIC, SVIA, and ROHVA employees opted to participate in a payroll deduction program. The first contributions were donated last week.
For more information about the Right Rider Access Fund and how to contribute, review the frequently asked questions at www.riderfund.org/faq.

Seizmik introduces new innovative UTV side view mirror

February 24, 2011, Seizmik has released a new side view mirror to complement its already best selling mirror selection. Seizmik found it necessary to completely redesign the mirror to accommodate the rough terrain, the hard hits that mirrors take from stray limbs and rocks, and the small cab area that puts the rider extremely close to the mirror. Ben Greene, marketing coordinator for Seizmik says, “We found a lot of consumers were frustrated with the lack of high quality mirrors on the market and set out to solve the problems that are unique to a UTV rider.” The 3 major innovations Seizmik developed into the mirror are its breakaway feature that allows the mirror to fold back onto itself so it can absorb a hit and not shatter, a way to easily tighten the mirror for traveling on rough terrain and a large, convex mirror surface that allows a rider to have a large viewing area even though the tight cabs in UTVs position the riders very close to the mirrors.

The design of every part of the mirror was taken into consideration when Seizmik was searching for solutions to UTV rider’s problems. The high impact plastic housing integrates struts to strengthen the housing and to absorb hits to cushion the impact on the mirror surface. The mirror surface is made from shatter resistant tempered glass to ensure the riders safety from flying glass. The steel clamp wraps around the roll cage to provide the mirror with a sturdy foundation to ensure the mirror is held tightly into place. The ball joint allows the mirror to be adjusted vertically and horizontally to accommodate any rider. This combination of features is designed to withstand the hard beatings that UTV’s are put through while enhancing UTV rider’s experience.

The mirror will fit across many different models of UTV’s, including all Polaris Ranger, Polaris RZR, John Deere Gator, Bobcat UTV’s, Yamaha Rhino, Kymco UXV, Kawasaki Mule 610 series and Kawasaki Mule 3000 Series. The mirror will also fit any 1 ¾” bar and any flat surface.
Seizmik is a leader in developing innovative accessories for UTV’s. Seizmik is owned by Vialink Group, a product development and international sourcing firm. Seizmik has a full range of UTV accessories with emphasis in soft tops, windshields, hood racks, mirrors and light bars. Check out all their products at www.seizmik.com. ATVRiders.com's Kawasaki Teryx Project

Lonestar Racing +5
Long Travel Kawasaki Teryx
Our friends over at ATVRiders.com have a nice Kawasaki Teryx project underway and had it in the Lonestar Racing booth at the recent Dealer Expo in Indianapolis.

The Teryx features Lonestar Racing's +5" XTR-F Long Travel Suspension. The bolt-on kit is 5" wider per side and has a 1" rear placement for optimum performance. The kit is designed to have 15.5" of front suspension travel and 15.5" of rear suspension travel using special Fox Racing Shox long travel shocks.

It comes with front and rear shock towers for perfect geometry and is specifically for the new
Fox Racing Shox 2.0 Position Sensitive Shocks with DSC. It uses a dual rate 8.5" travel shock up front, and a dual rate 10" shock in the rear for the best performance possible for your Teryx. The new shocks provide extra resistance against bottoming out, and still provide a nice smooth and controlled ride. The Fox shocks come with dual rate springs, piggy back reservoirs, and with high and low speed compression adjustment.

We will be using the same suspension on our 2011 Kawasaki Teryx build and can't wait to get everything installed.

Be sure to check out ATVRiders.com for updates on their Teryx project as well. Harlen has a great photo gallery from the Dealer Expo that is worth checking out too.

From short courses to desert, expect to see the Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV team in full force and in serious contention for championships. The diverse team, hand-picked by Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green™ manager Reid Nordin, has been assembled to decimate the competition racing the 2011 Kawasaki Teryx® RUV. This year’s team includes a list of proven racers who know what it takes to win championships, including Chad George, Mike Lasher, Bobby Van Beekum, Jon Crowley, Casey Currie, and Brian Bennett.

“This year we have expanded the Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV team,” said Nordin. “We have selected a great group of proven racers from a diverse field to compete in several different off-road series and events. Pairing skilled drivers with the Kawasaki Teryx RUV’s powerful V-twin engine and proven power-train is a winning combination.”

