Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park Announces New Trails Opening

11 miles of new trails connect Slab Fork, promoting possible development of a community trailhead.

Sophia, WV – February 23, 2012:  Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park announces the opening of five new off-road trails including a connector into the historic coal camp town of Slab Fork.  The trails, totaling eleven miles in length, allows park visitors and residents direct access to the trail system and town.
Trails on the Burning Rock system are rated for difficulty using a color-coded system that is similar to the one ski resorts use: green (easy), blue (medium) and black (difficult).  Three of the new trails are rated green and two are blue.  The addition of these trails brings the park’s total to seventy-four trails (106 miles total).
Efforts are underway via a partnership with Burning Rock, Beaver Coal Company, Limited (the land owner) and the residents of Slab Fork to ‘breathe new life into’ the coal camp town that was established in 1907.  They have formed an active community association that focuses upon clean-up, restoration, and community revitalization.
“With this new direct trail access, opportunities exist for the town’s economic growth as a potential trailhead”, said Woody Duba, General Manager of Beaver Coal Company Limited. “Riders coming off the trail system will be curious to explore the town, have a meal somewhere, or learn about the local mining history.  They can even stay overnight in rentals that are being developed from the original homes as they become available, such as Coal Camp Getaways Cottage.  They’ll have direct ‘door to trail’ access.”
Burning Rock plans to continue development of more trails in the Slab Fork area as they continue their expansion efforts in 2012.
According to Lisa Gale, Burning Rock’s Director of Marketing, “We have something for almost everyone to enjoy, whether they ride the trails or not.  But looking at off-road riders specifically, they demand new trails and new challenges regularly - that’s what keeps them motivated to keep coming back.  Our goal is to add 80 miles of new trails to the park this year and at least 50 miles annually thereafter… so stay tuned!”

About Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park
Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park is located on 8000 acres near Sophia, West Virginia on Tams Mountain.  Off-road enthusiasts, racers, vacationers and locals alike enjoy the year round facility offering more than 100 miles of professionally developed & maintained ATV/UTV/dirt bike trails.  In addition to the trails, the park offers the Burning Rock Express dual-racing zip line, guided ATV/UTV tours, rental cabins, campsites and RV sites.  To learn more about Burning Rock Outdoor Adventure Park or Coal Camp Getaways Cottage visit burningrockwv.com or call 1.877.683.9240 for further information.

Polaris RZR 570 Exhaust now available from HMF

The new Ranger RZR 570 has a lot of similarities with the it's older brother the RZR XP 900. The engine in the RZR 570 is an all-new ProStar 570 single cylinder, DOHC, electronic fuel injected engine. The RZR 900 XP was the first to introduce the new ProStar engine lineup. So what did we do with it? We took our baddest exhausts, the Swamp and Swamp XL, and developed a Full System that gets enough power to knock any rider's socks off, without blowing out your ear drums.

Winter Storms make for Weird Sand at the Winchester Bay Sand Dunes

As we rolled out of the campsite, and headed for the dune access across the road,
I thought how great it was to get out in the dunes, no matter the weather, it was going to be a great ride. I checked to make sure my seat belt was latched, and familiarized myself with where the grab handles ( HOLY SH#% handles) were, in Jason's Can-Am Commander 1000 X, grateful he offered me to ride shotgun.
We crossed the road and entered the dune access road, whooped up as normal, I thought as we bounced through them at the posted speed limit. As the road opens into the first expanse of dunes I can tell the last few winter storms (some with 100mph winds) and wet weather has made some changes. The sand is wet fluff, and choppy but not too bad. I figured the whole group would meet at Banshee Hill, and everyone would make at least an attempt and most would go over the top no problem. We all met at Banshee, and someone made a run in a RZR XP 900 on paddles, he had to check up just before the trees, due to a couple quads coming down through the trees. When he tried to take back off, he threw some big roost but never moved. He started to back up and the dune started to take control attempting to turn him sideways and over towards the steep side hill. As he worked his way slowly around, the path was clear. My driver pounded the throttle and off we went, accelerating towards the bottom of the hill, I thought good speed, good approach, can't wait to see the view and get some pictures from the top. Just before we got to the trees it sounded like the engine started to bog a little and as we got into the trees, it felt like we ran into a bog of wet cotton balls. Momentum all but stopped and clumps of wet sand were sacrificed skyward by the tires.
After several of the side by sides tried and failed, a couple quads made the run and you could hear their engines bog in the same spot. We made a second run, getting 20 feet further with the same final result after backing down, we headed south east out into the dunes. The sand was wet and rough, especially where the main traffic was. As we cruised along the top edge of a dune I watched the sand on the south side. There were razorbacks, humps n' lumps and hard sad jut outs, nothing you would want to roll over at speed without checking it out first.
The "Backside" of a dune (photo by Chad Meyer)
As we reached the drop into a valley that leads to "buttercup" and the backside of Banshee Hill, we stopped and a bunch of the group ran the downhill / uphill loop ending their runs with nice jumps. The rain started an aggressive assault on us fun lovers, but we were distracted and able to practically ignore it.

