Coming off an extremely impressive RZR XP 4 launch just months ago, Model Year 2013 enhances the line-up again with a new RZR 570 Trail Limited Edition with Electronic Power Steering (EPS), and for the first time on a RZR, Engine Braking System (EBS) and Versatrack Turf Mode; a gnarly Walker Evans Limited Edition RZR XP 900; dual-rate springs on the RZR 800 and more upgrades to the RZR family to make the line even more razor sharp.
Trail enthusiasts will love the new RZR 570 Trail Limited Edition that features Polaris’ exclusive Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and Engine Braking System (EBS), which is standard on all RZR 570 and RZR 800cc two-seat, electronic power steering units. Polaris’ EPS is the smoothest, most responsive electronic power steering available, and paired with the all-new EBS system that controls downhill braking giving you optimum control and smooth, even deceleration during descents, the RZR 570 Trail Limited Edition can tackle whatever the trail throws it’s way. Along with EPS and EBS, the unit also will be the first RZR vehicle to offer Versa Trac Turf Mode. The combination of EPS, EBS and Versa Trac makes the RZR 570 Trail Limited Edition the ultimate trail machine.

RZR 800
The RZR 800 was the vehicle that started it all and for 2013, the unit will feature dual-rate suspension springs for increased ground clearance across all payloads giving the original trail-capable side-by-side even more capability on the trail. For the past five years, Polaris has aggressively launched new products, evolved its off-road offerings and became No. 1 in the off-road industry with one of the best and most-innovative ATV and Side-by-Side offerings available. For model year 2013, Polaris will continue to innovate by introducing three new vehicles and making significant upgrades to existing products.

“Polaris’ innovation continues, once again, by creating products that raise the performance and value bar in the off-road industry,” said David Longren, Polaris Off-Road Division’s Vice President and General Manager. “From the hardest working, smoothest riding ATV and RANGER side-by-sides, to the RZR line with the ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility, Polaris offers the most-complete line-up of off-road vehicles on the market.”

The unit has many of the hardest working, smoothest riding features of its full-sized counterparts: On-Demand True All-Wheel Drive with VersaTrac, Independent Rear Suspension, heavy duty front end protection, high ground clearance and the longest suspension travel in its class. The RANGER 500 EFI, RANGER 400 and RANGER EV round out the midsize offering.

Innovations such as a new ProStar 900 engine, all-new chassis, new restyled cockpit, more suspension, new flip-up seat storage, new Lock & Ride™ PRO-FIT cab accessories, larger gas tank, easier serviceability and a quieter ride due to engine repositioning define a whole new class of utility side-by-side. The RANGER XP 900 will join the RANGER 800 EFI and RANGER Diesel in the full size category.
Hard working vehicles need power and the RANGER XP 900 delivers a new class of power with its all-new ProStar 900 engine which churns 60 horsepower, a 20 percent increase, for class-leading torque giving the RANGER XP 900 the ability to tow a class-leading one ton and haul 1000 lb/453.6 kg. The engine delivers smooth power throughout the RPM range thanks to its dual overhead cam design, 180 degree crank firing order and counterbalancing. The throttle control is smooth at all speeds and gear selections, including reverse. The RANGERXP 900 also is quieter with the engine now located under the rear cargo box.
To complement the ProStar engine, the RANGER XP 900 features a new, durable drivetrain built to handle the unit’s higher horsepower. It also boasts the strongest belt on a RANGER vehicle so it can tackle the toughest of jobs, and has powerful cooling for the belt and clutches for optimal performance under all work conditions.

Storage is important for work applications and the new RANGER XP 900 offers the most storage in its class. For easier accessibility, the new under-seat storage features flip-up access giving the operator increased and easier-accessible storage inside the cab, and the vehicle features lots of in-dash storage you’ve grown to expect from RANGER.
Outside the cab, the RANGER XP 900 offers a new harder working cargo box featuring more tie-down points, easily-inserted box dividers and a smoother gate release. The cab frame on the new RANGER XP 900 features profile tubing, providing a 360-degree sealing surface for every cab component. Windshields, roofs, doors and rear panels follow the shape of the vehicle, locking directly into the cab frame’s precision contours. Many PRO-FIT cab components feature Polaris-exclusive Lock & Ride™ technology for quick and easy on and off, and are 60 percent quieter at idle, and 40 percent quieter at 20 mph/32.2 kph.