Returning for his fourth year on the Funco Monster Energy Kawasaki team, Chad George is no stranger to winning. This season George will be focusing his talent in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series. With four LOORRS championships already under his belt, expect this veteran to be tracking down more trophies in his Kawasaki Teryx. With its V-twin power-plant at his command, George has proven to be one of the fiercest competitors in the series.
Chad George
While he is officially the new kid on the Muzzys Monster Energy Kawasaki team, Bobby Van Beekum, is no rookie to off-road racing. Finishing third in the overall points in last years LOORRS series, Van Beekum knows how to find the podium. Building momentum from several wins last season, expect Van Beekum to give every racer in the LOORRS series a run for their money.
Bobby VanBeekum
Veteran UTV racer Mike Lasher will also continue to represent Lasher Motorsports Monster Energy Kawasaki this season. Lasher finished second in the Best in the Desert overall points in 2009 and is looking to take one more step up the podium in 2011 to claim the championship title. In addition to his run for the BITD championship, Lasher will also be racing in the Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts racing series.
Mike Lasher
Coming back for a second year representing the Monster Energy Kawasaki off-road race team is resident Traxxas TORC Pro Light champion, Casey Currie. When he is not blasting through checkered flags in his Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Light truck, Currie will be piloting his Kawasaki Teryx in several select race events throughout the year.
Casey Currie
Representing Crowley Offroad Monster Energy Kawasaki for another season, Jon Crowley is looking to come out on top in both the Valley Off-Road Racing Association series and Hammerking Productions events this season. Having raced in the King of the Hammers since its inception, Crowley knows what it takes to win and has put together a bulletproof team to help him get there.
Jon Crowley
Known for his ability to customize a Kawasaki Teryx for just about anyone anywhere, Brian Bennett is renowned for his engineering prowess. Leading the Long Travel Industries Monster Energy Kawasaki race team, he also plans on showing the competition his skills extend beyond the fabrication shop. Racing in any of his beautifully customized Kawasaki Teryx machines never fails to draw a crowd of envious onlookers.

For the 2011 race season, the Monster Energy Kawasaki UTV race team will be infiltrating several off-road race series. Look for our racers at the LOORS, BITD, Hammerking Productions events, SNORE, VORRA, ASCC, and several other high profile off-road race events. Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green will be on hand at several UTV events in 2011 to offer technical assistance and emergency parts to support Kawasaki Teryx owners.

Secretary Salazar, Director Abbey Visit Imperial Sand Dunes, Participate in Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation

El CENTRO, Calif. -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey today visited the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area and rode off-highway vehicles (OHV) in the California Desert to underscore President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors, an initiative to promote and support partnerships with local communities to conserve open spaces and reconnect Americans to the outdoors.
“The Imperial Sand Dunes are a prime example of how partnerships can create world-class recreation opportunities, reinvigorate our approach to conservation and reconnect Americans, especially our young people, with the nation’s recreation lands and waters,” Secretary Salazar said. “Thanks to folks like the American Sand Association, United Desert Gateway and a host of others, more than a million people flock to this unique desert landscape each year to enjoy responsible, family-based off-highway vehicle recreation, stunning scenery and wilderness solitude. Their visits infuse millions of dollars into the local economy and ensure a great family tradition for generations to come.”
“Covering 160,000 acres, the Dunes is a unique place that not only offers family recreation but also preserves wilderness and provides a home to rare desert plants and wildlife,” said BLM Director Abbey. “This magnificent dune system demonstrates how, in partnership with local communities, we can protect the health, heritage, resources, and social and economic value of our nation’s lands.”
Secretary Salazar rode in a sand rail up one of the more challenging dunes and visited with three generations of off-highway vehicle enthusiasts as part of a tour highlighting President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative. Accompanied by Director Abbey, BLM’s El Centro Field Manager Margaret Goodro and Dunes Manager Neil Hamada, the Secretary visited the OHV Safety Training operated by American Desert Foundation to meet some of the younger visitors and discuss the importance of safety measures.
The Secretary also talked with representatives of Imperial County staff to discuss the economic benefits and the commercial importance of the Dunes to surrounding communities. The Secretary ended the day at a campground where he met with families, some of whom have been visiting the dunes for generations.
Following President Obama’s Feb. 16 report and memorandum establishing the America’s Great Outdoors initiative, Secretary Salazar has been visiting with communities around the country to highlight the importance of working with the American people to develop a conservation and recreation agenda that makes sense for the 21st century.
Recognizing that many public and private lands and resources are under intense pressure, the President’s report outlines ways in which the Federal Government will help empower local communities to accomplish their conservation and recreation priorities. These include:
  • Accessible parks or green spaces for our children.
  • A new generation of great urban parks and community green spaces.
  • Newly-restored river restorations and recreational “blueways” that power economic revitalization in communities.
  • Stronger support for farmers, ranchers, and private landowners that help protect rural landscapes and provide access for recreation.
  • The reinvestment of revenues from oil and gas extraction into the permanent protection of parks, open spaces, wildlife habitat, and access for recreational activities.
  • A 21st century conservation ethic that builds on local ideas and solutions for environmental stewardship and connecting to our historic, cultural, and natural heritage.