Jason dropped in and we headed up and to the right towards "buttercup", running through a tight trail that leads to the sand groove that runs up and into "buttercup". About halfway up we ran into thick, wet, coastal fog. "Good time to turn around" he says, "for sure, I thought my goggles were just fogging up bad," I answered.

We headed out through the trails and made the climb out of the valley and headed further south to a big 3/4 bowl, and made a couple really good high marks. The sand didn't seem too loose or that "fluffy" here. We had good traction and no breakaways even on a high speed steep sidehill. We headed to another big climb and made it right to the peak before the sand won. Someone came up on our left and capped the dune. Judging by the amount of wet sand we both ate, they were running paddles. We backed down, ( I made a slight adjustment to his MUZZYS DigiTuner) and made another run at it, topping it with ease, as we headed down the backside there were drops with kicker humps and double kickers with sharp edges. I have never seen the dunes this ugly, rough on the backsides of the dunes, and as we ran towards some of the transition flats I notice the incredible amount of standing water and how rutted and rough the flats were. As a veteran of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area I have seen a lot of weird conditions, but nothing quite like these conditions.
The rain was starting to cause some visibility issues and we started to head back. Spotting one of our comrades pulling out a tow strap we headed over to check and see what happened. Turns out my volunteer video camera man had knocked the air filter loose ( it sticks up between the seats) and got his jacket sucked into the intake, flooding the engine so bad it wouldn't start. He had a tow vehicle lined up so we headed back.
The trip back through through the flats and small dunes was a great high speed run, with Jason masterfully dodging a couple water hazards that appeared on short notice, and ran through a section of trails, on the west side of the dunes area, that are always fast and fun with high banked corners left and right, the only downfall being how badly most of the straight stretches were whooped out. We exited the trails, made one more speed burn ending almost at the entrance road, and as we slowed down, we reveled in how strange some of the sand conditions were and how whooped out the entrance road was.
Returning to camp and jumping out, we got a hearty laugh at how covered we were in wet sand due to the roost job from a yet unknown source, and how wet we actually were, head to butt, from the rain.

Although the sand conditions were not perfect, it was great to get out in the dunes, and provided me with a reminder of just how treacherous the conditions in the dunes can be, and how important it is to look BEFORE you leap, especially in the ever changing dunes.

Special thanks to : Jason , Save The Rides Dunes, Discovery Point RV resort, and all the GOONS in the DUNES !

The 2012 Dealer Expo is a wrap. The Dealer Expo is the largest business-to-business trade show for the powersports industry and helps connect powersports dealers to the companies that make the products they sell.  More than 700 exhibitors, literally thousands of new product introductions and a crowd estimated to approach 20,000 once again made the Dealer Expo the biggest weekend in the powersports industry.

Our favorite UTV from the show is the Arctic Cat Wildcat in the DragonFire Racing booth. DragonFire has been working overtime to get this cat ready for the show with all sorts of cool new parts and accessories. This Wildcat has 14" DFR beadlocks with ITP BajaCross tires, DFR bolt-on RacePace cage add-ons (Flying V cage support, tire carrier and head ache bars), DFR LED light bar, plus their new dual exhaust.

The new exhaust was created by Vance & Hines in collaboration with the DragonFire and debuted at the show over the weekend.