For work applications, PURE Polaris is offering a new Speedkey System that is remarkably smooth at the top speed limiter. The Yellow key limits the vehicles’ speed to 25 mph/40.2 km and is perfect for controlling speed during work-related projects or when lower speeds are needed. Along with these exciting products, Pure Polaris will have a full line up of accessories for the RANGER XP 900 making it one of the hardest working vehicles on the market.
To complement the hardest working features of the RANGER XP 900, the restyled cockpit and chassis are the new class of smoothest riding. The completely redesigned cockpit fits three people more comfortably and offers class-leading ergonomics. The lower seat, with adjustable driver’s seat on Limited Edition models, and tilt steering gives occupants more options in comfort, and the new seat belts are easier to use. New center-mounted gauges give the operator one place to look for ride data and the easy access to storage under the seat means tasks are done quicker and more efficiently.
For an incredibly smooth ride and optimal handling, the RANGER XP 900 has an all-new chassis that is more rigid, with increased torsional stiffness. This delivers a smoother ride, low vibration, and the ability to tackle anything that stands in its way. The RANGERXP 900 has easy steering with or without Electronic Power Steering (EPS), and features 5 in/12.7 cm more wheelbase, 1 in/2.5 cm more travel and 12 in/30.5 cm of ground clearance. The wet sump engine, which offers 100 hours between service intervals, is easily accessed from under the rear cargo box, and has an easily accessible oil check and fill. The unit also features metric fasteners for most parts and grease zerks to flush joints. For driver’s ease, there is fuel access on the driver’s side and a 11 percent bigger gas tank that holds 10 gal/37.85 liters making gassing up more convenient and less frequent.

YOSHIMURA R&D OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES PERFORMANCE EXHAUST AND HARD PART APPLICATIONS FOR ARCTIC CAT WILDCAT

Arctic Cat Wildcat - RS-4 Exhaust
CHINO, CA (July 27, 2012) – Yoshimura R&D of America is proud to announce the availability of performance exhaust and hard parts for the popular Arctic Cat Wildcat Side-by-Side. In recent years, UTVs and Side-by-Sides have emerged as some of the most popular off-road vehicles. We were excited for the opportunity to put our knowledge, skill, and craftsmanship forth and develop performance products for these machines. In order to produce the most functional and durable products available, we had to find someone who could test and abuse them on a regular basis. No one fit the bill better than William Yokley of Yokley Racing. William is no stranger to riding or the podium. He began riding as a child, racing by age 15, and has since captured several ATV and UTV Championships, including the Baja 1000.
Yoshimura has been working intently with Yokley Racing to develop parts specific to racing, while also benefiting the weekend warrior. Because we take racing very seriously, we utilized the best technological equipment available. Through the use of high-tech data acquisition and GPS tracking technology, similar to those used in Formula One racing, we've developed the best performing products in the industry. With additional input from Yokley and his team, we've tuned intakes, exhausts, engines, engine management, and fuel – everything conceivable for the best performance possible. Yoshimura is proud to play a role in the development of UTV performance and racing.
The RS-4 full system and a number of hard part accessories are now available for the Arctic Cat Wildcat. The RS-4 is CNC mandrel bent using 304 stainless steel tubing for a long lasting, durable and rust-resistant life. Headers feature an over-sized step tube design for maximum power through out the entire RPM range. The two-into-two header design converges at the muffler inlet, providing ample exhaust flow. The RS-4 muffler features a 304 stainless steel CNC rolled and robot welded canister shell and staying true to the RS-4 off-road systems, this system uses a carbon fiber end-cap. The system not only looks better, but out performs the stock exhaust system and weights less too. The full system includes the RS-4 stainless steel muffler with a carbon fiber end-cap, stainless steel headers and tailpipe, installation hardware, and step-by-step instructions. Aluminum roof kits, roost guards and aluminum wind deflector kits are also available – all built to the highest standards by Yoshimura R&D in America.