Royal Purple Teams with Crowley Offroad for the 2011 Season

Crowley Offroad is proud to announce that we have teamed up with Royal Purple for the 2011 race season. Royal Purple joined the team in late January as final preparations to the Muzzys 999cc Kawasaki Teryx were being made to prepare for the 2011 King of the Hammers UTV Race. When Jon Crowley asked engine builder and horsepower guru Rob Muzzy for a recommendation on what oil to use, Rob's response was "Royal Purple."

Muzzys has used Royal Purple for years in their road race and drag race motorcycles with great success. "We always see good performance gains as well as minimum wear," said Rob Muzzy. "When our race program for the Kawasaki Teryx kicked into gear, the decision to use Royal Purple was an easy one to make."

Royal Purple provided the following lubricants for the Crowley Off-Road Kawasaki Teryx: full synthetic racing oil - XPR 5w30 and 10w40 and Purple Ice radiator coolant. The use of Royal Purple synthetic oil in the 999cc v-twin Teryx eliminated any concerns of thermal viscous breakdown during the extended and demanding conditions found in the desert this summer.

"Our new Muzzy's built 999cc v-twin puts down some serious power,” said driver Jon Crowley. "The last thing I want to do is skimp on the life-blood of the engine."

Weller Racing Starts the 2011 Season on the Podium

Chandler, AZ (2/21/2011) With only a short break occurring since last season’s final LOORRS race at Firebird Raceway, Weller Racing has already started the new race season off on the right foot with a solid win at the first round of the ASCC Series (a Lucas Oil Regional event) held at Speedworld in Surprise, AZ.

Jason Weller simply dominated the UTV field in the Weller Racing/Tilted Kilt/Lucas Oil SR1, showing the cheering crowd that Corry Weller (Jason’s wife) isn’t the only fast driver in the family.
Easily winning the heat race as well as the main event, Weller proved that the four-year-old race chassis still had plenty of win left in it, and that the Weller Racing SR1 would be a competitive force to reckon with in the approaching Lucas Oil Off Road Race Series.

“The first few times I have driven Corry’s car, I was a little intimidated by it,” said Jason, when asked about his race. “But now I’m so much more comfortable in it, and I am figuring out what it can really do.  I just went out and had a great time!”

While Jason was out on the track, Corry was learning the ropes in the spotter’s tower, as she would take on her husband’s usual role for this round, as well as for future races throughout the 2011 ASCC season. “I have to really focus on paying attention to what Jason needs to know while he’s out there,” Corry said, when talking about her new responsibility.  “I find myself getting all wrapped up in the race and sometimes forget to let him know when someone is next to him, or when they throw a flag.  I think I need more practice!”

When asked how the change was going, Jason answered “It actually helps a lot for me to be out on the track and racing Corry’s car.  Before, I relied solely on her feedback when it came to any setup issues or problems; but now, I am actually out there experiencing the same things she is, and I will be able to set up the car even better now for her LOORRS races this year.”

Round 2 of the ASCC/Lucas Oil Regional Series will be held at Firebird Raceway on Sunday, March 6.  For 2011, the series is looking forward to increased entries, fan support and television coverage to be aired on MavTv, beginning later in the season.

About Weller Racing, LLC:
Weller Racing has been at the forefront of development, testing and building some of the fastest performance motors in the UTV industry since 2006.  Based out of Chandler, AZ, Weller Racing provides custom UTV and ATV products for a world wide client base, and is an established name in the world of short course off-road racing.  Duners, recreational riders and racers alike have counted on Weller Racing to provide them with countless hours of fun, and repeated trips to the podium.  For more information, visit their website at www.wellerracing.com, or call 480-507-4771.

