CA LEGISLATURE TERMINATES SUPPORT FOR OHV RECREATION ON FEDERAL LANDS

SACRAMENTO, CA (June 29, 2012) -- A scheme crafted by an environmental activist and the California Parks Foundation to terminate a 40-year partnership with the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management was signed into law by Governor Brown on June 27, 2012. The "Sustainable Parks Initiative" has as its core tenet a politically motivated directive that functionally eliminates the user-pay/user-benefit grant funding from the California State Park's Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHMVRD) to local and federal agencies that manage OHV recreation.

The state OHV program is 100% funded with user generated fees that come from OHV fuel taxes, registration, and unit entry fees. The program was created by the legislature in 1971 and used pre-program off-road fuel tax refunds to support management of OHV recreation on local, state, and federal lands. The local assistance grants program was a critically important element to local and federal agencies since most OHV-related fuel tax and recreation occurs on federal lands.

Historically, the grants program has provided funding for OHV-related trail maintenance, engineered trail construction, facilities, recreation staff, habitat restoration, law enforcement, search and rescue, public education, and safety training. Many of the OHV recreation sites are in economically depressed rural areas that depend on the tourism generated by program support. Some county units are near large population centers such as Santa Clara County's Metcalf Cycle Park near San Jose.

Don Amador, Western Representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition, states, "Contrary to statements made by the plan's champions in the legislature, neither Senator Joe Simitian, nor Assemblyman Jared Huffman, nor the Foundation ever came to the OHV community to find solutions to the important budget issues that could have been addressed without targeting the grants program for elimination. There was a concerted effort to mislead other legislators, media, and the public that the cuts would not have any impact to OHV, and would not result in any closures or reduced opportunity."

"It is extremely disappointing to me that the Foundation has chosen to align itself with an extreme element of the environmental movement in an effort to drive a wedge between the OHV community and the rest of California State Parks. Dismantling the OHV Program has been the life-long goal of a few green activists, and the Foundation appears to have helped them succeed. Since important federal resource protection projects will now have to be shelved, it proves that advocates of the plan don't care about the environment, but are simply interested in pushing their far-left political agenda" Amador continued.

Amador concluded, "Sadly, rather than address the real issue here to devise and apply a legitimate long-term solution, they have exacerbated the problem by gutting a working, self-sustaining model program."

“We reintroduced long distance desert endurance racing to Northern Nevada in 2011 and the response was fantastic,” said VORRA Race Director Wes Harbor. “For 2012 we’re continuing to put together challenging courses and at the same time making it more affordable for grass roots racers to join the fray.”

The event stages, starts and finishes at the Terrible’s Travel Center at Exit 48 on Interstate 80, 30 minutes east of Reno. The 529-mile course, which includes a 155-mile loop, starts in Fernley and takes racers northeast past Lovelock over a classic mix of desert terrain, including sections VORRA has used over its 37-year history.

Terracross Championship Kicks Off With Terra In The Pits

Rath, Gust, Carlson, Beckman Win Pro Mains

Elk River, Minn. (June 25, 2012) – The Terracross Championship kicked off its 2012 race season with a massive event held just north of Minneapolis at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minn. The two-day, double-header event marked the return of Terracross racing to the ATV and UTV racing world and featured top action sports names such as Rath, Gust, Beckman, Burandt and Thacker competing on a brutal course built within the confines of the dedicated motorsports park. Jumps, mud, rocks as well as log and tire obstacles made for intense competition over the course of the two-day race weekend and proved highly-challenging for the field of experienced drivers.

Doug Gust took an early lead in Friday’s Pro Terracross Side X Side main with Andrew Carlson slotting his Polaris RZR in second place. Gust’s machine suffered a mechanical issue about halfway through the race allowing Carlson to take the lead and cruise to the win. Gust took the lead again in the Pro Terracross Utility Quad main but the course took its toll on his equipment again when a flat tire ended his run. Rory Beckman took over the lead and cruised to the win.

Gust's luck turned on Saturday and he came back to take the win in the Pro Terracross Utility Quad main. Not only did he win, he nabbed the holeshot and setting a blistering pace through the Terracross course, leading flag-to-flag. Darryl Rath put in a similar performance in the Pro Terracross Side X Side main. On green, Rath’s Polaris RZR shot off the line and into the lead and he quickly gapped the field with Gust and Carlson in tow. Rath put on a clinic, leading flag-to-flag to take his first Terracross Side X Side win.
Jon Guetter claimed the Speed & Style final both Friday and Saturday. Dave Elias won Friday’s ProAm Side X Side main while Josh Schutte came back to win Saturday’s race. Zac Zakowski won both ProAm Utility Quad mains.