Are Sport UTVs destined to go the way of the Honda ATC?

Honda ATC Three-Wheeler

Originally published on Sunday, May 31, 2009
By Jon Crowley, www.utvguide.net

I was just interviewed by a free lance reporter who is writing an article on the Yamaha Rhino and I got to thinking about sport UTVs. Are Yamaha Rhinos, as well as other sport UTVs headed in the direction of the infamous Honda ATC three-wheeler from back in the 1980’s?
If you remember way back when in 1982 (it really isn’t that long ago), Honda introduced the ATC 200 Big Red. The ATC was a great machine, but as popularity exploded, so did the accident rate.
The increase in accident levels lead to an investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In 1986, CPSC statistics suggested that most accidents were due to improper rider behavior that ignored manufacturer warnings. No inherent flaw was found in the three-wheel design.
Honda’s owner’s manual and product warning labels stressed the importance of preper operation to its customers. Through a national industry safety campaign, there was a 33 percent decline in recorded CPSC injury statistics between 1984 and 1988.
Nevertheless, in 1988, ATV manufacturers entered into a 10 year agreement with the CPSC. Under the agreement ATV manufacturers made a $100 million commitment to expand safety programs. Additionally, even though three-wheel ATC sales were dropping off, manufacturers agreed to stop distributing ATCs in the U.S.
If history is bound to repeat itself, the sport UTV is headed in a similar direction as the ATC three-wheeler. The Yamaha Rhino is currently the biggest target, and Yamaha has worked out an agreement with the CPSC to “repair” existing Rhinos. Yamaha is facing an onslaught of lawsuits from users that for the most part have tipped their vehicles over and have been injured or killed.
From what I have seen in reviewing many of the accidents that I see reported in the newspapers, a lot can be blamed on users not following manufacturer guidelines for proper use. For example, here are the two most recent accidents that happened in May 2009:
The accidents are tragic, that is for sure. But if you look past the inflammatory reporting you will find that in both instances, many guidelines were completely ignored that would have either prevented the accident or surely lessened the severity.
In the case of the 13 year old boy, he was not wearing a seat belt, he is under 16 years old, the Rhino was new (lack of experience), he was not wearing a helmet and there was no adult supervision.
With the father that died in the roll over, the Rhino was carrying one driver and 5 children as passengers in a two person vehicle. No one had seat belts on, and the father was carrying his one year old son on his lap.

If I am reading the tea-leaves correctly, I can see that improper use of sport UTVs will soon affect all of us. Will the CPSC step in and limit how powerful side x side vehicles can be? Will helmets become mandatory equipment just like they are in California for ATVs? Will manufacturers be forced to add even more safety equipment? Do you get the point?
All of these lawsuits and the bureaucrats at the CPSC are going to force manufacturers to limit how much fun we can have in our beloved UTVs. That is the sad truth.

Here are a few guidelines to remember to help keep you safe in a side x side vehicle:
  • Always wear your seat belt
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Keep arms and legs in the vehicle at all times
  • Abrupt maneuvers or aggressive driving can cause rollovers – even on flat, open areas
  • Learn the limits of your vehicle and your driving ability
  • Children under 16 should never drive a side x side vehicle
Beyond following the guideline provided by vehicle manufacturers, use some common sense and take responsibility for your actions. Just because you have an accident doesn’t mean there is a problem with the vehicle and you should be owed a lot of money.

New California Legislation Impacts UTVs - AB 1595

AB 1595, Cook. Vehicles: recreational off-highway vehicles.

What does the new law accomplish?