Team Jean XMF Polaris Razor Takes Adelanto GP

Adelanto, CA – February 13, 2011 - With the VORRA Offroad season starting in March we decided to run the Adelanto GP to shake out any bugs in our new XMF roll cage and the adjustments made to our short course UTV over the winter.

The GP has a 70 minute plus UTV race run on a hybrid desert/motocross track 4 mile long course. There were two classes in the race, one class for UTV’s over 850cc, which had one entry, and one class for UTV’s under 849cc, which had 12 UTV’s entered. We were using our short course Polaris Razor UTV with the XMF +6 suspension, Walker Evans shocks, Hiper wheels and ITP tires.

There was no pre-running allowed so as we lined up for the start we could only hope we had set our suspension up correctly for the hybrid course. Off the start we led the short sprint to a left hand turn followed by another left, then a right, three table tops and then off into the desert portion. The desert portion of the course was extremely rough from 2 days of motorcycle and ATV races and had short straights aways and tight turns. After approximately 3 miles we re-entered the motocross track with a typical layout of doubles and tight turns which took us back to the start line. Luckily we had hit the right set up and after the first lap had opened up a 1 minute plus lead over the 2nd place UTV of Sean Cook. We attempted to catch the 850cc plus UTV of Thomas Ward but we were not able to quite catch him and back off and to a 7 minute win over 2nd place in the under 849cc class.

Thank you to our sponsors: XMF (+6 suspension & roll cage), Walker Evans shocks, Sapa Extrusions, Cal Custom Trailers & Power Sports, MUZZY Exhaust and Hiper Technology carbon fiber racing wheels.

Final finishing order of the races was:

850CC +
Thomas Ward – Bakersfield, CA – Polaris Razor

849CC -
Dennis Jean – Fairfield, CA – Polaris Razor
Sotero Ramos – La Verne, CA – Polaris Razor
Larry Carraher – Apple Valley, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Josh Staggs – Victorville, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Pat Kuykendall – Costa Mesa, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Marco Del Toro – Los Angeles, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Jason Miller – Helendale, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Sean Cook – Escalon, CA – Polaris Razor
Brandon Altmann – Herperia, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Jeremiah Staggs – Hesperia, CA – Yamaha Rhino
Rick Leard – Merced, CA – Polaris Razor

STI ROLLS OUT ALL-NEW HD1 SLIK-KOTE WHEEL

STI Tire & Wheel is bringing a new level of innovation to the ATV/UTV aftermarket with the launch of the HD1 wheel. What sets this model apart is its unique non-stick, Slik-Kote finish, which sheds mud like no wheel before. This high-tech, rugged, deep gray finish reduces mud and debris buildup and resulting unsprung weight, which can compromise the machine’s power, handling and ride. It also makes post-ride cleanup exceptionally easy.

The HD1 wheel’s heavy-duty construction adds to its innovation. This advanced one-piece alloy wheel features both inner and outer wheel lip reinforcement. Most wheels in this class use only outer lip reinforcement. Like STI’s other HD Series wheels, the HD1 carries a lifetime structural warranty.

The STI HD1 debuts in 12x7 and 14x7 sizes, to fit most popular utility/4x4 ATVs and side-by-side UTVs. A special, matching HD logo wheel cap is included with every wheel. The 12x7 has an impressive 700-pound load rating, while the 14x7 size provides an 800-pound load rating.
Despite its cutting edge features, the STI HD1 is surprisingly affordable, making it a top choice for anyone who prefers to do their motoring in the muck.

STI HD1 Slik-Kote wheels are available at finer ATV/UTV dealers everywhere, through MTA Distributing. For more information, to place an order or to locate an STI dealer, visit www.mtadistributing.com or call: East (318) 255-0049; West (951) 272-0971.