Extreme sports athlete Jimmy Blaze capped off the weekend when he attempted to flip his Polaris RZR. Blaze uses a stock RZR with only a reinforced cage and containment seat for added safety and Fox Racing Shox specially-valved to help the vehicle rotate off a ramp designed by Blaze. The flip was the first-ever in front of television cameras. Blaze came in too fast and over-rotated the flip, landing the vehicle on its rear bumper. Fans can see it all on CBS Sports Spectacular:
• Sunday, July 8: Terracross Championship, 9:00 PM
• Sunday, July 15: Terra In The Pit, 9:00 PM
• Sunday, July 22: Terra In The Pit, 9:00 PM

“Terra In The Pits was an amazing event,” said Terracross’ Joe Duncan. “There were a lot of people who worked long and hard behind the scenes to make it all come together and I want to thank them for committing to bringing back Terracross. Also, a big thanks goes to the athletes who believe in the sport and make the show happen – guys like Doug Gust, Darryl Rath, Chris Burandt and Paul Thacker just to name a few – all the riders are great people and they are the reason the fans watch us.”

The second event is set to take place September 8-9, 2012 at the Sno Barons Haydays Snowmobile Grass Drags extravaganza in Sunrise Township, Minn., also located just north of Minneapolis. Terracross Championship action will air on CBS Sports Network as part of five one-hour programs beginning on July 8.

Andrew Carlson Terrorizes TerraCross Opener at ERX Motor Park

Elk River, Minnesota (June 27, 2012) – It was a coming out party like no other as TerraCross racing returned to the forefront of the off-road racing community and side-x-side wheelman rising star Andrew Carlson stole the show with a pair of incredible performances. After a several year hiatus, TerraCross racing made its return debut at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota with pro class main events both Friday and Saturday featuring utility quad and side-x-side competition on a hybrid motocross track littered with obstacles.

With a deal already inked to broadcast the four-race series on CBS Sports Network, the pro side-x-side field was bursting with top-level talent including Jeff Loyd, Doug Gust, Daryl Rath, and snowmobile backcountry extraordinaire Chris Burandt. Yet it was Andrew Carlson in his Muscle Milk Polaris RZR that stole the show with a blistering win on Friday evening where he crossed the line with a near 8-second margin; and his gas-for-glory last lap pass for second place on Saturday.

Combining elements of motocross with a variety of man-made obstacles including telephone poles, rock fields, mud pits, and massive timbers, TerraCross is the ultimate test of machine and driver. Faced with a 10-lap final, drivers must manage the desire the go for it while protecting their equipment as they pound through massive boulders and launch off huge tractor tires.

While Carlson’s win on Friday had everyone in the stands buzzing, it was his come from behind podium on Saturday afternoon that was perhaps even more impressive. Faced with a back row start in a field of 10 pro finalists, Carlson emerged from the turn one melee’ in 7th place. He then carefully managed the 10-lap race to work his way through the field to eventually find himself in the final podium position. While the battle to this point would have been a perseverance victory alone, Carlson wanted more and mounted one final bid for second place. With legendary off-road racer Daryl Rath in front of him and the finish line in sight; Carlson squared up his RZR and mashed the gas over the tires and final jump, rocketing himself past Rath and onto the second podium box.

“The track was brutal,” said Carlson after emerging from his Polaris. “I was picking good lines and playing it safe over the big obstacles for most of the race. But on the final lap I went for it and it paid off.”
Coming from the TerraCross Pro/Am ranks on Friday to lead the field of drivers in points by the close of the weekend will put Carlson in the cross hairs as the TerraCross Championships unfold September 8th and 9th during the Sno-Barons Haydays World Championships near North Branch, Minnesota. For more information on the TerraCross series visit their website at www.terracrossracing.com. Action from ERX will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network Sunday nights at 8:00pm central July 8th, 15th, and 22nd. For more information on the ERX Motor Park facility in Elk River, MN. OFF-ROADERS WIN AGAINST LAWSUIT TO CLOSE BAY AREA OHV PARK

OAKLAND, CA (June 22)--The BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC), a national trail-based recreation group, wants to congratulate the California OHV Program in a recent court victory to keep a popular state managed motorized park open in the S.F. Bay Area. The suit was dismissed "with prejudice" under a recent stipulation, meaning that it cannot be re-filed.

Late in 2009, two anti-OHV groups filed an action against California State Parks and the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division, alleging violations of state laws regarding water pollution at Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area. The California Sportfishing Protection Alliance and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility filed the suit in the Superior Court in Alameda County alleging violations of state laws regarding water pollution at the park.