Dune Fest organizer promises packed event

WINCHESTER BAY — In just a few days, the dunes will be transformed into a mini city in the sand.
Dune Fest begins on Aug. 1 and event organizers are getting excited about the annual riding week. Like all events presented by the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce this year, the huge task of organizing Dune Fest had organizers worried. But as usual, the members, employees and all the volunteers associated with the chamber came together for what chairman Jeff Vander Kley said will be a memorable week in the sand.
“I think this year could be our best Dune Fest to date,” Vander Kley said. “Vendor row is packed, we have about 300 dedicated volunteers and we have a lot of sponsors we’ve never had before.”
Besides volunteers, the chamber got some much needed assistance from Jesse Meyer of Meyer Media.
“We asked him if he’d be willing to take on a bigger role this year and he has. He’s done just a terrific job with it,” Vander Kley said. “He’s secured vendors and sponsors and just really stepped up to the plate.”
In addition to vendors and sponsors, new events will be featured this year.
Starting off, the event will be an adult-social where sponsors, participants, volunteers and anyone else can have a little down time before the fun begins.
There also is a night ride scheduled, where ATV and motorcycle riders can ride in groups at night.
“The night ride is really going to be a lot of fun,” Vander Kley said. “They’ll be riding out into the dunes with all kinds of spot lights.
The night ride is sponsored by DuneStar racing. There also will be an expanded riding area and three days of safety lessons for children. A treasure hunt, sponsored by Mod Quad and a poker run, presented by Univera also will be part of the event lineup.