ORBA efforts help raise over $8000.00 for SavetheHammers.org

The Off Road Business Association attended the 6th Running of the Griffin King of the Hammers last week in Johnson Valley, California. Fred and Jeff worked worth California Motorized Recreation Council Leadership and multiple ORBA members to raise much needed funds to help starve off the 29 palms Base expansion efforts that will see the loss of 160,000 acres of the 185,000-acre OHV area. The Johnson Valley OHV area is the Largest OHV area in the United States, and home to the King of the hammers event, which attracted 20,000 spectators and created millions of dollars in economic impact to the Southern California economy. OHV users from around the globe attended the event.

Jeff Knoll attended the Opening Drivers Meeting and shared Base expansion details with the race teams, which prompted teams to open their wallets and donate $2,625.00 on the spot in a matter of minutes. Fred again attended the UTV Drivers meeting and the UTV racers donated an additional $1,100 dollars. ORBA Member SXSPerformance.com promptly donated an additional $500.00 as a result of the generous donations from the UTV racers.

The ORBA Poker walk only generated $200.00 in donations but gave ORBA a great opportunity to educate the general public on the work ORBA is doing with its membership. SXSPerformance.com, Poison Spyder Customs, Trail Gear, Ruff Stuff Specialties, and Torchmate Racing all participated in the Poker walk. Poison Spyder Customs hopes to expand the Poker walk to additional events as they felt it was a fun way to interact with attendees of the event.

Raceline/Allied Wheels a long-standing ORBA member hosted a taco-eating contest on Thursday night and raised an additional $638.00 in donations. Last but not least Torchmate racings Brad and Roger Lovell hosted an auction the month before KOH that put an additional $1,250.00 into the CMRC Save the Hammers account. Perhaps the biggest effort that will come from the KOH event will be the National OHV Lobby Days that we will cover later in this newsletter. Over 3000 fliers where distributed and a unified message of taking the day to visit your local legislator where driven home at KOH.

YOSHIMURA R&D OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES UTV PERFORMANCE EXHAUST AND HARD PART APPLICATIONS

CHINO, CA (February 14, 2012) – Yoshimura R&D of America is proud to announce a line of performance exhausts and hard parts for the extremely popular UTV market. In recent years, UTVs and Side x Sides have emerged as one of the top off-road sports. We were excited for the opportunity to put our knowledge, skill, and craftsmanship forth and develop performance products for these machines. In order to produce the most functional and durable products available, we had to find someone who could test and abuse them on a regular basis. No one fit the bill better than William Yokley of Yokley Racing. William is no stranger to riding or the podium. He began riding as a child, racing by age 15, and has since captured several ATV and UTV Championships, including the Baja 1000.

Yoshimura has been working intently with Yokley Racing to develop parts specific to racing, while also benefiting the weekend warrior. Because we take racing very seriously, we utilized the best technological equipment available. Through the use of high-tech data acquisition and GPS tracking technology, similar to those used in Formula One racing, we've developed the best performing products in the industry. With additional input from Yokley and his team, we've tuned intakes, exhausts, engines, engine management, and fuel – everything conceivable for the best performance possible. Yoshimura is proud to play a role in the development of UTV performance and racing.

The RS-8 slip-ons are manufactured from polished 304 stainless steel and feature a deep draw polished stainless steel end cap. The muffler itself is quite innovative. It features multi-staged construction that starts with a straight baffle that initially flows into a large volume perforated baffle chamber. From there gases flow into a floating baffle that is integrated into the end cap. In side the floating baffle is a USFS approved spark arrestor. Low 96dB sound levels keep the RS-8 friendly on the trails. The overall design produces big increases in power and torque.

The RS-4 is a technological marvel and packed with features, like a Carbon Fiber end cap a first in the UTV market, a USFS approved spark arrestor, Yoshimura’s exclusive resonance chamber and 2-stage stepped internal baffle, this effectively acts as a mechanical system and in turn improves power while lowering dbs.

The RS-2D (Dual Muffler) is a really versatile and very potent pipe. It is basically an evolution of our original TRC design but with a slightly different (pyramidal) shape that features increased volume. The volume enables a quieter system and larger cores; this in turn increases power and power delivery. Comes with a USFS approved spark arrestor.

Yoshimura will have a host of slip-on, full systems and hard parts available soon for the most popular makes, models and applications.

    UTV Full Systems

These Full Systems pull out all the stops. Each is CNC mandrel bent using 304 Stainless Steel tubing for a long lasting, durable and rust-resistant life. Headers feature an over-sized step tube design for maximum power through out the entire RPM range. Our systems not only out perform stock exhaust systems, they weight less too.