Rotax Your Rhino places third at 2011 PitBull Tires King of the Hammers UTV Race

The 2010 Whiplash Racing Pro-Mod champions Brian Bush of Rotax Your Rhino, and co-driver Greg Frantz of Lonestar Racing, take home a third place finish in their first running of the King Of The Hammers!
In 2010, Brian decided that he, and Lonestar Racing had molded his 2006 Yamaha Rhino into a machine that could not only finish what has been described as the toughest off-road race in the world, but he believed he could race with the leaders (the who’s who of UTV racing), and finish in the front of the pack. Unfortunately, he runs a Rotax V-twin engine, and was ineligible due to the fact that this particular engine was never offered in a UTV from the factory.
July 1, 2010, Can-Am released the all new Can-Am Commander which comes stock with the same popular engine that Brian, and many others currently run in their outdated Yamaha Rhino’s. Brian’s first reaction to this news was that he would be in contention to enter the 2011 running of the King of the Hammers!
The team ran the Whiplash Offroad Racing Series in 2010, and did surprisingly well for their first entry into an entire race series. The Pro-Mod championship was theirs for the taking. The car that Brian built only had 1 part failure during the whole series, causing their only DNF for the season. (Wheel studs)
When it came time to prepare for KOH, there wasn’t too much to do to the car. Brian installed a set of 3/8” UHMW skid plates from Factory UTV, a Quickshot spare tire and jack mount from Pro-Armor, a set of Pitbull Rocker 26.5” tires, a second battery and bracket from Rhino Parts and Performance, and a hand-me-down winch from his friends at Freedom RV in Tucson.
The two didn’t have time to get to Hammer Town early enough to pre-run the race course. Because of this they were quite nervous and spent most of the night before the race worrying, and reading race course maps and strategizing the run. “I must say that the course markers were clear and well laid out. Thanks to Reid Nordin for the time he invested in this”
The morning of the race was a frigid one. Some were reporting temperatures under 30 degrees. Brian and Greg made their way to the starting line and were placed in 16th position out of 18. Once they were rolling, and nerves were settling, Brian began to get a feel for his taller ride height, larger tires, and no sway bar. By the first technical section they had passed two or three cars and were making their way over the first obstacle when they encountered stopped race traffic and a race car blocking the course. At this point Greg exited the vehicle to assist the stuck racer. During this time, Brian shifted the car into reverse and immediately felt the shifter linkage break. With some quick thinking, he was able to remove a portion of the engine cover and discovered he could shift the transmission by reaching into the engine compartment. By the time Greg was back to the car, at least five minutes had passed and the stuck race car was still blocking the course. Greg scouted an alternate route down and around the stopped traffic. Once the team made it down the mountain and into the valley, Brian put his foot in it and didn’t look back.
Save for the broken shifter, the LSR XTR-F suspended Rhino was working flawlessly and they were able to take on some of the biggest whoops and ruts they had ever seen. Not much was slowing them down. When they made their way into the first named rock section called “Elvis”, there were a number of stuck, and/or slow moving vehicles blocking the course. Again, Greg got out to assist those drivers through this section. What took probably only five minutes felt like an eternity to Brian who was as patient as could be. Once these vehicles were moved, Brian quickly made his way down through the rock section with Greg spotting him.
Once back at race speed, Brian was driving as if he was going to win this race. They had no idea where they stood, but assumed it was towards the front of the pack as they had already passed a handful of cars, and some that were broken on the side of the course.
When they reached the second named rock section, “Aftershock” they immediately knew that this section was going to be the “make or break” part of the course. After rounding the first corner they were greeted with an excited audience that was cheering them on. While running this section, Greg was out of the car spotting for lines. Sometime during this section a number of spectators told Greg that our team was running in first place. Once through the section Greg reentered the race car and told Brian what he had just heard. Neither of them could believe that they were in first place as they knew that they hadn’t passed 15 cars. At any rate, this news was enough to excite the two into believing that they would not only finish this race, but finish on the podium.  Nervously, Brian once again put his foot in it as to not allow any other racers to catch up. This was met with some resistance from Greg as he wasn’t going to allow Brian to throw it away due to his excitement. There were a few “boulders” that Brian hit so hard the car became partially airborne. “We can’t say enough good things about Factory UTV’s UHMW skid plates.”
Once the team made it over the last pass and had a view into Hammer Town, they slowed down for a moment to look for traffic up front, and behind. There was no sign of any traffic in either direction, and the team still didn’t know for sure whether they were in the lead or not. What they did know, was that there was nobody behind them for miles.
The last three or so miles was a heavily whooped out downhill sand section with the opportunity to open the car up, and put Lonestar Racing’s XTR-F suspension to the test. Brian set the cruise control around 55 mph through this section as it was obvious that we could have gone much faster, but doing so was risking throwing the race away and they were running low on fuel. When the two made it to the “Green”? flag, they were told it was the finish line and that they had placed third!
“This race was by far the best racing experience of my life! There is nothing cooler than high speed desert racing mixed with some of the most demanding and technical rock crawling that a UTV has ever encountered. I have done my share of rock crawling in UTV’s, but never under race conditions. This alone makes for an adrenaline rush like no other! Also, the fact that we’re able to race our UTV’s at what is likely the biggest off-road race in the country, makes it all that much cooler.