Polaris posts 24 percent gain in second quarter

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today reported record second quarter net income of $69.8 million, or $0.98 per diluted share, for the quarter ended June 30, 2012, up 43 percent from the prior year’s second quarter net income of $48.7 million, or $0.68 per diluted share. Sales for the second quarter 2012 totaled a record $755.4 million, an increase of 24 percent over last year’s second quarter sales of $607.9 million.
Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chief Executive Officer, commented, “While the weak U.S. economy and likely recession in Europe are concerning, we continue to see strength in our core North American Powersports business. Our investments in adjacent markets and international expansion are paying dividends, and we are excited to have Eicher Motors Limited as a joint venture partner to aggressively pursue growth in India. The strong second quarter results were driven by solid strategic execution combined with end-market demand that is healthier than a year ago.”
Polaris’ North American retail sales to consumers climbed 17 percent during the quarter propelled by strong demand for our innovative products and supported by continued growth in the industry off-road vehicle and motorcycle markets. As a result, our Off-Road Vehicles business increased wholesale sales to dealers 20 percent during the quarter. Our On-Road Vehicles business also experienced strong demand, up 110 percent, which reflects ongoing consumer enthusiasm for our expanding line of motorcycles worldwide and the importance of our diversification efforts.
“We are extremely pleased with our success during the second quarter, but we remain mindful of the uncertainty surrounding the overall economic environment in Europe and North America. As we continue investing in our future growth, such as the recently announced joint venture with Eicher, we are prepared to react quickly to sales velocity changes in our businesses,” continued Wine. “Given the ongoing strength in our overall business as well as the anticipated success of several new model year 2013 vehicles to be unveiled next week at our dealer meeting, we are raising our expectations for sales and earnings for the full year 2012. We believe this continues to be a great time to be a Polaris shareholder.”
2012 Business Outlook
Based on Polaris’ performance in the first half of 2012 and projections for the remainder of the year, the Company is increasing its 2012 full year sales and earnings guidance. The Company now expects full year 2012 earnings to be in the range of $4.05 to $4.15 per diluted share, an increase of between 27 and 30 percent over full year 2011 earnings of $3.20 per diluted share. Full year 2012 sales are now expected to grow in the range of 14 percent to 17 percent from 2011.
Off-Road Vehicle (“ORV”) sales increased 20 percent from the second quarter 2011 to $581.1 million. This increase reflects continued North American market share gains for both ATVs and side-by-side vehicles. Polaris North American ORV unit retail sales were up more than 15 percent from the second quarter last year, with consumer purchases of side-by-side vehicles climbing over 20 percent and ATV retail sales up nearly ten percent. The Company estimates the North American industry ORV retail sales increased low double digits percent from the second quarter of 2011. North American ORV dealer inventories were up low double digits percent from the second quarter of 2011, in support of continued strong retail demand for side-by-side vehicles. Sales of ORVs outside of North America decreased eight percent compared to the second quarter 2011, due to weaker international economic conditions and an unfavorable currency impact resulting from the strong U.S. dollar.
Snowmobile sales totaled $8.9 million for the 2012 second quarter compared to $6.8 million for the second quarter of 2011. The increase is partially due to a mix of higher priced products being shipped during the 2012 second quarter compared to the same period last year. Second quarter snowmobile sales are routinely low for the Company as deliveries to dealers ramp up in the second half of the calendar year before the snowmobile retail selling season begins in earnest.
Sales of the On-Road Vehicles division, comprised primarily of Victory motorcycles but also including Indian motorcycles and our GEM and Goupil electric vehicles, increased 110 percent over the same period last year to $64.7 million. North American industry heavyweight cruiser and touring motorcycle retail sales increased low single digits percent during the 2012 second quarter as compared to the prior year’s second quarter. Over the same period, Victory North American consumer unit retail sales increased over ten percent, once again gaining market share. North American Victory dealer inventory increased over 2011 levels to support the retail sales increases, market share gains and new product launches of the Victory Judge™ and Victory Hard-Ball™. Polaris sales of On-Road Vehicles to customers outside of North America, now including Goupil, increased over 130 percent during the 2012 second quarter compared to same period last year. The 2011 acquisitions of Indian, GEM and Goupil contributed over a third of On-Road Vehicles’ second quarter sales growth.
Parts, Garments, and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased 15 percent during the second quarter 2012 compared to the same period last year. The increase was primarily driven by higher ORV and Victory motorcycle-related PG&A sales.
International sales totaled $111.5 million for the 2012 second quarter, a seven percent increase over the same period in 2011. Unfavorable currency fluctuations negatively impacted sales outside North America by five percent during the 2012 second quarter. The increase in the second quarter sales was driven by the additional sales from the Goupil acquisition as well as higher sales of Victory motorcycles and a 38 percent increase in Asia/Pacific region sales, offset by lower ORV sales, primarily in Europe, due to sluggish economic conditions and the weak currencies.
Gross profit was 28.7 percent of sales for the second quarter of 2012, a decrease of 50 basis points from 2011’s all-time second quarter high gross profit percentage. The gross profit percentage declined primarily due to unfavorable currency fluctuations, which had well over 100 basis points negative impact on the gross profit percentagein the second quarter 2012 compared to the second quarter 2011, as well as negative product mix and commodity costs impacts. Gross profit dollars increased 22 percent to $216.7 million for the second quarter of 2012, compared to $177.6 million for the second quarter of 2011. The increase in gross profit dollars resulted primarily from increased volume, cost savings from the manufacturing realignment project, continued product cost reduction efforts and higher selling prices.
Operating expenses for the second quarter 2012 increased eight percent to $114.5 million or 15.2 percent of sales as compared to $106.2 million or 17.5 percent of sales for the second quarter of 2011. Operating expenses in absolute dollars for the second quarter of 2012 increased primarily due to research and development expenses and continued infrastructure investments being made in international and adjacent markets, offset somewhat by lower incentive compensation plan expenses due to stock price changes during the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.
Income from financial services increased 49 percent to $8.2 million during second quarter 2012 compared to $5.5 million in the second quarter of 2011, primarily a consequence of increased profitability generated from retail credit portfolios with GE, Capital One and Sheffield and higher income from the dealer inventory financing through Polaris Acceptance.
Non-operating other expense was $0.2 million in the second quarter of 2012, compared to $1.6 million in the second quarter of 2011. The decrease in expense is the result of foreign currency exchange rate movements and the resulting effects on foreign currency transactions related to the Company’s foreign subsidiaries.
The provision for income taxes for the second quarter 2012 was recorded at a rate of 35.8 percent of pretax income compared to 34.4 percent of pretax income for the second quarter 2011. The higher income tax rate for the second quarter 2012 is primarily due to the United States Congress not yet extending the research and development income tax credit as of June 30, 2012.
Financial Position and Cash Flow
Net cash provided by operating activities increased 27 percent to $78.4 million for the year-to-date period ended June 30, 2012 compared to $61.8 million for the first half of 2011. The increase in net cash provided by operating activities for the 2012 period was due to increased net income, partially offset by a higher investment in working capital, largely due to higher factory inventory compared to the same period in 2011. Total debt at the end of the second quarter was $107.6 million. The Company’s debt-to-total capital ratio was 16 percent at June 30, 2012, compared to 18 percent at the same period in 2011. Cash and cash equivalents were $289.3 million at June 30, 2012 compared to $262.2 million for the same period in 2011.