RZR XP 900: Carbon Fiber Intake Scoops

The stock RZR XP 900 intake panels are adequate, but we needed something better. We designed these Air Scoops to fit over the stock intake ports, providing maximum air-flow to the engine. They are not only extremely functional, but lightweight and styled to compliment the RZR's sharp lines.

RZR XP 900: Carbon Fiber Mirror Kit

While most of our R&D focuses on maximizing performance, we're also concerned about safety. The more we ran our XP at the track and off-road, the more we desired mirrors. This kit is simple to install and the convex mirror provides much needed vision behind you. Similar to our air scoops, they feature lightweight carbon/aluminum construction and styled for the XP.

RZR XP 900: Aluminum Racing Roof

Spending all day in your XP is a blast! But the sun and environment can eventually take their toll on the best of drivers. We designed our Aluminum Racing Roof to be provide maximum protection from the sun, keeping in-car temperatures more pleasant for driver and passenger. Aluminum keeps the weight down, but sturdy enough for the harshest of conditions.

    Coming Soon...

RZR XP 900: Aluminum Wind Deflector

The Aluminum Wind Deflector provides even more comfort for all day excursions. By deflecting air upward from the front of the car, it reduces turbulence and helmet buffeting, allowing the driver to remain focus and less fatigued. The deflector also limits the amount of dirt, mud, and debris hitting the occupants while racing or trailing others off-road.

    Coming Soon...

RZR XP 900: Radiator Roost Guard

The Radiator Roost Guard was one of the first products we developed for the RZR XP. Protecting your radiator and maintaining coolant temperatures is important in all aspects of driving. While racing, we found a lot of mud and debris accumulated on the radiator causing undesirable temperatures. The Radiator Roost Guard deflect debris off to the side allowing your radiator to remain clear and do it's job. This is a great alternative to spending hundreds more on radiator relocation kit.

Can-AM ATV and Side-By-Side Racers Notch WORCS and TORN Series Victories

Valcourt, QuĂ©bec, February 15, 2012 – Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 Pro racer Josh Frederick won round two of the 2012 World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) held in the desert at Buffalo Bill’s Casino and Resort in Primm, Nevada. Can-Am X-Team racer Hunter Miller won the Pro 450 ATV class and also won the UTV Unlimited class in the Texas Off-Road Nationals (TORN) series at Beaumont Ranch in Grandview, Texas.

“Our Can-Am racers had successful weekends in both Nevada and Texas. Josh Frederick has gotten off to a great start this year on his DS 450, moving into a tie for the ATV Pro class points lead. He put in a great effort on the ATV and in the Commander 1000 X side-by-side vehicle in WORCS,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “Hunter Miller had a great debut in the Commander 1000 X in its TORN series debut, and also started the 2012 season off on the right foot with a Pro class victory aboard the DS 450.”

    WORCS
Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 pilot Dillon Zimmerman grabbed the WORCS ATV Pro-class holeshot after the dead-engine start, and led for two laps to start the Nevada round. However, a mechanical issue forced Zimmerman into the pits for a brief repair. He re-entered the mix, but ended the day in eighth place.

Frederick had his own challenge, as he was just outside the top five at the start of the race. After steadily moving to the front, Frederick found his way around the leader near the one-hour mark. From there, the former WORCS ATV Champion and Nevada native dominated on his home turf. He crossed the finish line more than a minute in front of the second-place rider. It was his first win of 2012 and pulled him into a tie for the Pro class points lead heading into round three.

“It was really dusty at first and the track was rough, so I just had to ride cautiously,” said Frederick. “I moved up pretty quickly and when I took the lead, I just kind of cruised. It felt like it’s been a long time since I was on top of the podium, so it felt really good to be up there. The Can-Am DS 450 always shines in the rough stuff.”

In other ATV class action, Can-Am X-Team racer and reigning Pro-Am ATV Champion Collins Webster finished second in the Pro-Am class and also won the Production A class on his DS 450.

In just his second official race behind the wheel of the Motoworks-prepped Can-Am Commander 1000 X, Frederick overcame a tough start to finish fourth in the SxS Production 1000 class against 37 other racers. After getting hit from behind by another racer at the start, Frederick showed the poise of a champion and calmly clawed his way back into podium contention during the 45-minute race. He came up just a few seconds shy of making in on the box, but was happy with his fourth-place finish.