The anti-access groups won an initial round in the Superior Court, but that decision was reversed on appeal. In the meantime, the agencies have worked diligently to address water quality to the apparent satisfaction of the anti-access groups. The stipulation resolving the case makes clear it is not to be construed for any purpose as an admission of liability.

Don Amador, Western Representative for the BlueRibbon Coalition, stated, "I want to thank the hard working staff at the Division and the thousands of users who fought back against this unwarranted lawsuit. This whole case could have been avoided if tshe anti-OHV groups had offered to work with the park in a cooperative manner instead of filing a lawsuit to close the park down."

"The park and Central Valley Water Board are to be commended for their patience and professionalism under difficult circumstances, and they set an example of how agencies can work together to address environmental issues without resorting to litigation," Amador concluded.

Nic Granlund podiums at round 5 and 6 of the WORCS series.

Coming off of his round 4 win at Speedworld, Nic was excited about repeating his performance for round 5 at Race Town 395. Eager to try out his new Lone Star suspension and upgraded FOX shocks, Nic bolted on a new set of STI tires and headed down to California for the race.

After getting his car dialed in to the track he was ready for the race. Managing a second place hole-shot Nic quickly made some moves and got into the lead before the end of the MX section. As Nic set a good pace out front maintaining a significant lead and keeping an eye on his nearest competitors, Nic cruised to what everyone thought was a solid win.

After the results were posted Nic noticed he had finished in second place due to a time correction of a competitor coming off the second row that started a minute behind. In the end Nic never knew there was anyone competing for the lead as he could have pushed the pace to secure the victory. Still, second place was very acceptable considering this was only Nic's fourth ever UTV race.

Round 6 at On The Edge Raceway in Utah was quickly approaching and Nic was doing some final testing when he noticed a crack in the rear differential. With the help of Got Tools Racing's Mike Geiger and Ted "Shred" Kovacevich putting in long hours, they were able to get Nic's car ready to go the night before heading to Utah.

The WORCS crew had laid out a challenging course with lots of trees, an amazing amount of rocks and two water crossings that made the course resemble a cross-country race more than a off-road race. After some adjustments to the Fox Shox, STI tires, checking the nuts and bolts on his Dragonfire exhaust and a liberal dose of Torco fluids, Nic was now ready to tackle the rough Utah WORCS course.

Considering it was Father's Day weekend, Nic was excited to have his son and parents there to cheer him on. Nic's pit crew, Mike and Ted had also brought their families to Utah, making it a complete family weekend. As the green flag dropped Nic came out of the first turn in third place. After turn two was a tough rhythm section. Nic was pushing for second place heading toward turn three through the rhythm section when another competitor hit Nic, forcing him over the berm and off the track. As Nic made his way back onto the course he was now battling for seventh place. Settling into a good pace Nic was trying to keep the mistakes down as the dust made it very difficult to see the trees and rocks that lined the edge of the challenging WORCS course. Nic made some strategic passes on his competitors and that combined with the rough course claiming some victims, Nic now found himself in second place.

By the time Nic had made his way around to the third lap, the leader had over a 30 second advantage. Nic was now barely able to see the dust of his first place competion and that was when Nic decided to push the pace and started to make up time. Each lap Nic was able to gain time on the leader and by the time the time white flag was displayed, Nic had closed the gap to 7 seconds. With one lap to go, Nic was pushing even harder and started to make up more time on the leader. Coming out of the second water crossing Nic was right on his tail and continued to push it as hard as he could knowing the finish line was getting close. With three turns to go the leader and Nic had caught a lapper, making things interesting. Nic kept trying and pulled alongside the leader several times in the last few turns making what was certainly the most exciting race of the weekend. When the checkered flag dropped Nic was less than half a car from taking the win resulting in a second place finish.

With two more rounds remaining, Nic is planning to stay on the podium and rounding out the season in the winners circle.

Nic would again like to thank his pit crew Mike and Ted for their dedication and hard work.

Without sponsors Nic would not have the opportunity to be competitive, so at big thanks goes out to.

Valcourt, Québec, June 12, 2012 – Can-Am® ATV and side-by-side riders won races in several different classes and series in both the U.S. and Canada. Leading the way at round five of the New England ATV Motocross Series (NEATV-MX), BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450™ pro Josh Creamer swept both the Pro and Pro-Am classes in New Hampshire. In Texas, Hunter Miller won the Open Expert and Pro-Am classes aboard his DS 450 ATV in the Texhoma Quad Racing Association (TQRA) series. Hunter and his brother Cody Miller also competed in the Texas Off-Road Nationals (TORN) series on Saturday and each notched class victories in their Commander 1000 X side-by-side vehicles. Can-Am X-Team racers also won separate racing events in Iowa and Canada.