OHV COMMUNITY SUPPORTS CA GOVERNOR'S EFFORT TO REVIEW PARK FUND

SACRAMENTO, CA (July 20, 2012) -- The BlueRibbon Coalition, a national trail-based recreation group, and the California Off-Highway Vehicle Community welcomes the quick response from Governor Jerry Brown to investigate financial irregularities and a hidden slush fund within State Parks.
The OHV community is disappointed, but not the least bit surprised that the problem exists.
OHV enthusiasts have made repeated efforts over the past couple of years to draw attention to the theft of OHV funds under the guise that dire conditions are forcing the closure of recreational opportunities in order to save what management has described as distressed quiet parks.
Motorized recreationists are asking that the OHV program, a national model and one with absolute fiscal clarity, be restored completely.
The OHV program is the most successful division in State Parks and responsibly provides recreational opportunities to millions of Californians. OHV recreation is also critical to the rural economy of our state.
The OHV community is not amused by the protestations of former Director Ruth Coleman that she had no idea the problem existed. Certainly, her career as a budget expert is a matter of record. The buck stops someplace...we hope that is where the investigation will begin.
BRC looks forward to participating in the process.

Marysvale, Utah - July 15, 2012 - The 4th Annual UTV Jamboree will be held August 8-11, 2012, the event is free to the public! The event provides for 3 full days of entertainment, guided rides, meal opportunities, obstacle course challenges, and most of all a great time. “It’s also the best time of year, when it’s too hot to ride other places, it’s nice and cool up here and it gives people one last event to bring the kids out to before school starts,” said Darin Bushman, Executive Board Member of the Paiute Trail Committee. With literally thousands of miles of OHV trails to ride Piute County, which sits dead center of the Paiute ATV Trail, is the natural location for riders from all over the US and abroad to assemble for the Fourth Annual UTV Jamboree. "Marysvale is the greatest venue on the planet for an event like this, given the variety of scenery, great elevations, and cool fresh mountain air,” said Milo Medley, Piute County Chamber President, "Marysvale prides itself as the most OHV friendly city in America, people come here from all over the world and are simply amazed at the amount of trails and diversity of riding."

Piute County is nestled at the base of the majestic Tushar Mountains in a high mountain valley. Every City in the county allows OHV access on city streets year round. Riders can experience high mountain desert climates in the morning and within hours climb to the highest point on the trail system at over 11,000 Feet and have lunch amidst beautiful Aspen lined meadows and streams. The Jamboree provides something for everyone, guided trail rides, live music, competitive events, drag races, and a mud pit belly flop contest to name a few.

"Piute County is simply 'THE DESTINATION' for ATV and UTV Enthusiasts," declares County Commissioner Rick Blackwell. Marysvale is currently home to four RV parks, two motels, two Bed and Breakfasts and four restaurants and a well stocked convenience store. "We are not a big county, we have just what you need to make your visit comfortable without all the traffic and noise," declared County Commissioner Rick Blackwell.

Fishing is plentiful at Piute Reservoir State Park and Otter Creek State Park as well as the Sevier River which winds its way the length and breadth of the county.