I would like to thank my co-driver Greg Frantz for being flat out awesome! He’s a level headed guy with the skills and patience to put up with me, and help guide me along the way. I wish you guys could hear our PCI intercom chatter. We’re quite hilarious. We’re either scared silent, arguing about something, or joking and laughing our ass’ off while we race! I wouldn’t have had the successes that I’ve had in off-road racing if it wasn’t for him. You rock G.”

“I would also like to thank Ultra4Racing, Dave and Jeff Knoll, Reid Nordin, Joey DiGiovanni, Rusty Baptist, and Michael Green of Pitbull Tires for sponsoring this event!
Congratulations to Jagged Extreme for taking home the win, and Mitch Guthrie for his second place finish!”

Mark Turner Injured at the ASCC Season Opener

After racing in the infamous King of the Hammers UTV race on Thursday, Mark “Iron Man” Turner was back in the driver seat Saturday morning for the season opener of the Arizona regional Lucas Oil Series. Unfortunately, an incident during practice resulted in Turner being injured. Speculation on exactly what happened and the extent of Turner’s injuries has been rampant since the disastrous practice session; hopefully this communication will help dispel the rumors.

Though it is unknown whether the accident started as the result of a mechanical failure or something else, what is known is that Turner’s UTV started sliding sideways on the front straight of the Speedworld track about four laps into his practice session. The conditions were very muddy, making it difficult to correct the slide. Just when he needed a break, however, the car caught a rut, causing the car to begin rolling over sideways. At some point during the roll, Turner’s window net failed, which allowed his left arm to be outside the car. Based on his subsequent injuries, it is assumed that his arm was briefly pinned between the rollcage and the ground during one of the three rotations. His helmet also became dislodged during the event, but thankfully no serious head or neck injury took place.

Aside from some fairly significant bruising and a few cuts, Turner suffered a fractured left arm and a broken collarbone. Though still hospitalized, Turner is expected to make a full recovery following surgery to repair some damage sustained to his arm. The Turner Racing Team expects Mark to be back behind the wheel in no time, and probably well before his doctors give him the full green light to do so. Mark is in good spirits and thanks everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support

Success For Walker Evans Racing At King Of The Hammers

RIVERSIDE, CA 2/15/11 - It was another successful week for Walker Evans Racing at the 2011 King Of The Hammers event held in Johnson Valley, CA. Thousands of spectators, teams, and vendors as well as hundreds of would be competitors filled Means Dry Lake Bed all looking for their chance to be crowned the 2011 King Of The Hammers. Only 100 racers would qualify for the big show held last Friday and a fraction would finish this grueling off road race event.
Shannon Campbell in his Monster Energy / Campbell Enterprises single seat rock buggy would prove to be the King coming from a mid pack starting position to win the race while running on Walker Evans Wheels and Goodyear Tires. Walker Evans Racing is proud of Shannon Campbell and his accomplishment this year.  Few are as dedicated to the sport of off road rock racing as Campbell is and it was a pleasure to see his efforts pay off in a big way taking home a $15,000.00 check from Hammer King Productions and the title of King Of The Hammers for 2011.
Tony Pellegrino in his GenRight Off Road machine also started way down the line but managed to pull off a stunning 2nd place finish making a pass in the closing miles of the race.  Despite many challenges during the race Tony and his entire team did a fantastic job of preparing and the results proved that.  Tony was also running Walker Evans Wheels wrapped with Goodyear Tires, a combination that proved to be durable enough to withstand The Hammers and claim the top 2 spots atop the podium!
Rounding out the top 10 for Walker Evans Racing was Gary Feravanti who finished 7th and Les Figueroa who finished 9th in the hammers race.  Both racers also ran the Walker Evans Racing Wheels and Goodyear Tires combination.  We can't express how proud we are off all of our supported teams and racers who competed in this grueling event and came away with not only a finish but a top 10!
In the UTV King Of The Hammers race held last Thursday the defending back to back champion Mitch Guthrie came up just a little short on his quest for a 3rd consecutive title in the UTV class.  Guthrie running our Walker Evans Racing long travel UTV Shocks finished just behind the leader for a solid 2nd place finish. We are proud to support Mitch in his UTV racing efforts and expect to see him back on top again next year!
Walker Evans Racing builds products based around the most rigorous research and development tests and uses events like King Of The Hammers and Baja Racing to prove the durability and strength of our products. Events like these only further our quest for developing the most durable off road related products in the industry. Whether it is our popular Walker Evans Racing Wheels or Shocks you can rest easy knowing that you have the best products for the most extreme situations supporting whatever machine it is you drive.