“Josh Creamer, who won both the Pro and Pro-Am classes on his DS 450 in New Hampshire, dominated in the NEATV-MX series once again. He continues to impress during his pursuit of a double championship in 2012,” stated Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “The Miller brothers were unbelievable in Texas, competing and winning in two different series. Hunter, who also won the TQRA SxS title for Can-Am, had a exceptionally strong weekend in both the Commander 1000 X and on board the DS 450 ATV.”

MX101 in Epping, N.H., hosted round five of the NEATV-MX series. In Pro class action, Creamer took both holeshots and checked out on the competition in each moto on his way to a 1-1 sweep and overall victory, his fifth of the year. He mirrored that performance in the Pro-Am class, posting another 1-1 sweep to further his class points lead. Can-Am racer Michael Troiano finished second in the Pro-Am class.
“The BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450 was running awesome this weekend and everything went according to plan. It was a great weekend for us and I am really happy to put Can-Am on top of the podium again,” said Creamer.

Four amateur Can-Am DS 450 racers won five classes at MX101. Mike Kamalsky won both the 30+ A and 40+classes. Matt Pomeroy (25+), Chris Dipietro (Production A) and Ryan Dyer (Production B) each won their class.

In Texas, the weekend was long but rewarding for Hunter and Cody Miller, as both Can-Am X-Team racers earned victories in their home state. This past Saturday, Hunter and Cody traveled to Legacy Farm in Paradise, Texas, to race their Can-Am Commander 1000 X side by sides. Hunter led every lap as he won the UTV Unlimited class. Not to be outdone, Cody also posted a dominant win in the UTV Limited class. The brothers then drove to Oak Hill MX in Alvord, Texas, to race round seven of the TQRA series.

Hunter, who secured the 2012 TQRA SXS class Championship at round six, outgunned his brother in both the Pro and Pro-Am classes, earning two overall victories on his Louis Powersports-backed Can-Am DS 450. He posted 1-1 moto scores to win the Open Expert class, while Cody finished second. In the Pro-Am class, Cody won the first moto, but Hunter earned the second-moto victory to notch another overall for the weekend.

“It was a fun racing this weekend. Cody and I had a great battle going on in the final Open Expert moto, but I was able to get the win, so I’m pretty happy about that,” said Hunter Miller. “I’m really happy to give Can-Am a SxS Championship as well this year, and I’m going to do everything I can to give them another one.”

At the Courses VTT Quadcross series in Ste-Sophie de Levrard, QC, Can-Am X-Team racer Richard Pelchat won the Pro 450 class on his DS 450. Elie Desroches also rode a Can-Am DS 450 to victory in the Intermediate class.

At Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Can-Am X-Team / CR21 Racing rider Zach Harris pulled all the holeshots in both his classes to take the overall wins in the Quad A and Quad A Production classes.

Team ROCKSTAR/BLINGSTAR/POLARIS Takes Overall at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Complex

Clint Roberts with Blingstar Products Inc. is the team owner/manager and put this team together to get more involved with the UTV racing scene. It all started after pitching the idea to Polaris Industries, that he wanted to take factory Polaris RZR 900 XP’s right from the dealership floor, make a few mods to the cage, bolt on a few Blingstar products and race these things competitively and show to the public just how awesome these machines were. "I knew that other teams had taken stock Polaris RZR 900 XP’s and raced BITD, WORCS and other series, but never has anyone attempted to race short course stadium type racing with them". He then called the promoter of Lucas Oil and explained to them that their program for UTV’s could be much larger if they created a new class that allowed UTV’s other than the UTV SR1 class. Lucas Oil was excited about the idea and after further research they created this new class. Now Lucas Oil Regional Series offers this UTV unlimited class and its a blast.

During the process of putting this race team together, BLINGSTAR and ROCKSTAR Energy Drink agreed on doing a licensing deal for UTV products and graphics. "They basically wanted to get involved into the UTV market knowing that its growing rapidly and Blingstar was excited to help make it happen. Since working with ROCKSTAR, we have created the Rockstar/Blingstar/Polaris UTV team and have also designed a Rockstar/Blingstar UTV graphic kit that is now available for sale to the public. It is the exact same design you will see on all of our race team UTV’s, minus the sponsor logos. We will be releasing other Rockstar products built by Blingstar in the near future."