Round three of WORCS is scheduled for March 16-18, in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

    TORN
Hunter Miller, the defending Pro 450 class champion, jumped out to an early lead aboard his Louis Powersports-backed Can-Am DS 450. He battled for the lead with his brother and fellow Can-Am X-Team member Cody Miller and another racer until the midway point. Hunter held off both riders and finished roughly 14 seconds ahead of Cody for the win.

Hunter also notched a victory in the UTV Unlimited class in a nearly stock (aside from the exhaust, wheels and tires) Can-Am Commander 1000 X. Throughout the race Miller held off challenges from two highly modified, turbo-charged side-by-sides. Cody Miller also made his TORN debut behind the wheel of a Can-Am Commander 1000 X. He finished second overall in the UTV Limited class, just two seconds behind the winner.

Round three of the TORN series is slated for March 24-25, in Callisburg, Texas.

ITP will be raising eyebrows in 2012 with the SS216, a radical addition to the renowned SS Alloy wheel line.

The lightweight, one-piece aluminum SS216 is as aggressive as it looks, due in large part to ITP’s all-new Rock Armor reinforced inner wheel lip design. This advanced feature makes an already high-endurance wheel even more bulletproof. ITP’s SS Alloy wheels have come standard with a lifetime structural warranty for years—an industry first, as a matter of fact—and that applies to the SS216 as well. Now with its Rock Armor construction, the SS216 provides unquestioned owner confidence.

The SS216 is tough enough to boast a 1000-lb. load rating for both its 12x7 and 14x7 sizes, perfect for the requirements of the most demanding, modern side-by-side UTV applications. Of course the SS216 is a perfect match for most popular utility/4x4 ATVs as well. It rolls out in a bright machined finish with black accents and is topped with a durable clear coat to help maintain its rugged style. A matching SS™ center cap is included with every wheel.

ARCTIC CAT WILDCAT FLEXES ITS MUSCLE IN ITS FIRST-EVER ENDURANCE RACE

D&P Performance Races to 1st Place Finish at King of the Hammers in 900-1000 Production Class

Thief River Falls, Minn. (Feb. 15, 2012) –  If there ever was a question as to the durability, speed and pure-sport capabilities of the all-new Arctic Cat Wildcat, those doubts were laid to rest at the toughest one-day off-road race on the planet – King of the Hammers (KOH).

Driver, Todd Stephensen from D&P Performance, an Arctic Cat dealer based out of Cedar City, Utah, worked his way through 39 UTV entries to a first place finish in the 900-1000 Production class, and a second place finish overall, in a near stock 2012 Arctic Cat Wildcat. The King of the Hammers series challenges drivers to compete in a wide variety of terrain from endurance desert racing to competition-style rock crawls to short course racing in Johnson Valley, Ca.

Stephensen said, “We had a very limited amount of time to test this Wildcat for the event as it was just pulled off our showroom floor weeks ago. The capability of the Wildcat’s suspension through the severity of this terrain is truly amazing for a stock production vehicle!”

Arctic Cat CEO, Claude Jordan stated, “We are extremely proud of the team at D&P Performance. With an industry-first, 5-Link rear suspension, 13-inches of ground clearance and whopping 18-inches of suspension travel, tough terrain racing is where the Wildcat shines. And D&P proved that!”

For more information on the King of the Hammers race, please visit www.ultra4racing.com.  To learn more about D&P Performance, please visit their Arctic Cat dealership in Cedar City, UT or log on to www.dandpperformance.net or www.arcticcat.com for in-depth information on the all-new Wildcat.

Crowley Offroad's 2012 King of the Hammers UTV Race Recap

Griffin King of the Hammers Race
For most people that migrate to Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley, CA each winter, it is all about the buggy race on Friday. But now in its' fourth year, UTVs are making a big statement. The 2012 Pit Bull Tires King of The Hammers UTV Race Presented by SXSPerformance.com made a move to International Side X Side Association (ISA) rules with five different classes of UTVs: Unlimited 4, Production 1000, Production 850, Production 700, and Beginner/Stock. Chatter on the internet was big and over 30 UTVs had pre-registered for the race with several others known to be racing that would sign up on the lake bed.
This year’s seventy-eight mile course would be a combination of desert trails and rock trails that take competitors around one lap of Johnson Valley. The rough desert along with a couple of the famous Hammer trails were sure to prove the durability of both the driver and machine.