At Walker Evans Racing our goals is to design and manufacture quality, performance, race-proven products that can used for aftermarket applications. The very same product we produce is the very same product used on numerous race winning vehicles. Based in Riverside, CA Walker Evans Racing has been involved in the off road industry for over 30 years.

Jagged X Wins King of the Hammers with Nearly-Stock RANGER RZR XP 900

Minneapolis, Feb 15, 2011– After three years of racing “King of the Hammers”, the Jagged X team won the side-by-side class with the new and nearly-stock RANGER RZR XP 900!

Since its original debut in 2008, the "King of the Hammers" race has been deemed the toughest off-road race in the world. The course is a 42-mile combination of open desert racing, narrow goat trails and huge rock trails. For the last two years, the Jagged X team raced their desert race car and while they were in the hunt, the heavier full-blown race car came up just short of the win. This year, the team took a little different approach and raced the new and nearly-stock RANGER RZR XP 900. The unit was modified only to comply with the safety requirements and equipped with a set of Elka Elite series shocks.

With the temperature hovering in the low 20s, the Jagged X team lined up in the tenth starting position with seventeen other side-by-sides. When the flag dropped, Brandon Schueler and co-driver Mike West charged off into the California desert with a group of very-well equipped competitors. The RANGER RZR XP 900 did an amazing job of reeling in the rest of the field and by the first rock trail, the team was running in third position. Shortly after, the only car between the No. 1919 and the finish line was the two-time winner Mitch Guthrie, also driving an almost-stock, very nimble and quick RANGER RZR 800. The two were separated by only a few feet for the next 15 miles but then in the last major rock section, known as Aftershock, Schueler was able to squeeze by and capture the lead. The two swapped the lead again in the bottom of the canyon but when the dust cleared, Jagged X came out ahead by nearly five minutes ahead of Guthrie, and the rest of the field was nearly an hour back.

“The new RANGER RZR XP 900 proved once again that Polaris is the only manufacturer to build a car that offers the power, suspension and agility to win one of the toughest races in the world,” said Brandon Schueler. “Jagged X would like to thank everyone who helped us to take the crown and become the KING of the HAMMERS!”

Special thanks go out to Polaris Industries, Elka Suspension, Pro Armor, Simpson safety equipment, CR Designs, OMF Performance and Renegade Seats.

'Respected Access is Open Access' Campaign Addresses Litter

OGDEN, Utah (February 11, 2011) - Tread Lightly! and a consortium of the nation's most influential hunting and shooting sports organizations have released a new print public service announcement (PSA) encouraging responsible behavior on public and private lands while camping, hunting or enjoying any type of outdoor recreation. The new PSA is another tool created for land managers and media outlets as part of the education and outreach campaign called "Respected Access is Open Access."
The new PSA features a litter ridden campsite with the message "Don't Trash the Tradition," designed to inspire outdoor enthusiasts to pick up litter and leave public and private lands better than they were found. This is the ninth PSA created for the Respected Access is Open Access campaign with other PSAs available addressing vandalism, illegal dumping and straying from the trail.

Additional education and outreach campaign updates in 2011 include more print sizes available of existing PSAs, five web banners, and an extended outreach at hunting events including attendance at this year’s popular hunting and shooting enthusiast trade show, the SHOT Show.