This last weekend, the team competed in our first race at the Lucas Oil Regional Series June 9th. in Lake Elsinore, Ca. The Rockstar/Blingstar/Polaris team ended up finishing 1st, 2nd and had 4 cars finish in the top 5. We will be competing in all the Lucas Oil Regional races, the final rounds of the WORCS races and Doing some BITD and Baja races.

Motor Master CV Rebuild Kits Allow Rebuilding of ATV and UTV OEM CV Joints

Motor Master CV Rebuild Kits
Rockford, IL - In the past, repairing a worn or damaged OEM CV joint for an ATV or UTV often required replacement of the complete CV axle, as many manufacturers don’t offer components to rebuild the OEM CV joint itself. Replacement options were limited to an expensive OEM CV joint or CV axle, or a less expensive and lower quality aftermarket CV axle. For some vehicle models the only option was a new OEM CV axle, as no aftermarket equivalents exist. Now there is a new and better alternative; Motor Master ATV Products CV Rebuild Kits. The kits contain a new inner race, cage, bearings, CV boot, snap rings, grease and detailed instructions to properly rebuild ATV and UTV OEM CV joints to original specification. Thereby allowing the original CV axle to be retained, and at a fraction of the cost of a new OEM unit. Top quality components are used in CV Rebuild Kits including precision engineered inner races and cages, premium polyurea based grease, and Motor Master Duraboot high-strength CV boots that provide greater strength and durability than OEM CV boots. Motor Master provides inboard and outboard CV joint rebuild kits for a wide range of ATV’s, UTV’s and Minitrucks. Made in the USA. STI HEADING TO EASTERN SIERRA JAMBOREE

Do you have the tickets? The staff at STI Tire & Wheel managed to score, and we’re loading up for the Eastern Sierra ATV & UTV Jamboree. It goes off from June 12-16 in Coleville, California, and we can’t wait.

Why the excitement? Believe it or not, this is the only riding event of this type in the Golden State. It’s also limited to just 200 entrants, which is a shame, because this is one of the most scenic, off-roadable destinations in the nation. The Eastern Sierra ATV & UTV Jamboree takes place in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and on BLM lands in the woods, mountains and high deserts of northern Mono County. The event has only been around for a few years, but the word of mouth is spreading fast: you have to go. You may have seen a feature story on last year’s Jamboree in the December 2011 issue of ATV Rider Magazine.

A $150 registration fee includes a full breakfast each morning, the chance to win prizes at Tuesday night's BBQ & Ice Cream Social, four days of guided trail rides, dinner on Saturday evening, a t-shirt, a goodie bag and an entry into Saturday's big raffle drawing — which includes two sets of STI Black Diamond tires!

About a half-dozen different, well organized, skill-rated trail rides are offered during the event, depending on conditions and availability. The views of the landscape and wildlife are said to be spectacular.

If you are lucky enough to be included in this year’s Eastern Sierra ATV & UTV Jamboree, be sure to look for the guys wearing STI shirts and caps. And most likely big grins. We will have display set up on Friday and Saturday, so be sure to stop by and say “howdy.”

We’ll have a post-ride report soon. For more information, visit www.easternsierraatvjamboree.com.
STI tires and wheels are available at finer ATV/UTV dealers everywhere. For more information, visit www.stitireandwheel.com

Carlson Motorsports Duo Grab Podium in First Ever UTV Race

Elk River, Minnesota (May 25, 2012) - The competitive spirit of Andrew Carlson, the fast rising Pro-Lite national snocross athlete is always just a green flag away, as evident by a second place podium finish in his first-ever sanctioned UTV terrain race. The Can-Am IATVHSS race held at the Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa over the Memorial holiday weekend of May 26-27, featured a hare scramble type course with a broad range of natural terrain including woods, rocks, mud, and elevation change.

Competing in the UTV Modified class, Andrew along with Carlson Motorsports team mechanic Levi Ensrud, ran consistently fast in his well prepped Polaris RZR. With eight competitors lining up for the final, Carlson was one of only three racers to finish the race on the lead lap, and was only 17-second behind the winner.

“Heading to Iowa and trying my hand a new kind of racing was a lot of fun,” said Carlson. “Having co-driver (Levi) in the vehicle with you is a big plus, the communication and instant feedback you get during and after the race really helps improve your driving skills. Now that I know what to expect, I’m excited to return and I think I’ll have more speed as I get more and more seat time.”

The next race on the IATVHSS schedule is the Coyote Crossing event at Beaconsfield, Iowa on July 7th. For more information on the Can-Am IATVHSS series visit their website at www.iatvhss.com.