We arrived at Johnson Valley on the Saturday before Thursday's UTV race so that we would have plenty of time to pre-run the course, shake down the car a few more times, then get tech inspection all handled. This was to be my fourth year running the UTV race, and I had spent the last few months working on my Kawasaki Teryx to make sure we were ready. I felt more prepared and relaxed for this year's race than I have ever been. Unfortunately, while testing the car on Monday afternoon, we blew a head gasket. Just my luck.

    Polaris RZR XP

Not wanting to toss in the towel on the race, I started to formulate alternatives. I had brought along my Polaris RZR XP 900 for pre-running and use it quite a bit in the dunes. We already had Pro Armor doors and harnesses, Beard seats and several Race Pace products from DragonFire Racing (front/rear bumpers, back bones, tire carrier, replacement a-arms, V brace and radius arms) that made the jump to ISA rules a possibility. I took a drive down to Hammertown and talked to Mike Lasher who was handling tech for the race. He said I was pretty close, but would need window nets, and amber light and an aluminum roof. In addition to being a board member of the ISA, Mike also owns SXSPerformance.com and was selling UTV parts and accessories in Hammertown. It was great to have support from the UTV industry at the event for many of the last minute details and repairs. One of the cool products to come out in the last year is made by PRP Seats and geared towards RZR owners that have Pro Armor doors and want to race. PRP's window nets mount right up to a stock cage with Pro Armor doors. The velcro in place and can be easily installed and removed so the weekend warrior can race one day and play the next. Thankfully Mike had a set in stock and made the path to race day much easier.

Tuesday morning came Dave, Rich, my co-dog Wally and I set about getting the car prepped. We added an aluminum piece under our plastic roof. We moved the GPS over from another car and swapped the billet centers on our OMF beadlocks so we could run the tall 27.5" Pit Bull Rockers. Installed an amber light and mounted the IRC tracker. I already had PURE Polaris rock sliders and trailing arm guards helped protect the underside, but I did not have anything but the stock skid plate. If I had planned to race my XP, I would have had some 1/2" UHMW skids under there from Factory UTV.

After getting everything installed, Wally and I headed out to see how it felt. I had a set of Stage III upgraded shocks from Fox Racing Shox and met up with Jerry Penhall (Penhall Racing) so he could help us tune the shocks. The front end looked great, and we added a few clicks of low-speed compression and slowed down the rebound quite a bit in the rear. We also added a little bit more pre-load to help us get through the rocks without dragging the skid plate everywhere.

The night before the race, we had a driver's meeting down in Hammertown where they drew starting positions. I had been setup in the Unlimited 4 class with my Teryx, but now could fall into Production 1000 as well. Since our goal for the race had changed a bit and we were just looking to finish and have fun, I decided to move back to Production 1000. This would prove to be a key decision in our race. I knew that Unlimited 4's were to start first, but it turned out that 18 UTVs had signed up for that class. Ugh! After drawing positions, we would start the race 25th off the line. The start was to be two at a time, every 30 seconds so we were going to be 12 minutes behind the first cars and well engulfed in the huge dust clouds created in Johnson Valley. Oh well, let's just relax and have fun.

The morning of the race was very chilly and with the adrenaline pumping in full force, I was pretty jittery. I told Wally to remind me to just relax and have fun. Just have to finish. Unfortunately, Wally had been sick for the last few days and had almost lost his voice so I couldn't really hear much of him through our Rugged Radios. There went that plan...

The jump off the start line looked like a kicker, and the dust was really thick. I really did not want to make any stupid mistakes early on, so I drove cautiously for the first 5 miles or so. Within the first few miles though, we started to pass other cars and felt pretty good. At first I counted them, but then got myself confused and gave up. But it felt good to have passed half a dozen by the time we hit the first lake bed. The car felt real solid and we had settled into a comfortable pace. We continued to pass a car here and there and saw Martel coming up. This was the first rock section, but was easy compared to what we had coming. At the first part of Martel, we came upon a RZR 4 that was setup for desert racing. They were stuck , and with the long wheelbase I knew we needed to get in front of them ASAP. Their co-dog was out of the car, and I yelled that we could give them a push. I got the thumbs up and put my DragonFire "Bash" bumper to the test. It took just a nudge and they were over the rock that had them high centered. They thankfully let us by and we were on our way.