Built on extensive research, the campaign was officially launched in September, 2009 to reduce litter, property and natural resource damage, unsafe shooting practices and visitor conflicts as a means of helping to maintain, even enhance, access to public and private lands.

"The campaign was created in partnership with the hunting and shooting community, but the message that responsible behavior leads to continued access should resonate with all those who enjoy recreating in the outdoors," said Lori McCullough, executive director of the nonprofit Tread Lightly!. "Hunting and camping are some of America's favorite pastimes, yet the litter that makes its way to our favorite places is tarnishing the tradition and the reputation of the groups that enjoy these opportunities. Our hope is that by bringing these issues to light we will have a big impact in helping keep the outdoors healthy, open and litter free."

The campaign is currently being funded through grants from Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., through its OHV Access Initiative, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Safari Club International, National Wild Turkey Federation, Boone and Crockett Club, US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. This newest PSA was made possible through the generousity of the Dallas Safari Club.

Tread Lightly! created the Respected Access campaign at the request of the Federal Lands Hunting and Shooting Sports Roundtable. Its members include the Archery Trade Association, Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, Boone & Crocket Club, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Izaak Walton League of America, National Rifle Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pope & Young Club, Public Lands Foundation, Ruffed Grouse Society, Safari Club International and the Wildlife Management Institute, as well as the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and US Fish & Wildlife Service and others.

The PSAs are available for download from the website www.respectedaccess.org. Web visitors can also download recreation tips, order decals and find social networking links.

The group is seeking additional funding sources to achieve its education and outreach goals. More information about getting involved with the campaign can be found at www.respectedaccess.org.

In 2006, a consortium of fish and wildlife conservation organizations and three federal land management agencies signed the Federal Lands Hunting, Fishing & Shooting Sports Memorandum of Understanding. As a result of this agreement, the Federal Lands Hunting and Shooting Sports Roundtable was created to focus on improving access and opportunities for hunters and recreational shooters across America. The Respected Access education campaign is one of the Roundtable’s top initiatives.

The organizations and agencies signed on the Federal Lands Hunting, Fishing & Shooting Sports MOU are: USDA Forest Service, USDI Bureau of Land Management, USDI Fish & Wildlife Service, American Sportfishing Association, Archery Trade Association, Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, Bear Trust International, Boone & Crockett Club of America, Bow Hunting Preservation Alliance, Campfire Club of America, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Conservation Force, Dallas Safari Club, Delta Waterfowl Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Wild Sheep Foundation, Houston Safari Club, Izaak Walton League of America, National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses, National Rifle Association of America, National Shooting Sport Foundation, National Trapper’s Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, North American Bear Foundation, North American Grouse Partnership, Orion – The Hunter’s Institute, Pheasants Forever, Pope & Young Club, Public Lands Foundation, Quail Unlimited, Quality Deer Management Association, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ruffed Grouse Society, Safari Club International, Sand County Foundation, Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, Texas Wildlife Association, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, Whitetails Unlimited, Wildlife Forever and the Wildlife Management Institute.

The series will also be returning to the always popular Speedworld Off Road Park to hit its challenging mogul section for five out of the eight rounds.

The Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series in both Arizona and Southern California will be utilizing a common rule book that clearly defines class specifications, safety requirements and prepares the racers for the big leagues. The all new Mini Stock Division in both venues and the addition of the Full Stock Class in Southern California have already garnered a lot of attention. As of late, the forums are busy with talks, plans, and posts of new purpose built vehicles dedicated to those classes.

Dan Pentico, the Business Development Director for the Arizona Short Course Regional Series stated "The Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series-ASCC is receiving more pre-registrations than ever before and we are welcoming racers that are regular participants from the bigger Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. Many of our drivers have recognized that running the regional program in addition to the larger series is a great way to grab some more seat time while engaging in some great competitive racing. The true racers know there is always room for improvement and these regional series provide an affordable reason to get out and race."

Pentico was also excited to elaborate on the ASCC's plans for increased media coverage for 2011. "We are thrilled to note that Deviate Films will feature a recap video at selected rounds of our series. Even bigger news is the possible allotment of 2011 TV coverage. Produced by MDR Entertainment LLC., Lucas Oil has approved a total of 8 hours of coverage for the Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series - ASCC to be aired on the MAV TV Network. The shows will feature a look behind the scenes, featuring the racing action as well as the racers, teams, and families that are involved at the regional level."