After Martel, we were back to more open desert and clicked off more miles until the first pit. We passed a few more cars then made the u-turn at the pit area and headed to Elvis. We had not setup anything for the first pit, and thankfully we did not need it. I was feeling real good about our race at the 30-mile mark, but was a little nervous about Elvis in 15 more miles. I could see a few cars in front of me, so we pushed a little harder than I had been to see if we could get ahead of anyone. Although we gained some time, we came into the canyon without passing any more cars. Once we got into the last part of Elvis where the big rocks are, we saw a big line of cars in front of us. Just what I had feared.

We approached the line of cars and tried to be patient. The easiest line plus another that did not look so good were blocked by cars in front of us and 3 or 4 cars were in line as well. One other looked to be beating his car up pretty hard on a third line. Figuring it was just a matter of time before the "easy" line freed up, we sat and waited. Besides UHMW skids, the other piece of equipment I did not have that I would have had if I had prepared for racing my RZR XP was a Warn winch. Without it, I really did not want to take too many chances on a tough alternate line in Elvis. We waited a bit more, then Wally prodded me to make a move. I was just starting to get into position when Jarred Newman #2346 jumped in front of me on the alternate line. That hesitation would most likely cost me third place at the finish line. They got down the first obstacle and then we followed and got a bit stuck. Wally hopped out and gave me a little push and down we went. We worked our way through and then Adam Woodlee #262 was able to sneak down from his spot in line to right in front of us. Adam got stuck in a tough spot and ended up breaking something on his front end. Now things looked even worse! I yelled at my co-dog Wally to tell them that I would push them forward with my bumper. I guess I jumped the gun a bit because they weren't quite ready for me. I settled down and waited for Wally's sign then pushed them forward. Whew, they were free and limped the rest of the way down Elvis in 2 wheel drive.

We were back in the desert and feeling pretty good. We had passed about 6 or so cars in Elvis, but had lost 20+ minutes doing so. Me made our way through some tough cross-grain sections and a ton of up and down where you really have to watch your speed before reaching Pit 2. Dave and Rich were waiting for us and made quick work of adding fuel and checking over the car. All looked good and there was one car not too far in front of us. Just before leaving, our pit crew said there were only four cars in front of us. That didn't seem possible to me, but we set our sights on the car that went through the pits a few minutes ahead of us.

We found Johnny Ford #120 up on Fissure Mountain where they had stopped to fix something. With no one else in sight, we headed down Jack North. This rock trail is easier than the Elvis alternate line we took, but much longer. We picked our way through the rocks until finally we reached the desert floor again. We had less than 15 miles to go to the finish and everything was running great. We clicked off miles until the dry lake bed just a few miles from the start/finish line. Wally and I were getting excited.

Now just a mile from the finish, we passed a good crowd just below Back Door and then made our way up a steep hill with real loose footing. I was struggling a bit more than I should have been when I noticed we were in 2 wheel drive. Doh! I shifted to 4WD and tossed it into low for good measure and worked our way to the top. The finish line was just ahead and I set my sights on it, when we hit a big dip that through us up in the air. Oops! I can't believe I missed that! I slowed and rolled across the finish line. In front of us were just three cars - Mitch Guthrie #55 raced Unlimited 4 in his Polaris RZR XP, Todd Stephensen #1944 raced Production 1000 in his Arctic Cat Wildcat, and Jarred Newman #2436 who raced Production 1000 in his RZR XP. Wow! We were really 4th overall.

It wasn't until a few days later that I saw that #2346 were the guys that had sneaked in front of us at Elvis. Damn! That is what I get for hesitating....

At the end of the day, only 17 of 39 cars (43%) actually finished. Wally and I had zero issues all day long (no flats, no broken bolts, nothing!) and accomplished what we set out to do - finish the race and have fun doing it. The RZR XP and all the aftermarket parts we added exceeded our expectations.

The next day, I took the nets off and tore around Johnson Valley watching the buggy race. Race one day and play the next. Nice.

Days like this make racing fun, and I sure hope to be back at it again next year. Crossing my fingers for more rocks though!
